Probably between Cryuff and C.Ronaldo for me....

I'd edge towards Cryuff because of how important he has been to the game.

Interesting to see the next 2 big superstars in Haaaland and Mbappe are European, rather than South American

Cristiano by some distance in my lifetime.

Although Zidane's parents were Algerian he was born in Marseilles and had French nationality, and he shares the distinction of being the subject of a documentary film with Cryuff and Cristiano Ronaldo. I would also consider Luis Figo, Michel Platini and Kevin Beattie.

Iniesta has to be considered. The weight of his achievements alone make him a worthy candidate. Such a classy player.

I'd have to go with Ronaldo.... on 13:37 - Mar 24 with 2112 viewsBloots

....but then I genuinely struggle to think of anyone better than him ever, anywhere.

It's always difficult to compare footballers from different eras because the game has changed so much, so quickly.

Perhaps the best way to look at it is how much better a player is when compared to others from him era.

I think Messi & Ronaldo have been far, far superior than any other players over their careers and Ronaldo edges Messi for me.

In my lifetime it has to be Cristiano.
Henry was pretty great too. I'd consider Xavi probably the best midfielder.
I know he played full back but Ashley Cole was the only player I've ever thought was indisputably the best player in their position on the planet.

3) Gerd Muller - 730 (ish) goals in the same number of games (ish)

2) Cryuff - Just because he was a joy to watch

1) Zidane - Just gave the impression he had all the time in the world. Touch like nothing I've seen for a midfielder

Talking of other positions, I think the best team who I've seen would be something like this:
____________Neuer
Lahm___Ramos__Terry___Maldini
_______Keane____Xavi
Messi_______Zidane____C.Ronaldo
___________Ronaldo

Oh - including non Europeans there!

Agree. Ronaldo and Messi are incredible. Ronaldo wins for me on the basis he's done it at mutliple clubs.

Henry is probably my favourite player of all time (so far) but I accept on the basis of achievements Ronaldo is far superior.

Zidane was unplayable at times, van Basten I remember being incredible

Bergkamp...wow....Koeman, what a peg he had.

Iniesta, just a footballing brain, Figo...ran on clouds..

Completely agree with Cruyff. His impact on football as a whole is unrivalled. Ajax and Barcelona wouldn't be the institutions today without him and Michels (Barca and La Masia are a shadow of that at present).

Cristiano Ronaldo is a pure athletic freak and a phenomenal footballer (not on par with Messi for me though). Certainly one of the greats of modern times.

I think you can also make an argument for Iniesta and Lewandowski. I'd also highlight the likes of Maldini and Seedorf for remaining consistently at the top of the game for over a decade.

No doubt for me, seen most of the contenders live (from the mid-70's) and I've never seen anyone as consistently exceptional as Xavi.

By the way, why are people bringing Messi into the thread?
