I think, him having worked there, McKenna is aware of what the support at Old Trafford can be like...

Maybe maresca is their target..

Can't see it, considering they've just sacked Amorim for calling out the board/club structure.

Caretaker manager being appointed for the rest of the season - not Darren Fletcher. I cannot see McKenna leaving for a caretaker role.

Sunderland aren't in a dog fight are they - that's our aim

It's an aim. More of a guarantee with an established Premier League club.

Look he can't be here forever. He wants to manage at the very top, challenge for titles and cups and manage on the Champions League. If he didn't then he wouldn't be the manager he is today.

I think there's a naivety in our fan base around just how highly McKenna is thought of. There were people on here not long back putting him in the same bracket as Liam Manning ffs, and its not just their recent careers that make that look silly.

McKenna is a premier league manager operating in the Championship, that's how he's viewed. He's got a good chance of getting back there with us, could probably go back there in the next couple of months with someone else if he wanted to. The question he'll be asking is whether its a big enough step up when it comes. Clearly Spurs or United would be, a West Ham or Palace is more debatable. They might be seen as a good step towards it though.

Actually he isn't that highly thought of outside our bubble. Getting a club like Ipswich promoted from the 3rd Tier isn't a particularly great achievement in the eyes of the football world. To the Premiership was more eye opening. The only evidence that clubs saw of him managing in the Premiership was a season of meak surrender. He's done great things for us but we were in a very poor position before he joined. He hasn't proved he is up to managing a Premiership club whatsoever. If anything, the proof indicates he isn't.

I'm sorry but that just isn't the case. I think Steve Parish and Tony Bloom for example would have a very different opinion to that.

Sorry, totally wrong.

Spurs hierarchy like him a lot. United were very reluctant to part with him.

He's very well regarded within the game. See Plums' comment about Henry Winter.

The style of football we played and our competitiveness in games in the first half of the PL season will have actually added to his stock.

If he’s allowed to do the job his way at Palace as opposed to a stooge coach and Man U, then yes - CP.

It’s what I’d do, but I’m not him and you may well of course be right. Let’s face it, it’s the top job in this country regardless of what MC or Liverpuddle may think.

Is it though? What is there about Man U that's the way it used to be 15-20 years ago? They don't have the pull they used to, Old Trafford's devoid of atmosphere, fans are constantly impatient and the pressure remains huge but it's all off the back of nostalgia. I'm sure a date with Margot Robbie in her 80s would be wonderful but there's no point pretending you'd be bringing back the glory days.

Why didn't Spurs hierarchy make a move in the summer then? It's clear there's a lot of pundits that can see McK for what we know he is, but the decisions in most of the Premiership clubs are being made by money men who don't necessarily know much about football, and they'll have seen one season in which McK spent a load on players who didn't work within his own system, which he stuck with week-in week-out despite it being pretty clear from an early stage it wasn't going to work. We know better from the inside, that he's learning and that with patience he'll strike gold again, but patience doesn't really abound in the "big clubs" anymore does it?

What would he be staying for though? If the United job was there for him today I don't know why you wouldn't take it now if the rationale is to hope to get a chance again in a couple of years, that just doesn't really make any sense to me. The fickle nature of football management won't change any time soon.

If you're offered the opportunity to manage Manchester United you don't turn it down to stay with Championship Ipswich, that's for the birds.

He's already on serious money, so you got to united to manage a big team. However, fall and you are unlikely to get another big team without going back down again towards the bottom of the Premier league. So why not be towards the bottom of the Premier league with Ipswich, where the expectations are low, the pressure is relatively off and the funding and backing is certainly there. Kieran has a hell of a lot of years to bide his time to go in as a well respected manager, who fans won't refer to as a PE teacher as they previously did when he was there

Because by your own example if he failed at United he’d end up in the same place as if he succeeds at Ipswich

What about if he succeeds there, as opposed to he ends up failing to get us back up here?

As I say everytime the Man Utd job is available, again, you only get one chance to manage Man Utd and the timeframe to produce results theyre looking for is now impossible, there's no patience to allow a manager to rebuild there at the moment, the went all in with Amorim and only gave him 14 months

McKenna is smart enough to wait imo

By saying he can afford to wait suggests there is (or will be) more than one chance to manage Man Utd. No?

I think he'll be desperate to take it but also that he's loyal enough to not jump ship halfway through a promotion campaign.

I imagine "Come back for me in the summer when I've got Ipswich promoted" being his reply if they approached him now, reluctantly.

Why would there not be another chance when they’ve been changing managers every two years on average since Fergie left and don’t show any sign of changing their ways?
