I assume everyone got the government alert? 19:02 - Aug 14 with 6215 viewspointofblue

A bit worrying it's even necessary for them to ask people to... basically do the obvious, especially in the middle of a heat wave.

James Callaghan knew the solution. Appoint a Minister for drought, within a short time he became Minister for floods.

People don't think though, and many are probably oblivious to the news, so makes sense to send a message to phones at a time so much of the country is on fire.

The amount of litter everywhere worries me, as the sun shining through discarded glass could start fires.

To be fair. It certainly got my attention as pretty irritating, but therefore effective in me getting the message.

Made me think about bbqs though 🤤

It will now cause people to assume that there is no urgent emergency and its just Burnham showing off.

This is surely for incoming nukes, for local disasters etc where it is URGENT.

Yep, I can see that - but being near the W Mids fires it is pretty devastating to be fair to hear the impact. So if another idiot doesn’t have a bbq tomorrow and throws it over their fence (what I was told anyway) then it may save a few houses and livelihoods. 🤞

Walking the dog, too busy avoiding tree roots & other trip hazards to pick up, wondered what the horrendous screeching noise was.

No trace of it, message or alert left on my phone, which is ridiculous. Only found out what it was by looking on here.

That said.... they did an emergency alert?!!! Why FFS. Absolutely pathetic. Glad I turned mine off when they first brought it in.

Not that big a problem (to receive an alert) is it?

Met have just said there will be NO significant rainfall until the end of Sept, so risks remain till then

They then predict an extreme wet spell from Oct on the dry ground, so floods will then be a thing

God help us all 🫣

You forget how many complete idiots there are.

The number I've seen say, the fires are started by arson so it's not climate change.

Depressingly dumb.

We all did. And it was pretty pointless if you ask me, contained no actual information beyond ‘careful, there are fires about’

They are supposed to be for actual emergencies like incoming missiles, tsunamis, alien invasion and KFC running out of chicken. Using it for something like today kind of undermines confidence in it.

Currently on a weekend break in Wales and the alert flashed up in Welsh which is unfortunate as I don’t understand Welsh. And the dozen or so Welsh people who were close by also had no idea what the message said.

The English version came through about a minute later.

The UK is experiencing unprecedented drought and the country is effectively a tinderbox.

Emergency services and government are extremely concerned about the risk of urban and rural wildfires that could run out of control. Fire services are at breaking point. London stations are being called out almost continuously. But the rural risk is very high, with hugh consequence. And they’re now calling it out.

They have held a Cobra meeting, and this emergency alert will have come from this.

People are causing the fires, and I’m not sure how you can say the alert held no information - it was clear.

Also people stating it’s late in the day and this will be our last heatwave?! It’s going to be 28c for most of the next week with no rain. The risk is therefore now very high.

A real mass stupidity in UK PLC at the moment it seems - w@nkers like Farage and the Daily Mail denying climate change and denying the need to rejoin Europe economically, and listening to MAGA bullsh!t about made up crime figures.

This alert was a necessary and positive step.
