Seeing lots of people say we’ll comfortably stay up…. 11:29 - Jul 18 with 8936 viewsMatt_Netherlands

Is this a bit naive? Feel like some people are in for a bit of a nasty surprise at the big step up in quality this year.

We’ve had an incredible two years and we are strengthening very sensibly, but for me I still think it’ll be one hell of an achievement to stay up. I’ll take 17th place on goal difference right now.

I applaud the courage and optimism, but I just hope that doesn’t lead to blind complacency and the whole atmosphere around the club turning a bit sour if we got off to a bad start - which is very very possible.

Look at Sheff Utd last season. Went up with a similar number of points to us, spent a fair bit of money and then got ripped to shreds. I think our league cup game against Fulham last year shows there’s still a huge gap between the championship and mid table prem teams.

I fully trust in the process and know Kieran will have us incredibly well prepared, but I just hope there’s no sense of complacency and entitlement when the season kicks off.

Sensible Simon, over and out.

Sheff united lost their best 2 or 3 players. Spent but net spend was minimal.

Hope we stay up easily but think it’s going to be a slog.

Dont think it will be comfortable but I think we have what it takes to be safe.
Would have been concerned if KM had gone, but I have full confidence in him.

Seen Fulham match mentioned a couple of times in reference to us finding the Premier League challenging…the lineup we had against them, wasn’t our first XI and had a few very rare starters in it (Ball and Aluko to name a couple).

It’s going to be really tough but the first team has got the ability and the manager to have a really good go at this.

In the same vein, we beat Wolves.

I'd take a 50% home win rate this season. That would give us 27 points and put us well on the way to starying up.

I think the gap between championship and premiership has certainly got bigger and harder to bridge. Last season's 3 promoted teams all came straight back down again. I'd expected Burnley to do better considering they'd stormed the championship in their promotion season. Doesn't bode well but we have a great manager in McKenna. I wouldn't want anyone else in charge.

We have unity across the entire football club, momentum and a fantastic manager, this can take us a long long way. If we (as fans) can adopt the 'if we concede we will just sing louder type mentality', it can be incredibly powerful.

So I think mindset is going to be massive, both on and off the pitch.

Good on people for being optimistic. And part of me does feel like with McKenna anything is possible.

But as you say it is going to be incredibly hard. Id be amazed if we stay up 'comfortably'. 2 years ago we were in league one. I know that stat has been done to death but its incredible. The rise has been so fast that the squad we came up with needs a lot of work. I still think we need 5/6 more.

We just need to enjoy the ride and really back the team every week even in the moments where we are being completely outplayed which will happen.

Ultimately we need to be better than 3 other teams and we would have had an amazing season. Bring it on.

If KM and Ashton deliver on what they said, which was fundamentally 'We'll give it a good go.'.

Then I do think we'll do OK. We have enough about us to score goals - certainly against the lower to mid table teams.

The reality is we may get a good going over by the top teams at times.

I'd rather we stayed true to the approach that has served us well, high press, high tempo attacking football than just park the bus.

It will be what it will be but I can see us somewhere around 15th (the irony of that position isn't lost on me).

There is some extreme delusion. The funniest one was someone saying Ashton and McKenna definitely wouldn't take 17th now.

It's a massive step up. I have every confidence in McKenna and the squad though.

As ever when you feel there’s a possibility of relegation, you also have to look at whether there will be 3 teams worse than us. Leicester or Soton? Both have buckets of recent Prem experience, but Leicester have lost their manager (although have got a good replacement), plus they will likely be deducted points. Think Soton will be ok. Brentford? Seem to be on a slight downward curve. Everton? Perennial relegation possibilities, but Dyche gets results, again depends on poss sanctions. Forest? Decent manager, second season there with a full transfer window under his belt, plus they’ve had an other season of prem experience. Possible strugglers I guess, but no means guaranteed. At the moment, I am struggling to see realistic strugglers. As for us, I do agree, I think it will be a rude awakening. When in League 1, we got in players ready for the Championship, with huge amounts of Championship experience, which was a great strategy that saw great results. My concern is that this time around, we don’t have a team stuffed full of Prem experience. However, we do have KM and MA, so I am as hopeful as I can be, but I can see us getting walloped a few times with the way we play, unless KM changes the way we play.

