| Who goes into a bank 20:30 - Feb 11 with 1637 views | gtsb1966 | Lloyds closing 95 branches but to be honest I'm a Lloyds customer but I haven't needed to go into the bank once in the last 10 years. I think its a shame but you can see why they are disappearing. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/art | | | | |

Hard for them to sell many of the buildings i would've thought. Lots are listed and what do they do with the ones in town centres.

They also prefer to get cash etc from the counter as they worry about scams etc using ATMs, and appreciate the face to face interaction at the counter! Obviously the banks don’t regard this demographic as important as most are closing branches. Nationwide in Felixstowe has picked up many new customers in last year as it’s the only one open in the high now!
| Who goes into a bank on 20:51 - Feb 11 with 1286 views | blueislander | We have a unique situation here in Guernsey in that only one ATM on the island dispenses UK notes, so when travelling to the mainland we have to go to a branch to get cash. | | | |

Ok, so first the banks close all their branches so ghey can save money. Then in a few years they'll start closing the post offices too, where does that leave us then? Not sure why banks need to make even more money by closing all their branches and getting rid of all the staff.

I agree with this. My 89 year old mum has no interest in online banking or over the phone. She's never used an ATM so the closure of her Lloyds branch is going to cause some angst. She gets cash out at the post office or bank and pays her bills on demand. There must be many like her and they're being ignored. The banks will have big grand statements about CSR but it's all bull. Why would they close post offices? They do all sorts of things. The banks have no control over them and every one I go into always seems to have a queue.

Same reason that banks want to close branches, to cut costs and save money. Then they can pay their top execs/bankers bigger bonuses and higher dividends for shareholders. Not even sure who owns post offices now.

| Who goes into a bank on 21:18 - Feb 11 with 1066 views | GlasgowBlue | I have to pay in cash for business banking. The bank my business is with still has a branch in our town but 5 of the other big banks have all closed their branches. If my bank closed I'd have to go into the city centre to bank cash. | |

Banks have clear reasons they are closing though. Post Offices don't and likely won't any time soon.

The first ATM in the UK appeared in 1967, when your mum was about 30 years old, so she's done well to avoid them in the last 60 years! I'm not without sympathy, but I'm about to enter my 8th decade and I have only set foot in a bank a handful of times in the last 20 years or so. I know people like your mum, I live in Suffolk after all, but I'm more sad about pubs closing than I am about banks closing.

She uses email and can surf the web but for some reason money and transacting with it is something she's never moved with.

You can do basic banking at any post office. Then just transfer it. This obsession with branches closing is such a non issue.

This is where I agree with the OP. Who needs a bank? A bank will pay dividends to shareholders. A building society pays dividends to the customers. Nationwide paid out £100 to each account holder last year.

| Who goes into a bank on 22:04 - Feb 11 with 819 views | Swansea_Blue | My parents-in-law want to go into a branch for everything, and they really struggle with online banking and phone lines. It’s an inevitable and obvious decision by the banks, but I just wish they’d held on 10 more years. But then they’re never going to put customers’ needs over profits; it’s just the world we live in. It’s a shame. There’ll be no reason to go into small town/village centres soon and then the places will die off even more than now, while everyone wrings their hands wondering what’s happened to communities. | |

Surely need a base amount of branches available for things like that if I’m not talking complete rubbish.

We had a situation the other month where we were trying to register Mrs Cs accounts for Nationwide online banking. I tried everything using the internet and the phone lines. In the end, they told me a branch was the only place it could be sorted - and it was. I rarely use branches, but there is a need on odd occasions for certain things. That need lessens if institutions improve their online offerings and their telephone helplines. With the latter when I was registering the death of my father a couple of years ago the Bereavement lines I used were excellent. Really good service at a time when I did not need to be hanging on the end of a phone for 40 mins listening to bing bong music with no option for them to call me back. When the brother in law passed away in August the service offered by banks etc had deteriorated markedly, especially Lloyds Bank. In other words I have no particular problem using online services. In fact not having to stand in a queue in a dirty post office to renew one’s car tax etc is a positive pleasure. But they have to work properly, be invested in and improved. The social impact and changing face of the High Street? I’ve no problem with change but I do wonder what that impact will be and what towns and cities will look like in years to come.

Post office hours already restricted in lots of the smaller Post Offices, it really wouldn't surprise me at all if many close down.
