| Surprise surprise on 19:53 - Jul 5 with 1029 views | Joey_Joe_Joe_Junior | The correct call, thank god for that… Ok now I’ve got your attention. Just what this competition didn’t need. US have been playing really well and now any win tomorrow (should it happen will be tainted). Terrible look all round, especially as it’s the hosts and the relationship with FIFA has been evident to see in the build up. Same treatment for Ronaldo when he got sent off vs Ireland but was allowed to start the World Cup group stage games. Can’t just reverse suspensions for a subjective call under some random article, what precedent does it set! Also undermining their own appointed officials and technology! Only 36 hours until kick off as well. Not good at all. [Post edited 5 Jul 19:55]

| Surprise surprise on 18:23 - Jul 5 by Zx1988 | Ronaldo got the same treatment at the end of the qualifiers. Picked up a three-match ban for elbowing O'Shea. Served the first match in the final qualifier against Albania and then, conveniently, had the final two matches suspended. Just a pure coincidence that those two suspended matches would have been Portugal's first two WC games. |
The reason given was that Ronaldo had a previously exemplary record of having no international red cards. So of course every player at this World Cup who has not had a previous red card has been reprieved. Apart from of course they haven't and so the reason has been entirely fabricated.

| Surprise surprise on 19:56 - Jul 5 with 1028 views | Nthsuffolkblue | Well, if there's any justice in that then Balogun will have a stinker, score an own goal and give away the match-winning penalty (or miss the decisive kick in a shoot-out). Or it would be quite amusing if the referee simply sends him off after a few minutes and VAR refuses to review it so they had to play with 10 men without him for the whole match. | |

| Surprise surprise on 17:53 - Jul 5 by Zx1988 | Absolute joke - not even a borderline red. Makes an absolute mockery of the disciplinary system if suspensions become optional, based on the whim of FIFA. I look forward to all other red cards receiving a similar treatment going forwards. |
The match TV commentators said at the time they thought it an extremely harsh red, only given because of the super slo-mo rather shocking image of the player's ankle. Having said that, not really surprised at the overturning through pressure from "the recipient of the first-ever FIFA Peace Prize" ;and yet more corruption from the increasingly unacceptable, outdated, ridiculous organisation that is Fifa.

I am sure there is an argument over whether it should have been a red card. However, they haven't re-refereed the incident a third time to overturn it (which would absolutely show VAR up as a complete joke). They have suspended the punishment for it instead.

Yes, my 'overturning' was the wrong choice of word there, agree.

Was just thinking that myself. Or, even better, VAR sends him to the monitor and he still refuses to overturn it.

You know, I could've sworn it was against FIFA's rules too, but I could be wrong.

| Surprise surprise on 18:21 - Jul 5 by Mark | A suspended red card!? I have never heard of that before in all my years of following football. Just when I started getting into this year's World Cup this happens and now I don't feel like watching once again. I will just watch the England matches mainly. |
They did it for Ronaldo already- he should not have played the first two games. Corruption. White House influence. Completely undermines integrity of the game and tournament. Lets be clear about this. We CANNOT trust a single thing FIFA say or do. Or indeed, things like VAR referrals. We do not know what influence is being exerted or instructions given. We do not even know if the automated var is gerrymandered. This utterly blatant corruption gives cause to seriously question everything else. [Post edited 5 Jul 21:23]

Every other nation should be standing together and objecting to this. Completely undermines the tournament. Though so did the Ronaldo one. The massive outcry there will be if there is a key red card and ban between now and the final though, for another team, if they dont get the same treatment.

I am appalled at what he did re Farage. But no actual evidence to suggest he is on the take like FIFA or undermining the integrity of the game.

Belgian FA are spot on. They are directly prejudiced by this. Get the lawyers in. Not because I want to see a farce but because if we let this go, it becomes normal and the international game is fecked.