It's going to be a massive achievement and massive ask to stay up this year - I think we will because of McKenna basically and how he is being backed.

The quality of other PL teams is insane, we'll need some luck along the way

This is where most fans I talk to are at. Not certainty that we will stay up by any means, and it will be hard. But we 'have what it takes', and if I were to put my money where my mouth is at the current odds I would back us to stay up. Is it possible that we go down? yes. Is it possible that we finish top half? Yes, although it would be a crazy achievement.

Without Kieran, I think it would have been an incredible achievement to stay up, but with the financial backing that's been shown, by no means impossible.

Yeah, any talk of finishing above 17th is for the birds really. We just need to concentrate on being better than 3 other teams, which under McKenna I trust us to be.

Leicester *should* have a points deduction.
We were better than Southampton last season and McKenna is better than Martin.

Brentford and Forest are the other two I would have in my sights.

Your 3rd para is the one for me - won't take much for divs who have been accustomed to us winning every week to start moaning.

We'll probably be on the end of a few nasty results but those won't define what happens to us. Basically we need to get slightly better results than 3 other teams and make sure we do the business against those teams that are likely to be around us down the bottom. I think we can just about do that but it won't be easy by any stretch.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.

I agree. There seems to be an awful lot of people saying we will stay up comfortably and some even suggesting top 10 or qualifying for europe. this is wholly unrealistic imho, and on that basis there are going to be an awful lot of people disappointed when their expectations are not met.

What I would say to those people is look through the other teams and squads and start making a list of those you think we will finish above, there aren't too many if we are honest. Now we all know football is not played on paper and maybe our team spirit and the Mckenna factor can ensure we become more than the sum of our parts again, even at this level, but I think we need to apply caution and come at it from the viewpint that finishing 17th will be an amazing acheivement and anything other than that will be dreamland and a huge bonus.

I would hate for the support base to turn negative due to having unrealistic expectations. The reality is we will lose a lot of games ( compared to what we are used to ) and probably suffer a few hidings along the way as well. We need to stay together when that happens and keep backing the manager and players.

I do think a lot depends on who else we bring in during this window also, I hope the best is yet to come, 3 or 4 more top additions and I may change my viewpoint slightly.

I don't think the whole 'lets be better than 3 other teams' is the right way to approach this League at all.

We need to approach it with a 'Man City' will be hard, anyone else is fair game type attitude, else we will go down.

As long as we don't do a Nodge and finish bottom last 3 times they were promoted showing zero ambition then I'll be happy.

I'm going for something like 16th with Leicester, Forest and Brentford to go down.

However, if we did go down, hopefully with a decent fight then we'll be in a fantastic position to bounce back at the first attempt.

Bournemouth ? I know they have a good manager, some decent players and having just a modest stadium does not mean poor ability to compete with all the other income streams that come into the Premier League financial viability picture. But I do feel that one season soon their fortunes will unravel.

And, echoing the first paragraph of LankHenners post, it is going to be a much more uneven supporter experience than the last two and a half years. It will be 'interesting' to see how some of our fans cope with that.

It’s a huge task. That won’t stop there being a sense of complacency and entitlement amongst some fans. It’s what fans do.

Just to add, we obviously can’t control what happens on the pitch. But we can choose how we respond to it. I hope people don’t lose their 💩 with KM and the players if/when things don’t go well. We’ve already seen bits of that in the last two seasons. This year’s going to be MUCH harder than either of those.

In a way, that's the biggest test the communications part of the club (as well as the local media) faces. Keeping brave and upbeat in the face of inevitable defeats will see us get some unexpected bounce-back wins and keep the euphoric roll going! COYB!

Prem survival is harder than Champ promotion, while most of our players will be of no interest to the weakest clubs in the division, even as backup squad players. Tis what it is! Still I'm very optimistic for another stunning season.

Yeah, McKenna and the players will take it one game at a time and hope to get a result in every game. I don't think our approach changes. But as fans, it is all about making sure we stay up. Can't be getting too ahead of ourselves and creating further expectations.
