With all these incoming players, who leaves? 20:07 - Jul 20 with 5030 viewsIP1Blue

With as many as 6 deals being worked, we can expect a busy few weeks and I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s 4/5 more after that.

Who leaves though from last years squad?

Akpom?
Egeli / McCateer ( now burns has signed a deal) ?
Szmodics ?
Philogene ?
Johnson?
Walton/Palmer?
Hirst?

Will Mehmeti/Nunez suit GON system (not saying there not good enough, just a question) - think we’re in for a busy few weeks in both directions

Ali
Clarke
Scmodics
Palmer
Ogbene

I'd 100% all of them.

Taylor, likely subject to incoming, how much did we pay for him?

Walton
Phologene both maybe.

Hirst if we sign another 2 strikers but even then I think you want 4, would he be happy as 4th choice

Akpom as above I'd guess but he wasnt played in his best position last year. Maybe GON sees him differently.

Johnson I think offers so much versatility you keep him. He can plug number of gaps but may want more game time

Akpom scored two in the behind closed doors friendly the other day (same amount he scored all season)

But only if there is a chance of his playing.

If not, it would be better to have him elsewhere playing and improving as a player, rather than repeating what happened to Baggott last season.

Honestly don't agree with this. Why would he improve more elsewhere? We need to keep him and mold him into what we need, not have him out to the whims of another manager.

He's still incredibly young, it's nothing like Baggot at all in my view.

And we might need him.

Hirst possibly okay as a third choice … maybe. He’s not great.

Taylor - sentiment aside, nowhere near PL quality. We are in trouble if he starts.

Agree - Greaves a good back up.

You need squad players.

People have written off Taylor three summer windows in a row now. He's just off the back of his best season with us and he's coming into his prime.

Unless our business in midfield is outrageously good, getting rid of Taylor would be silly in my opinion.

Personally think we’d be mad to let a player of Philogene’s quality leave unless he absolutely wants out. We will need goals and he can certainly deliver on that front.

I also feel the same about Szmodics. If his beef was with McKenna (or vice versa) and he’s not a disruptive element, I say keep him as he’s a very capable goalscorer.

Palmer, H Clarke, Humphreys, Ogbene, Akpom and Al-Hamidi should be sold or loaned out.

Not sure Nunez, Mehmeti and McAteer are good enough for the PL but would be reasonable squad players

Taylor
Humphreys
Clarke H
Akpom
Szmodics
Hirst
Philogene
Palmer
Greaves
Button
Johnson

I think Taylor stays. I reckon O'Neil will see a bit of himself in Taylor and take a liking to him. Greaves will stay. I can see Johnson staying and having an important role too. Button looks like he is staying unless he's just training to keep fit.

Humphreys/H Clarke will likely move on permanently.

Question marks over Akpom and Hirst. I'm not sure what their roles could be for this season.

I imagine Szmodics, Philogene and Palmer will have options and look to move on. I actually believe Szmodics would be the type of player that O'Neil would like the look of, but it doesn't appear that he is with the squad in Spain or been a part of pre season at all.

Taylor
Hirst
Greaves

You been on the Shandy ?

Hirst will be off. Perfect time to cash in on a player (and release a good accounting profit) that we have outgrown now. Back end of the season, Azon was our go to number 9 and most people probably accept he isn't good enough for us in the PL.

#17 Sheeran hasn’t made much impact. See also MarkTWTD. A new club may do them both good.

That Sheeran chap. I hear he's agent is touring him around the States for big money?

Will be a bit weird for him when he returns from touring as most of the players he knew will be gone as is the manager.

People holding on to Egeli being a number 9 because he scored some goals for Norway under 7's makes me laugh

However the Plusvalenza might make it attractive for us to sell. He’s been here a while, would be nearly all profit surely.

I don't think he'll play as a 9, but as a 10 I can see that.

He's great at getting shots off, but whether he'd suit our system where I strongly suspect it'll be about two players being able to get up the pitch quick and hold it up, I don't think that's going to be us this year.

Ironically, he may suit a better team than us who control the ball for long periods.

Not writing him off by any stretch. You don't pay £17m for an unproven teenager without seeing something.

Although I do agree, i've not seen many "oh wow" moments from him to see it's going to be a common occurrence as he progresses.

I think he has to go out on loan and play games, we carried him at times last season and really can't afford to be doing that this year. Isnt much use to his development sitting in the stands all year either. Towards the end of last season he couldnt even make our bench.

