Greatest all-time controller of football 16:28 - Aug 12 with 2321 viewsmonty_radio

Poster J Dozzell asserts that Enciso had the greatest control that he’d personally seen. I’m not sure that we’ve had a thread recently or maybe at all that focused on that specific attribute. So who do you think in the annals of the Town fits that for you? For me, I think of Danny Hegan, Viljoen, Thijssen - even Petta on a good day.

Thijsen did indeed have wonderful control.

Didz was pretty decent to be fair.

Ade Akinbiyi couldn't hit a cows arse with a banjo...

Frans Thijssen. No-one could get the ball off him. That outside of the boot thing too....

Darren Currie made up for no pace with excellent ball control.

My memory’s rubbish and we don’t have as many clips of our greats as we do now, but in more modern times you’d struggle to beat this for a bit of outrageous control and skill (0:58):

Agreed - for me Frans Thijssen without a doubt. I was convinced the ball was stuck to his boot at times.

My memory of Viljoen was that he was a wonderful passer and silky in his movement. (A young teenage Vic used to try to copy him). He was rivalled only by Muhren. But I can remember his control. For control it has to be Franz T.

I’m adamant that if Currie had pace he would’ve played at the highest level.

Always think these historical ones need a caveat about the globalisation of football.

When I started watching football in the 1990s, a Premier League footballer was likely to be in the Top 500 players in Britain and Ireland. These days it's more likely they need to be in the Top 1000 or so in the world.

So good chance, even if we get relegated, relative to world football, we're still looking at one of the best group of footballers ever to represent us.*

*Obviously Bobby's best teams were amongst the best in the world full stop, so this context doesn't apply to them.

You're right. That's because Kaiser Frans would control and shield the ball, often taking 2 or 3 opponents out of the game in one movement, then give it to Saint Arnie, who would launch a defence splitting pass to Mariner, Brazil or Gates, then shortly afterwards it would be 1-0 to Ipswich.

E.g.

I rest my case.
