When is it too early for a Christmas tree? 18:51 - Oct 13 with 1615 viewsfootball

I may be bah humbug and put mine up a couple of weeks before the big man visits but I have just driven back home through Wetherdon and glanced at the houses only to see there was a big tree up in someones front lounge. I mean it's October, the clocks haven't gone back and we haven't had kids bang on our door for sweets and chocolate. This is too early right????

Before Halloween seems out of order to me. Anytime from November 1st is open season though.

December 1st has always been the tradition on our house. Christmas to me is the whole of December. I love the pubs, bars, shops and restaurants during December.

I used to be judgemental when I saw decorations up in October and November (retail aside) but as Mrs GB pointed out, you never know if somebody is terminally ill and won't make Christmas that year or they have a family member in the forces who will be away during the festive period.

Hey now, hey now, don't dream it's over

Didn't think of those scenarios which are valid reasons. I hope that isn't the case and they are just way way too enthusiastic. If the latter is the case, surely the magic and excitement wears off. that said my cats woudl be happy as they love nothing more than getting decorations off the tree and hiding them in places

They've started early in Edinburgh.

That's a bar/ restaurant called The Dome. Lovely if expensive place that used to be a bank.

Even for hospitality that is early. Let's get Halloween out the way first.

December 23rd seems fair to me

If, like me, you have a job that takes you through residential areas, you really get to see when the big, massive Christmas monster has puked his bile all over the land

Merry Christmas

It’s supposed to be from the start of advent, or around 1st December.

Always feel it’s in poor taste that shops etc go for it before Remembrance Day.

I don't like Christmas encroaching on Halloween. More than that, I don't like people saying take down decorations before the 12 days of Christmas are over. The combo of putting decorations up early and taking them down early is odd to me.

We put our tree up the Sunday after the last pre-christmas hockey fixtures. I think that'll be the 14th of December this year, possibly the 21st depending on cup progress.

We've got a two year old who seems intent on destroying everything now so I'm worried about putting it up this year. 😂

Yeah right, and you're really short-sighted, and there was a dirty mark on the window which needed rubbing off, and you had your other hand in your pocket because it was cold, and the collar is too big for the dog and it often slips off without you noticing...

We put our tree up around the 1st December but if people want to put theirs up earlier than that then that’s down to them.

I find it more strange when people take down their tree and decorations on 27th Dec.

As a kid, raised in a small village in north Suffolk in the mid-1950s, no-one in the village decorated up until Christmas Eve. In our house Mum and Dad did it after we’d gone to bed. Us kids would come down in the morning to a fully decorated house/tree with presents scatttered around. Very special

Better to stay silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt

Pre-Halloween seems a bit early to me, I'd rather we swung into Christmas around the first Sunday of Advent whenever that falls but each to their own.

We've always put ours up on 17th December. It's the day after my Mum's birthday and it's stuck as a tradition even though we lost her to Parkinsons 12 years ago.

But why do people take everything down on ruddy Boxing Day? Christmas isn't over by a long chalk at that point. Again by family tradition, bits start coming down on Jan 2nd and the last thing to go, the tree, is done on Twelfth Night.

I always think that out of respect from after Remembrance Day / Sunday.
The TV ads seem to kick in from then.
I note the DAB radio Xmas channels are now live. I have favourited them ready for mid November.

1st Dec for me.

For others though, live and let live. If people feel better putting them up or want to put some lights up outside then good for them.

Truly impaired.