Where you send him is the problem, doubt he even gets in the top champ teams next season?

Probable departures IMO

Palmer
Clarke (H)
Szmodics
Ogbene
Humphreys
Al-Hamedi

Possible Departures

Furlong
Taylor
Hirst
Philogene
Akpom
Mehmeti

I suppose that's the one good thing about O'Neil coming in, is that there will be no sentimentality.
I think a few in the group will be expected to show their worth during this week.

Why would Egeli leave? He doesn't count towards a squad place.

SB

My guess would be because he didn't look a particularly very strong player in a championship squad, so will be even further behind in a PL squad.
He needs a season loan somewhere

Everyone thinking Egeli had a bad season when he scored 5 important goals in his first season in English football off the right wing.

I think he will continue to get better. Be patient.

Then send him out on loan.

People are really going overboard about him and re-writing last season. The kid was struggling in the second half of the season and it was getting difficult to watch him. I didn't see any real strength or pace (at the moment) so I've no idea why he can be a 9 or a 10.

He wasn't continuing to get better, he was getting worse. Sorry, but that's the truth.

Think he needs a loan out.

I dont see oneil having managed where he has looking at them and thinking yep theyll be good enough.

Greaves im caught on. But hes beem bullied by champ strikers in the air and in battles and has a mad tendency of diving into tackles needlesly. I do think he may go.

Greaves bullied in the air?

He was statistically one of the single most elite aerial defenders in the entire division.
114 aerial duels won (top 3%), and top 2% for percentage of aeriel duels won (66%).

And top 4% for ground duels won.

Aware of stats. I was told these are best not to be used as a defence of a what people view with their eyes.

So will run with that.

If stats can be used great. Ill be able to go back to my useage of them.

If Taylor is our starting CM after the transfer window closes, you are right, we are in a world of trouble.

However, we need a squad of players rather than a starting XI. There will likely be 4 or 5 players that are effectively backup - only really likely to get into the matchday squad if there are injuries or suspensions, but crucial backup if that does happen. The likes of Taylor, Kipre, Hirst will fill those roles while trying to prove they deserve not to be in them. I think it would be next to impossible to persuade someone to join the club to fill such a role, unless they were at the very start or very end of their career.

I think he will stay and train with better players in the way we want him to play. He doesn't cost a squad place and going to a champ team we a lose all control at development. He's still very young, he can go out on loan next season if required.

Using the loan market to develop our players hasn't worked for any I can think of off the top of my head in the last 5 years or so, none of them have made it or improved by what is required.

Where does only training with the first team benefit him? It didnt develope Humphreys or Baggott. How does not playing develop a young player?
You could argue Humphreys made his biggest strides whilst at loan at Wycombe, but then stood still when he wasn't used the first half of last season.
What's wrong with him gaining experience elsewhere where he can gain confidence at a suitable level? Loans are used universally to bring on young players. Don't we have dedicated loans personnel who's job it is to find appropriate loans. It's their responsibility to get him the right move.

Egeli went backwards the second half of the season and looked out of his depth. Why would he find the PL easier?

Because we are in control of where he plays and how he develops and lets be honest, he has a far higher potential ceiling than either of those players.

I've only voiced my opinion, maybe he will go out on loan but I would prefer he stayed and trained around much better players that we are getting in and given he doesn't take a squad place you never know if he will be needed.

Where have I said he would find the PL easier or even play? You're not really engaging with what I've actually written.

I never said you did say he'd find it easier, but if you want him to stay, then he's got to be prepared to play for us ( not just train with us).... and it will be a lot harder level to play at.

This thing about having control about where he plays. After a year here, we still don't know his best position. And we can't guarantee him a spot as a 10 when there are better players in front of him.. Isn't it part of a footballers education to be versatile and play in various positions. Look at England, Bellingham plays 10, but also plays deeper. Rodgers plays as a 10, but was moved out wide. And so on. We can't keep on babying him and making excuses for him because he's our "wonderkid".
If he comes back to the club having put on a couple of kilos of muscle and is a little quicker and looking sharp in training and Gaz fancies him, it's a pointless conversation, but if he's the same as he was a couple of months back, then maybe a loan move could well be the best option. He looked miserable as well. I felt for the lad and maybe he needs new temporary surroundings.

He just moved from one country to another at a young age and you say he looked miserable and then say that perhaps another move away from the ties he has made around the club would be good for him.

I honestly don't see the logic in that statement but seems we won't agree which is fine, lets see what happens.
