Venezuela under attack (n/t) on 19:51 - Jan 3 by GlasgowBlue
I hope that the Iranian people will be next to get rid of their dictatorial regime. And again, without interference from the west. So many brave people taking to the streets and it's getting little coverage over here.
....just so long as the 'democratic West' cash in on it!
"They break our legs and tell us to be grateful when they offer us crutches."

Always assuming there is another free and fair election in the USA in the near future.
What happens if the Democratic Party is banned by executive order as a threat to national security? Congress and the Supreme Court are under Trumpist control. Unless the military tries to seize power (very unlikely), they're stuffed.
An executive order to ban the Democratic Party? Jeez!
And so a final thought from Marjorie Taylor Greene to MAGA on 22:25 - Jan 3 by unstableblue
Her recent social media below post kinda nails it. Which says something as it’s Marjorie Taylor Greene! Personally I’m left wondering how are they going to justify this when it so clearly not anything to do with drugs? Maduro was bad and bad for Venezuelans. But this is so obviously a natural resources play.. and they’re literally admitting it in the press conference. And the guy Macron suggests bringing in, is apparently not on Trumps list! You know the guy who was democratically elected.
Marjorie on X:
“I’ve served on the Homeland Security Committee for the past three years. I’m 100% for strong safe secure borders and stopping narco terrorists and cartels from trafficking deadly drugs and human trafficking into America.
Fentanyl is responsible for over 70% of U.S. drug overdose deaths and fentanyl comes from Mexican cartels made with chemical precursors from China and trafficked across the U.S. Mexico border.
Mexican cartels are primarily and overwhelmingly responsible for killing Americans with deadly drugs.
If U.S. military action and regime change in Venezuela was really about saving American lives from deadly drugs then why hasn’t the Trump admin taken action against Mexican cartels?
And if prosecuting narco terrorists is a high priority then why did President Trump pardon the former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez who was convicted and sentenced for 45 years for trafficking hundreds of tons of cocaine into America? Ironically cocaine is the same drug that Venezuela primarily traffics into the U.S.
The next obvious observation is that by removing Maduro this is a clear move for control over Venezuelan oil supplies that will ensure stability for the next obvious regime change war in Iran.
And of course why is it ok for America to militarily invade, bomb, and arrest a foreign leader but Russia is evil for invading Ukraine and China is bad for aggression against Taiwan? Is it only ok if we do it? (I’m not endorsing Russia or China)
Regime change, funding foreign wars, and American’s tax dollars being consistently funneled to foreign causes, foreigners both home and abroad, and foreign governments while Americans are consistently facing increasing cost of living, housing, healthcare, and learn about scams and fraud of their tax dollars is what has most Americans enraged.”
Of all the shocking things that have happened so far under Trump 2.0, this is surely the most shocking: MTG has a brain (and a spine attached to it). A very sensible statement. Incredible. Where the hell was this person the last few years? Just makes me even more cynical about her to be honest because it shows she isn't as thick as she made out.

I think she is / was a true believer in America First.
So when he instantly turned on her over the Epstein files she was surprised and similar goes to things like this where it doesn't make any sense given the context she describes.
In short we invade counties for their natural resources!
Venezuela has huge reserves.
Remember climate change - seems a distant memory. BP just binned it’s renewables transition to go for a drill baby drill strategy - yeah baby!
One positive Putin will be flipping out on the potential oil price drop.
Americans are paying for this military mass build up, and they get cheaper gas prices, but it’ll be the Trump donors that get the real benefits.
And it certainly won’t be the man on the street in Caracas
Nice and sleazy.
BP binned renewables some time ago. It wasn't as much as a moral decision as elements of the media portray.
Auchincloss and Looney didn't put forward a credible long term pivot or explain how the margins would assimilate from high to low and reduce BPs staggering debt.
Not condoning it, just the context was not one of clear direction. The activist investor in NYC said the plan was nonsense too. Essentially no one saw the plan as viable or credible.
The action certainly doesn't seem to be about democracy.
Trump says administration has not talked to Venezuela's exiled opposition leader María Corina Machado
Donald Trump just said he and his administration have not talked to Venezuela’s exiled opposition leader María Corina Machado today. He took on a dismissive tone at the question from the reporters gathered at Mar-a-Lago for this ongoing press conference.
“I think it would be very difficult for her” to return to lead Venezuela, the US president just said, in response to a reporter’s question.
“She does not have the support in Venezuela; she is a very nice woman but she does not have the support,” he said.

Trump will not want her because she is “a radical left lunatic” The obvious solution is to organise a properly supervised fair general election as quickly as possible and let the Venezuelans decide who governs them. Unfortunately that is not going to happen.

No opportunity to embed Amercian businesses and profit from the oil if they do that.
I’m in Madeira and at least a dozen cars driving round with Venezuelan flags with Líbre Venezuela on them so guess these people have more skin in the game than those pontificating here

Let me get this straight.
People who are objecting to Trump exercising imperial military agression, for obviously false premises, on a sovereign nation, are "pontificating"

Wow.
to be fair, and i speak as some who really should know, all politics on a football forum counts as 'pontificating'. it's no different from politics while sitting on a bar stool.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Do you not think it’s strange that those from the country are celebrating it, whilst also aware of all of what you are and more though?
No. I, like other informed posters in this thread, am well aware (and have actively said...) that Maduro is plainly a dodgepot and an opressive dictator. It is not surprise that there are people with optimism at his removal and hoping for something better. Though Trump is saying he is going to take over and take the oil which is some distance short of a fair election....
The logic of your position, is that it is right, if you think someone is a dodgy dictator, to make up reasons for a military attack and takeover in flagrant contravention of all international law and standards, and then swoop in and take over a nation whilst extracting its wealth for yourself.
The natural extension of that would be that Putin was entitled to go in and deal with Zelensky, who he asserted was not properly elected and is corrupt. And that China have free reign to take Taiwan. And that the US can effectively take the rest of Sout America if they choose. Not to mention Greenland. If they assess that its being run by Denmark against the will of the people there, it is therefore fair game as well....

There's a very large Venezuelan ex pat community in Spain. I can assure you the majority are not celebrating. At the very least they are scared for what the future holds and probably quite rightly feel that the country is about to have a pro US puppet installed in order to steal their mineral wealth.
