Where in a ground is the best place to watch a match 07:31 - Jun 17 with 1865 viewsKeno

From a conversation with a Grandson yesterday where do you think the best place to watch a game is?

I guess from years of standing on the North Stand I always favour behind a goal, I tend you think you can watch plan develop but accept it can be difficult to see whats going on at the far end

He has a preference for being as low in a stand as possible kind of pitch level rather than high up, and around the half way line.

So what your thoughts TWTDers ...

I guess if you was going to watch a player live like a scout the halfway line is perfect unless ur a scout from Southampton then behind a large tree will do.

At Carrow Road it’s in the trophy room. You get a completely empty room to yourself.


It’s wherever the nutters and the noise is for me. I’ll tutt at the behaviour of the nutters, but there’s nothing worse than being stuck in an area where it’s deathly silent. I quite like corners - you don’t get the foreshortening field off view out get from behind the goal, where you’ve no idea a what’s happening at the far end. And there’s something weird about the half way line. But it’s atmosphere over location for me every time.

Traditionally the best place for atmosphere to watch a match is behind the NS.

But for view and to see everything develop I would say around halfway up either stand at around the centre circle.

Very happy with my spot, near the front of the upper deck in the west stand level with the six yard line of the SBR end box. Great height for watching play develop and close view of almost all the second half attacks. Get Blue Action singing directly at us too.

I was mostly at the back behind the goal.However when watching games from the halfway line and elevated you get to appreciate tactics while also good visibility at both ends.

Depends what the ground is.

The old White Hart Lane (Shelf) and Maine Road (Kippax) had the best of both worlds, main terraces running the length of the pitch with both a great view and atmosphere.

Lower tier on West stand is where I first watched towen as a teen - North stand had adult only pricing back in the day.

Back in the day of pay on the gate and big games, the priority was getting in. Didn’t care too much where. Then settled to a pattern of standing in Churchmans (standing was always much preferred), but sometimes NS and sometimes standing down the sides.

All seater? Been all over the ground. Best atmosphere - last year of NS. Had my ST there at the time. Down the side in car rug and thermos gods waiting room middle section of West Stand followed when the NS was demolished (boo).

I tried NS and Churchmans upper - not so keen. I like to be closer. Currently I’m in the car rug section next to the Directors Box. Great view, easy access. But nothing will come close to standing, especially in NS and even Churchmans. Somehow behind the goal you really felt you were at a football match!

Agree with this. Standing in the NS was a great way to see/feel/taste/smell a football match. Maybe time has smoothed out all the rough edges of that but wonderful memories from back in the day

Better to stay silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt

If you sit in the front two rows of the Cobbold Upper, you now have to view the match through a safety glass barrier thank to the idiot from Maidstone. Best place is block E Row C, however, next season that will be given back to the away fans.

I like high behind the goal. My wife prefers lower down closer to the action but she then listens on the radio at the same time as watching. I find it difficult to tell whether the ball is going towards goal from too low down especially at the far end. You do feel closer to the action, though.

I have enjoyed being able to experience different parts of the ground. A few are more of a problem due to the lack of leg room more than the view itself.

If you’re really into seeing the tactics and how plays are set up, there’s no better place than the upper tiers of the SBR or SAR. With no one in front of you, the seats directly behind P1 & P2 in SAF offers a great view.
