What's my motivation? 21:57 - Dec 4 with 2047 viewscbower

Walton, Davis, O'Shea and Matusiwa - we play every game. Taylor - I've been playing my a$$ off then I'm hooked at half time. Greaves, I'm in, we keep a clean sheet, I'm out. Nunez, I score, start to influence games then I'm on the bench. Philogene in, Philogene bench, Clarkecin, Clarke bench. Never mind how I play, I'll be out and then back in so performance is largely irrelevant (maybe even how well I train too?). Azon - I get a start here or there but I'm never going to get a run. Hirst, my poor form doesn't matter as the manager trusts me and there's nobody to push me. Humphreys - will I ever get a chance? McAteer - jeez I've been poor but I keep getting starts every couple of games. Akpom - I've produced virtually nothing but with the manager's rotation I'll get a game soon enough. Young, I can't believe I've got another decent payday and I'm not even playing that much. Harry Clarke, does the manager know I'm still here?
So what is my motivation?

I have no doubt that the level of alternation causes issues. Players may be professional and keep it to themselves. But hard to get absolute confidence, buy in and comittment when you constantly feel hard done by.

I hear ya, and its easy to see it that way.

Bt we don't hear what McKenna says to the players and Im pretty certain he's talking them through things, reassuring them and it isn't like it might appear.

That said, I'm all for minimal changes wherever possible. I really don't think they need 5 or 6 changes every game. The best teams just don't do that.

My motivation is my promotion bonus and the possibility I might be a member of a Premier League squad and, if I am not, I will get a good contract at a top Championship club.

As supposed to I sit around in a mid-table Championship side taking my wage and can't get as good a contract next time mine is up for renewal.

It is a squad game and has been ever since McKenna came in. It worked twice before.

Clarke is injured isn't he? I am surprised Young hasn't played more but he has done well whenever he has played hasn't he? McAteer and Akpom put the effort in, just hasn't really worked for them.

I agree about Humphreys and am disappointed that he hasn't played more.

I am sure we will be looking to get someone to push Hirst (or play ahead of him) but we have been looking to fill that position (fairly unsuccessfully) ever since McKenna came. (And still got promoted twice without properly doing so.)

Right, we will be the most well rested mid table side in championship history at this rate lol

I have got no problem with him making changes at HT in a game were we were performing terribly though, I was actually encouraged he done that, as it's very unusual to try something different that early for KM.

He's done pretty well but Taylor's performances have been slightly overrated by some I think.

To add to the OP, IF we get promoted I get sold so that's another de-motivator.

This along with other things definitely a factor in our poor season so far.

The players probably understand that there is no 'out' or 'dropped' - there are simply starters and finishers and they're equally important. As is rest in an extraordinarily busy block of games.

I agree there are too many changes, especially in defence which I'd like to see more settled, but I understand why it's done for the further forward players. And McKenna's always done this, so I'm not sure why people are surprised by it now.

I don't think motivation's a problem, but I do think the gelling of the team is taking longer because of all the chopping and changing.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

They all know the deal when they arrive and they all know that football, far beyond Town, works like this nowadays. People are getting hysterical about the rotation. I'd question whether the quality recruited for certain parts of the squad is what it ought to be, but think the rotation thing is largely a red herring and people are being very dramatic.

It's a squad game nowadays, all would have been told about that when they joined.

You have no idea about the players motivation, you've essentially made it up to have a moan.

The creation of facts to enable a moan is becoming a real issue on here.

That was a different squad with different characters and crucially, leaders.

I don't think this squad is going anywhere. Might somehow bimble up through the playoffs but that's best case scenario. It would then need totally dismantling as we know loads of the squad are miles off the prem.

I know that was then, but it could be again..

Motivation? I would suggest being a professional is the motivation, just like it is for any of us who want to succeed at work.

As for your other statements - you have no idea how training goes during the week or conversations with players, therefore any assumptions are based on the playing mins you see once or twice a week rather than the work with the players everyday - so less than 10% of a players job.

They may understand that intellectually. But we are emotive creatures. The right characters are people who desperately want to play because they live doing so.

There is also the sharpness angle. Playing regular 90s gets you sharp. 30 here and there does not

How about looking at it from the other side and the manager telling the players that they will all get to play, regularly, and contribute to a team who are pushing for promotion? That basically every single game, almost all of them will get minutes?

It's too easy to only look at the "negative" part of rotation.

I have to respectfully disagree I am afraid - we are making too many changes and an abnormal amount of changes. By my reckoning, the below per game since 1st Sept (thought I would be fair as Sheff Utd was the 1st game after the window closed).

Portsmouth - 3
Bristol City - 6
Norwich - 6
Boro - 0
Charlton - 8
WBA - 8
QPR - 1
Watford - 3
Swansea - 6
Wrexham - 5
Hull - 6
Oxford - 4
Blackburn - 5

Not been back through 2023/24 but I'd be amazed if were chopping/changing it that much. The above cannot be conducive to building a fluid team, it just can't.

Six changes to a midweek team and then six back to the weekend team (broadly, I realise it isn't always that) seems like a fairly reasonable thing to do though (in pursuit of rotating for fresh legs).

I feel like you need to almost earn the right to be able to make that many changes though. If you can prove that you can do it and performances not be impacted then great but we haven't proven that. To be honest I am not sure we have even looked fresher than our opposition for it in many cases.

Yes and I think you need a dose of optimism to think we'll be better for it in the second half of the season too. One criticism is that McKenna doesn't know his best team but I think a fairer one is that our competitive advantage from parachute money should allow us to have two best teams for this level.

I am hopeful that most of those players are better able to understand the logic of rotation and KMs selections than most of the fanbase are.

If not then it's up to KM to communicate with them and help them stay motivated. We have no idea what those conversations are like.

It can eventually - i.e. when the whole squad works well whoever is swapped in and out - and then the bonus is that it works when other teams have to make enforced changes and lose their fluidity.

I know this is all self-evident really.

I look at is as a question of timing - we should be tuned up very nicely later in the season - but of course it might not come together at all. What's crucial to remember is that we're only 5 points off second, so we've got time to get it right.
