I personally thought he did very well before and after the goal, the assist and the ton of other stuff he put into his appearance

Yeah, the thing which held back Xavi, Garrincha, Baresi , Messi, Cordoba, Maradonna etc was being small and for most of their career, lithe.
If I was to be really critical, the thing that was most apparent was trying to do too much with his passes early on in the game, but it worked out ok. |  |

He got absolutely clatter by their number 10 in the first few seconds, didn’t lose possession, got up and shook himself down and got on with it. Absolutely no problem with his physicality, I would prefer him agile and hard to catch than a bollard.

That had me off my seat. I got more excited by that than the goal. He's a very good technical tackler. Don't need strength if you time your tackles that well. | |

He'll definitely bulk up, naturally over time.. He is only 18, and for his age I wouldn't say he was light weight...
But I totally get your point.. Reading through the thread, people making comparisons to other slightly built players. Not sure many of those played in EFL Lg1. Where the game can be a lot more physical and protection from refs is inconsistent to say the least. We saw in recent seasons how our midfield has gotten bullied in games...
I guess what you are trying to say , is, that he'll be even better once he's bulked out a bit?
Looking back to Matt Holland. He wasn't the biggest player on the pitch. But he'd make a lot of fans favorite teams. And he dominated midfields.
Probably comes two fold with time/experience. Not just the bulking up, but learning how to ride a tackle better and position yourself so as not to get clattered..
We'll probably get to see a bit more of Humphreys during Evan's recovery. I'm sure he won't disappoint .. Aside from the obvious goal and assist, what impressed me most the other night was his heart and his engine. Two of Holland's traits, right there. Can't help comparing the two... |  | | |

I wouldn’t tell Pirlo, Xavi, Kante or Bannan to bulk up and all of them play or played in central midfield.
Physically he already has real attributes like his stamina and movement that match his will and determination. For example, when he got way ahead of the strikers and crossed for the third or came across to the touchline to slide in and stop a Vale counter in its tracks.
He’ll get stronger anyway as he keeps playing and developing, but I don’t think he has a playing style that requires him to bulk up or risk slowing him down around the pitch. Humphreys is tough enough to take the punishment (Conlon’s early markers against him were pretty quickly shrugged off) and to compete with his opponents, so we should focus on developing his own game and strengths: very good on and off the ball, perfectly suited to playing out from the back, a willing runner, a composed attacker and potential assist machine, snappy and committed in the tackle, and all with the regular flashes of quality that win games.
Even with more power, raw pace or even height etc. I don’t think that focus would or should change much. |  |
