Getting stopped by security in shops 09:30 - Mar 11 with 23590 views | monytowbray | Yesterday the security guard in M&S followed me as I left the shop, blocked me leaving the door and asked me to open my bag. All I had in there was two packs of fake chicken (hardly a shoplifter's menu item) and he demanded to see a receipt I didn't have as I used self-service and never get one as waste of paper. In the end I snatched them out his hand, told him to go f*ck himself and stormed past him with my items. The payment is on my bank statement and they can check their CCTV/transations on the self checkout. Over reaction maybe and a bit rude, but I can't think for any reason the bloke decided to search me bar the fact I had come straight from the gym in Adidas trackies and a football training shirt and *could* have looked a bit like a chav. And that annoyed me. I literally walked in, went straight to the plant-based section, grabbed what I needed, went straight to the self-check out, paid and went to leave. I didn't linger around the booze or walk around looking shady. Makes you wonder what else they profile shoplifters on. Am I in good mind to complain? I thought they had to catch you red handed or have strong reasons to suspect you've nicked something to actually stop you? I know my reaction wasn't too savoury but honestly I'm not having some jobsworth jumped-up tw@t in a power trip job accusing me of something I've not done nor even suggested from my actions I may have done. Sorry bit of a rant. Part of me thought I should go in today in full smart work get up and complain to make a point but honestly CBA, but would take some free M&S food for the cr@p behaviour of their security.

Don't do Twitter or Instagram anymore. Twitter is a hive of toxicity and I've realised no one really cares what I had for dinner. WELL I GUESS THIS IS GROWING UP.

To be fair this is the exact sort of stupidity that entertains me. Buzzfeed or Vice clickbait story?

Getting stopped by security in shops on 10:12 - Mar 11 with 6350 views | ElephantintheRoom | Well let me educate you a bit... there is something called shoplifting and a lot of it goes on at those self-service tills. It his job to catch a few culprits and keep M&S prices a bit lower for all the other yuppies who like to think they are one up on waitrose. Being rude in such circumstances is basically either ignorant which I suggest you are -- or you have something to hide, which you say you do not. Either way maybe you now know what a receipt is for?

Getting stopped by security in shops on 10:13 - Mar 11 with 6341 views | clive_baker | Little ironic that you're angry at someone being judgemental of you, perhaps on the basis of what you were wearing, while concluding that he's a jobsworth jumped-up tw@t in a power trip job. It could be any number of reasons - mistaken identity perhaps? Could look similar to a know thief they've had in their previously? Personally it's more the manner in which he's asked and how the interaction has played out. If he was rude, aggressive, accusatory etc then yeah 100% complain as that's wrong. If he was just doing his job then perhaps suck it up. It's annoying and insulting to be asked but unfortunately there's a lot of tea leaves out there.

Some of us suffer from PTSD in confrontational scenarios and our reactions can be extreme. It's something even the Police are getting training to deal with. So really, who's the ignorant one here? SPOILER: It's you, like you are on most threads to be honest.

Perhaps if it were a case of those scenarios he should have approached it as such and told me why he was searching me? There's a way to handle things. Playing Billy Big Balls, stalking and side-eyeing me for 100 yards and then stepping in to block me leaving the store last minute plays into confrontational. As I said, he had no reason to stop me and the only thing I can think of is what I was wearing.

I think it does take a certain type to enjoy that kind of work. Not a one-size-fits-all statement but it seems those who are confrontational thrive in roles where they get to be confrontational and be paid for it.

As long as you know what a receipt is for some progress has been made. There is no excuse for being rude and ignorant - its just bad manners - but each to their own. Interesting that some of the keyboard warriors on here think you should complain to M&S because, heaven forbid, somebody was trying to help you and other customers by doing their job. This sense of entitlement, known as 'waitrose customer syndrome' is not much different from shoplifting as it is selfish people looking for something at other peoples' expense.

As I said, it's all about how he did it. If you felt uncomfortable with it or that he was OTT in his approach to it all then I would suggest you feed that back to M&S in a factual way and they can decide whether he's behaved in line with their expectations. I'm sure they'll be grateful to hear your feedback. From his perspective I guess it's hard to establish if anyone is worth stopping without trying to monitor their actions in the store. He might've thought he saw something, or as I said you might have a doppelganger who's a known shop lifter in the area. Could be any number of things, but you need to remember why he's employed there.

Getting stopped by security in shops on 10:24 - Mar 11 with 6241 views | Basuco | I had the same jobs worth type security challenge me at Tesco once 3 cases of beer paid at a staffed checkout, she just turned and walked away after I showed my receipt, no thank you, nothing just rudely blanked me and walk away. I always take a receipt now, just in case of a repeat.

There’s a certain irony here to Callis complaining about being accused of stealing something and feeling wronged by this injustice. I had assumed, apologies if I’m wrong, that he previously boasting that he was happy to skip paying train fares. Your comment seems to suggest my recollection is correct. I suppose stealing is okay as long as it’s from certain organisations that the thief feels deserves it?

M&S are the only shop that have ever stopped me. Exactly as you describe. I was walking out with a bottle of wine in my hand. I may have even had two, one in each hand. No bag. They asked to see the receipt, which I had. For this reason I always get a receipt at the self serve....no matter how small the purchase.
