JD Vance being somewhat rude to his hosts on 09:12 - Feb 15 by Churchman | The problem is that I don’t think the current government gets it any more than the last shower did. Empty words from them. The reality is that they loathe any idea of spending money on defence. They are locked into the ‘peace dividend’ which means going to the budget well for other things. Conduct a review, ignore it, while the army shrinks and equipment goes to the scrap heap or is sold. This is the policy and it won’t change. Vague promises of maybe this sometime when? Don’t bother Rachel. It’s as fictitious as your CV. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czep44jn9jyo The army is much weaker than Dannett is saying. It’s down to just over 60k. Poor equipment, poor conditions, lack of political will and support. They’re not interested. The people who serve deserve so much better than this. Yes, the nature of war is changed by Russia/Ukraine but you’ll always need boots on the ground. If we can find the money to line the pockets of Rishi and Boris’ mates during Covid, we can find the money to improve our defence capability. In an uncertain world it should be priority 1. |

The conditions, equipment and the quality of both officers and soldiers is better than it has ever been. Your point about lack of political (and public) will and support is spot on though. It does not matter how good personnel, training, equipment and conditions are if the numbers are not there.

Brexit will seem an even bigger cck up in light of such a move. |

The agenda funded from Russia. The same Russia that barrel bombed Syria so their refugees flooded west at the point where absentee media barons were pumping out anti-EU rhetoric to force a catastrophic referendum. There's a place in London beside the Thames for the enablers of this. We should use it.

The US have helped bring it on Europe too, with the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Admittedly, some European countries joined in but they wouldn't have started those on their own accord. It was all about cosying up to Uncle Sam.

no one argues that free speech is absolute. articles 9 and 10 make it plain that free speech is not absolute. but free speech does certainly extend to things you disagree with and does apply to things you think are incorrect. however politically opposed t someone you are, they still have human rights under articles 9 and 10. anyway, footy.

Bit of a stupid thing to throw in the direction of the UK. We've had 14 years of conservative governance. In that time they ripped up the status quo with regards to immigration - 1. Ended the free movement of people in Europe by pulling us out of the EU. 2. Introduced a points-based immigration system 3. Made it illegal for people arriving on small boats to claim asylum. 4. Limited the scope of visas - Eg, student visa deny ability to bring families. 5. We have agreements in place with other nations to stop immigration. Over 600m signed off between 2021 and 2023 to given to France to help stop immigration to the UK. Returns agreements signed with India, Pakistan, and so on. In many ways we are further ahead in our immigration restrictions than the US. For example: 1. They have birthright immigration, we do not. 2. We have salary thresholds, they do not. - bringing spouses, working visas So he is wrong on immigration. Aside from deporting people who already have post-immigration status, I'm really struggling to see what people think should be done in a practical sense? Then there is freedom of speech. You've never been freer to express your opinion to a massive audience. The biggest online readership of newspapers is the Sun. It's only behind the BBC overall and followed by Sky. Of course he's wrong. We had a populist government for years and it was an absolute disaster - the country's in a mess as result, people are poorer and the UK is now less influential and more vulnerable to attacks like this. The idea that somehow the 'will of the people' has been ignored is a load of bollox.

Its clear as day. Did you even read the article before suggesting otherwise? Not an opinion. Clear fact. according to the ons, in the past 4 years net immigration in the uk has totalled some 3 million. who made that decision, when was it announced, did the public get to express a view on it? the idea that immigration isn't a matter of public concern in the uk, or that it was reduced by the tories, is laughable.

So 14 years of disruptive immigration policies have totally failed? When Brexit happened it was celebrated as winning back control of our borders. Is it because people are still needed in our NHS, to pick crops on our industrial farms, and so on? Again, where is the line? What do you actually want? Because many said the policies would fail because ultimately our systems need these people. Eg, you want less immigrants in the NHS, pay people a better salaries to be there and educate them. Eliminate the demand = no need for supply.

Governments are not honest about this. They talk about immigration, but our economy and services will collapse without it. We cant man the basic services, NHS, care homes etc without people from aborad willing to do those jobs. Of course, some of that problem is the depression of public sector wages, and profiteering large companies who refuse to pay a reasonable basic wage and expect subsidy via benefits from the state.

They play to the electorate and the press. I am sure most voters believe the Conservatives have brought immigration down (or have been prevented from doing so by the EU or something ridiculous like that). It is in their interests to keep it as a (negative) issue whilst pretending to be the only party that will do something about it.

"They talk about immigration, but our economy and services will collapse without it. We cant man the basic services, NHS, care homes etc without people from aborad willing to do those jobs." this is the sort of thing that people repeat because it sounds lovely. but it is just not a factual explanation of current migration numbers. only a minority of the net migration of 3 million in the past 4 years have come to work. of those who have come to work a small minority are skilled. those who have come to work in the nhs or the care sector are a tiny proportion of the 3 million total. it's like saying that people own dogs because they guide the blind - well a very small proportion do.
