Sending Kids Back to School - What have you done 10:39 - Jun 1 with 3123 viewsDecageBruce

Hi, I am interested in whether people have sent their children back to school today or not.

Both of my young boys where due to go back to childminder/preschool and primary school but we have decided to keep them away. We spoke to the school who contacted us and they appeared to be quite relieved due to the extra pressure the new guidelines was going to put on them.

My wife has been in seclusion for 10 weeks now and our thoughts are based on a few small factors. Firstly I will say that I am not 'scared' of the virus or the way that the schools will be treating it. I believe that possibly introducing it to schools may increase tolerances and assist immune systems against it.

However, our kids and I have not seen parents/Grandparents since the beginning of this lockdown (as others haven't) and the last thing that we want is for one of our kids and our household to have to be quarantined and set this possible meeting time back even further. A good friend of ours works at an old peoples home where 4 workers tested positive last week and she has to send her daughter in for her to be able to work. She is struggling with this knowing that potentially she could pick it up and pass it to her daughter before any positive test results are received. I appreciate that Gparents could visit in the garden from today but (the choice of the grandparents) is that they won't visit as they think it will make it harder to see the boys but not be able to hold/play/be natural with them.

It has been a long thought process for both of us and our children aren't missing out academically. I am revelling in the extra time with them at this age as I usually work away a lot and this has given us time that we wouldn't usually get.

I am genuinely interested in what other parents and grandparents are doing about school and seeing wider family under the new guideline

My eldest is 5 and youngest is 2, neither have gone back respectively to school or nursery.

Both myself and my wife work from home so it's not that hard to have them at home, plus we are saving £600 a month currently without paying nursery fees.

As my eldest is in reception we have made the decision to wait until September, however, how they handle all children coming back then is anyone's guess...

I would have sent mine back I think, but the school informed us that they dont have the capacity for the following reasons;

1. Some staff being off due to being high risk.
2. More demand from key workers for their kids.

So my eldest couldnt go back.

I would have sent him mainly so that he could at least see some friends, and be taught by a trained teacher. I have asked whether he can go back maybe 1-2 days a week if the capacity arises.

I haven't sent my kids back

We had a long chat about the whole situation but they didn't feel comfortable about going back to the classroom and preferred not to go

Mind you my kids are in their 20's and 30's so I guess its understandable

The schools up here are still only open to key workers children. There are no schools in my town open for reception, year 1, and year 6 as per government wishes.

A decision I fully support.

Ours are 12 and 9 and haven't gone back (schools still shut in Wales). They won't be going back until September by the looks of it, as they're not in the very restricted pool of students the Welsh Govt would like to see back in school before the summer holiday.

Scientific and political opinion in Wales is that it's still too early to open schools up further, and when they do they won't be able to properly prevent the spread of the disease unless there are very small numbers returning.

I'm happy about that, but realise we're lucky as we can work from home.

Not sent my 2 1/2 year old back to Nursery. Simply not safe yet to do so, as the SAGE scientists have said.

Plus my wife is recovering from chemo, so can’t introduce any extra risk back into the house

Seems fair. I remain baffled by the tunnel visioned insistence by the government that reception and year 1 return- when they are the least likely to be harmed educationally by being off, and the most likely to be unable to adhere to distancing rules.

Its bizarre- and I have yet to hear any explanation for it.

I haven't sent mine back to nursery as yet - I'm furloughed for another week and wife works 3 days so we will try and cover it between us for as long as we can.

My sister has one in reception and the other in year 3, hasn't sent the youngest back because she is at home with the other one anyway (she doesn't work as it is) and the school are continuing to set work on daily basis etc so no need to risk it at the moment.

Spoke to a friend on Friday, his boy is in reception but at his school they are only going back 3 days in every 10 so not much point anyway

Mine's year 2 and I would have sent him back given the choice. He's just not getting enough social interaction (made worse by my realisation over the weekend that he may be being exlucded by classmates and their families from zoom chats - heartbreaking. I blame myself as we as parents clearly haven't put the groundwork in with other families. Plus he and his mates had a masisve fallout just before lockdown).

I don't blame anyone for keeping their kids back right now, but for us the mental health benefits would have outweighed the risks.

The school sent us a letter on friday saying that they won't be going back for 'a few weeks yet' so realistically we're looking at september. I can only guess what state he's gonna be in by then.

Don't really think there is much point sending them back before September. Year 5 might have benefited a bit for those wanting to do the 11+ but in reality that can be taught at home.

As you say, seems little logic in sending back the youngest kids - seems entirely driven by the goal of trying to get people back to work and needing childcare for that to happen. Still makes little sense though - parents aren't going to leave any primary or even early years of secondary school kids at home alone.

My son has been going in regularly all through lockdown...

So has his wife as they look after key workers kids.

Teachers still getting flack though.

Who is giving teachers flack?

Though those at my daughters have seemingly had a pretty pleasant time of it for 10 weeks!

I agree,

I really thought that they would be concentrating on the older kids who are planning for exams etc in the next few years.

This has been the hard bit - the social side of it.

My wife is on a group with about 8-10 other mothers who tend to socialise with the kids etc (pre lock down). They have put a few Zoom calls together but my eldest loses interest quite quickly.

I have had some concerns over my eldests mental health in the last few weeks just with some things he has said and ways he has acted but it has just made me try harder to ensure that we spend the time wisely with plenty of interaction (camped in garden, building decking, playing in pool, bikes rides) with a little school work/learning in between and then allowing him to have his time.

Its tough on the kids for sure - at first, I think it made a nice change for them, but that's faded long since.

Interesting that your older boy isn't so interested in the zoom stuff and I agree with him -it's a poor second best to face to face chats - wise lad!

Nice work too on how you're handling the spare time together with your chaps.

Thanks,

It isn't easy for any of them for sure and my eldest (6) is mature with his vocabulary which makes us forget how young he really is and not matured in an emotional sense.

If anyone else has some cool ideas of things they have done to kill a few hours then I'd love to hear them.

Other things we have done it build an model V6 engine (Amazon I love you), made board games and watch space launches and dockings on Youtube.

My granddaughter is a teacher in Wokingham. She told me that she is getting sh!t loads of grief from irate parents via email because the kids aren't doing the work at home that she is setting them. Why don't the parents just tell them to get on with it, i asked her. Seems the parents replies are, "it's the teachers job, not mine".

No, one of our children is in year 6. Won't be going back until we deem it safe for him and my wife.

The school actually recommended to us not to send him back as they don't agree with opening on June 1st.

Im working from home which is fine and my wife is (was) self employed but is currently unable to work as she is shielding.

I do worry about them though. As someone said, at first they loved it and now the novelty has worn off big time.

As I reported before I am a Chair of Governors at a junior school, yesterday we extended the opening to year 6 and it was an overwhelming success. 85% of the year group attended, if my children were that age i would have sent them to school
