It's America first and palling up with Russia, North Korea etc suits their China strategy more than the old transatlantic alliance.
JD Vance being somewhat rude to his hosts on 22:24 - Feb 14 with 8198 views | Guthrum | The US withdrawing all support for Europe. It costs them money which can better be spent on rich people. What they fail to see is this will instead cost them relevance and influence. But Europe will have to look to its own strength if it wants to avoid being carved up. That's Europe in a wider sense, not just the EU or the rump of NATO. We may have to cosy up to China - at least they're predictable.

JD Vance being somewhat rude to his hosts on 22:56 - Feb 14 with 8085 views | Churchman | I think it’s clarifying things quite nicely actually. Knowing your enemies and those you need to move away from is a positive. America is moving towards itself and those it considers important - Russia, N Korea, China. The strongmen of the world. The rules for Americans are around those they can fleece and bend to their will. Where can they make a buck and who cares about the consequences. If they can rope in so called allies to legitimise their actions, great, but for those patsies there’s nothing but humiliation, as we’ve seen in the wars of the last 20 years. Lessons learned. Right up to Entente Cordiale the rule was that the Royal Navy was to be bigger than the next two potential enemies - take two from Germany, France and America. There’s a reason for that. Vance has done the U.K. a big favour. There’s truth in some of what he said but his crude Kaiser-esque bombast is telling us to move away from the US as fast as possible. This is a European country - time to embrace that. We have partners outside the U.K. too. America can no longer be one of the as it can no longer be trusted. But they don’t have to know that for now. So nothing to worry about. We now know what America is where they stand.

While the EU was and is primarily a trading bloc, it's inevitable that it will now be forced to become a tighter political union and, potentially, a standalone military alliance in replacement for a now impotent NATO. Brexit will seem an even bigger cck up in light of such a move.

The reasonable centre likes to debate and agonise and compromise and form committees with vetoes. Global heating? Fk around for thirty years posturing and having conferences and pretending that short-term gain aggressive capitalist interests actually intend to moderate their actions and help save the future? - Bullsh!t! - Nothing happens, we're dead. Trump's monstrous international cabal? Ooh - let's compromise and try to talk with them and negotiate amongst ourselves for four years until it goes away (lol) - No. Cut them off, form a European Security Agency and trading structure with simple and unfussy constitution, don't squabble about national trivialities, just do it. I think the message from the US is clear. Europe needs to take care of itself now. The choice is to come together and take the measures you’ve outlined and I’d add as well the need for very significant expansion of military capabilities, or simply be picked off one nation at a time. Unity and strength now or our apologies to every generation that follows us.

The problem is that I don’t think the current government gets it any more than the last shower did. Empty words from them. The reality is that they loathe any idea of spending money on defence. They are locked into the ‘peace dividend’ which means going to the budget well for other things. Conduct a review, ignore it, while the army shrinks and equipment goes to the scrap heap or is sold. This is the policy and it won’t change. Vague promises of maybe this sometime when? Don’t bother Rachel. It’s as fictitious as your CV. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czep44jn9jyo The army is much weaker than Dannett is saying. It’s down to just over 60k. Poor equipment, poor conditions, lack of political will and support. They’re not interested. The people who serve deserve so much better than this. Yes, the nature of war is changed by Russia/Ukraine but you’ll always need boots on the ground. If we can find the money to line the pockets of Rishi and Boris’ mates during Covid, we can find the money to improve our defence capability. In an uncertain world it should be priority 1.

Yep, read the same and the reality that the military today isn’t ready for the new world order or to commit the numbers needed to contribute to a European peacekeeping force in Ukraine which would be absolutely necessary. Europe needs to assert an influence in the international sphere that it’s not equipped to do. We are where we are but need to change and yes I agree the priority now needs to be defence. The money needs to be found and it’s time the super rich contributed more properly. The rest of us will have to as well. We’ll be taxed more and our children and grandchildren may be conscripted but the world we live in now is screaming that the strong will take what they want and the weak will submit or die. The only answer is to be strong. That’s what it’s come to. I don’t like it but that’s the direction it’s heading and there’s no time to waste.

I don’t like it either Horsham. It’s madness what humanity likes to do to itself. But it’s reality and been a reality for more than a decade. Shame our useless and in some cases corrupt politicians have chosen to invest time and money in their own bizarre ideologies (Brexit etc). Literally billions hosed up the wall on that. When the work was being done in the run up to 2019 those working on it were told the budget was unlimited. There was no budget. The contingency team for if the lights went out and Dover crossing traffic backed up to Dartford etc on day one alone cost something like £1,5bn. Money up the wall - the team were stood down, but had to be funded (this is on public record). Bogus Covid contracts and stupid schemes? Billions instantly found - £840m for eat out to help out alone. Plenty of money then. Other small examples - India who send rockets into space, loath this country (for good historical reason) and trade with Russia receive what £49m a year in foreign aid they don’t need. There’s a few soldiers paid for. France were given £500m for three years border control. Some Christmas box, given they probably used the money to subsidise free rail travel for migrants to get across France and to pay for the dinghies to be transported from Turkey. Don’t blame them either. It’s just a question of priority. Other solutions? Reeves could for example say that in an unstable world defence is no longer bottom priority. It’s not in what was Manifesto planning so 1p is going on income tax. £10bn raised instantly - £12bn if you made it 2p for high rate tax payers. That’s 0.5%GDP whopped into the defence pot. Since they hate pensioners, beyond a certain income they can pay NI (that’d include me btw and I’d be fine with it). Oh and I’d beef up collection from those that don’t pay and the serious crime people that drain millions from this country. [Post edited 15 Feb 10:45]
