If this is the starting line up, then we must have the oldest fullbacks in English football?

Are all these " injuries " going to recover in time for the League start , if not we are in trouble .

What is exactly wrong with Jackson and Watkins ?

4 centre backs? I didn't realise Keane was back in charge.

I'm only counting three?

Surely not Drinan's senior debut for us?

You would hope Hawkins is at least getting 45 mins today. He needs game time especially with Norwood and Jackson not fit. Can't see Drinan starting too many league games for us wheras you would imagine Hawkins will do and probably against Wigan.

I actually don’t think that’s bad given injuries/availability options.

Presume a 4-3-3 rather than 4-2-3-1?

There's a surprise. It's a hugely uninspiring line up. Many of the same old boys that underwhelmed last season, particularly in areas where we have other options that deserve a go.

What has happened to Kane Vincent Young? Not another injury surely?

Yes injured.

That’s about as close as we could get to a full senior team with the injuries we have.

I obviously wish the lad well but it is utterly ridiculous that we have to start a season with Aaron Drinan up top.

Edit - just to add though, we do have a silly number of absentees (as ever) so I don't really see too much unreasonable here.

Not sure Sears works as the lone central striker in a 4-3-3

I’d go Edwards RB as he did ok there last year and we are relying on full backs getting up and down the pitch to provide width. Chambers in the middle.

Lankester or El Miz in the wide right role, and probably Judge out for one of the other CMs

Agree with all of this

Is that Chambers back at RB? Not sure I'd say that's progressive. Mind you, if we have nobody else who's fit ...

Talking of which, is Barry Cotter still on our books?

Need someone in that role that can actually make the ball stick. Drinan is a better bet for that than Sears.

Why has there not been proper scrutiny on our appalling injury and recovery from injury record? Surely some heads should roll and there should be a full inquiry. Our record is a joke.

I thought Edwards was absolutely dreadful defensively last season.

I would imagine this side has Tuesday in mind, which will be a much younger XI, before a blend of the 2 gets the season going against Wigan.

Today is merely an extension of pre season to be honest. We have so many fixtures in a short space of time that we really do need to be single minded about the league. Having said that, with Lambert’s days numbered he also needs to demonstrate results in all games.

Show me one post I've made where I've said anything of the sort. I've not made a single argument that suggests Chambers is as good as last week let alone historically. You're inventing stuff to suit your argument.

Is Wilson not match fit either? I’d pick him ahead of Nsiala. Didn’t Bishop and Dozzell play together and West Ham and do well? The latter should be there instead of Judge; why is he being rewarded with more game time after his abysmal attempts at football last season? Would have been tempted to go with a front three of Lankester, El Mizouni and Hawkins.

So that means the midweek line up might look something like: Cornell, Cotter, Kenlock, Wilson, Ndaba, Dozzell, Nolan, El Mizouni, Lankester, Dobra, Hawkins

Bearing in mind I have lost track of who is injured!

Because he is 35?

Woolfenden is not a youth. He has had 2 full seasons in senior football now, one of which was spent largely playing right back.

He is far more athletic and mobile than a 35 year old Chambers, It makes absolute sense to play him at right back today based on the players available.
[Post edited 5 Sep 2020 9:24]

How old is Ward? If we are basing this solely on age why has he not had the same scrutiny?

Edwards is far quicker than both why not play him there and ignore the fact he tackles like George Santos? Why does it suddenly make sense to play anybody out of position let alone the one player worth developing now Downes is off?

I assume Nsiala has come back and been given a fresh chance by Lambert or is seen as more willing to abide by his wishes than others.

Maybe it's a shop window exercise?

Judge is Lambert's big signing so he is going to give him the leeway to play himself into repaying that a bit. If you put Dozzell and Bishop in front of Toto and Woolf you may as well kick off with a goal or two already chalked up to Rovers.

Tuesday will make much more sense of today's line up I reckon.
