It is with great sadness to have to inform you that Robin Sword passed away on May 1st.
Jeera enquired about Robin earlier today and I remember Footers messaged me about him recently as well. I hadn't heard from Robin since late March and he wasn't feeling so good so after Jeera posted earlier I emailed Robin and didn't get a reply. Fearing the worst I then emailed his wife Gillian and she just contacted me to tell me of the bad news.
Robin has had Leukaemia since I have known him which is only a few years but he seemed to be stable. I don't know much about Leukaemia and we never spoke about it too much so I didn't know the full prognosis.
Gillian informs me that the first chemo went well but then the cancer came back and there was nothing they could do.
I can't say I knew Robins whole life story as we only knew each other for a relatively short time and he used to pop and see me while I was at work in Norwich, usually sporting some snazzy headwear and often driving his BMW 3 wheel motorbike.
Robin would either talk about Ipswich Town, Socialism or oil or gas pipelines. Most times we met up the conversation would steer on to some or other pipeline he was tasked to organise, usually under a mile of snow or having to deal with corrupt or useless officials.
Anyway Robin, it was a pleasure to have known you and thoughts go out to Gillian and the family.
The funeral is tomorrow at Waveney Cremation 11.00.
It won't be a religious service and it will feature some Deep Purple and Pink Floyd.
Gillian has requested that I let her know what his TWTD friends say but I shall send her a link of course.
“Hello, I'm your MP. Actually I'm not. I'm your candidate. Gosh.”
Boris Johnson canvassing in Henley, 2005.
I have no claim to knowing him personally, but always found him respectful on the forum.
Always chatty, always civil and we shared the odd PM over the time he posted on here.
A couple of years ago when I was enquiring about something or other on the forum he took the time to get in touch and offer some advice. We chatted more from there and I'm glad to say I've kept the messages, which gave me a chance to revisit them earlier.
He never told me he was ill himself.
RIP Robin.
Sorry I didn't get the chance to say goodbye fella.
Edit: Thanks for making the effort to check up on him Lucan. Very decent of you.
I'm very sorry to hear that. Very sad news. I hadn't realised he was unwell until someone told me over the weekend. A long-time presence on the forum whose contributions will be very much missed.

I never met him in person, but when I started posting about anti-fracking on here, he was immediately helpful with a great deal of info & extremely useful advice. We continued to PM for several years on a whole heap of of other things as well, from Bad Backs via gardening to the EU (which, as with many other things, he was extremely knowledgeable about).
Always incredibly kind & friendly, he was also extremely prescient. Here's a quote from him from (I think) just before Trump was declared the 2016 Presidential Election winner:-
"People in the UK are easily brainwashed, mainly by political outriders".
Sad news that. Never met him in person but he always came across as a lovely guy on the forum. Don’t remember him ever having an issue with anyone in the many years he posted. I also happen to remember him going above and beyond a few years ago to give me some very specific legal advice about an old operation. He’d seen me mention something on a thread and so found all the latest information to PM me in those weeks after. Condolences to his family and friends.

Much the same, I never met him, but when I was setting up my company back in 2017, after we’d dissolved the partnership I’d been part of for 25 years, I’d just mentioned something about the first and against of VAT registration, and he PM’d me with some really helpful advice and we exchanged a few PMs after that where he went above and beyond what my initial comment on the board warranted. Besides that, was a very good interesting poster who brought much to the board.
Fred and I swapped PMs several times about industry Brexit and power supply amongst others. He was clearly an intelligent witty man. May he rest in peace.
In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
Posts from No9 were always ones I instantly respected before actually reading what was said. I really can't find any words, this is such a massive loss.
That's a very sad post to read, thankyou for letting us know.
Like a lot of people on here, I had exchanged the odd PM conversation with Robin over the years, normally on something related to energy. A sad loss, my condolences to Gillian and Robin's family and friends.
I'm really sad to hear that, we often had some great discussions in PMs around economics , business and especially the energy sector. I noticed he hadn't read my last message from s few months ago and was worried.
RIP Robin, you'll be missed.

I was dreading this news. Thank you for letting us know.
Robin and I had messaged two or three times a week for several months now (edit: actually, looking back, it was longer than that), discussing MM, PC, our shared industry and his illness. The last few messages went unread, which troubled me.
Although I never met him in person, our exchanges (especially in the dark winter months of lockdown) meant an awful lot. He seemed to be a lovely, kind man.
As others have said, he also clearly had a knack for retaining information about others and would often reference things I had posted historically about any struggles I had, or opinions on players. Even before our regular chats, he had reached out one or two times, for no reason other than to offer support and be a good human.
I'm terribly sorry for all those closer to him and send my sincere love and best wishes.
Thank you for the conversations Robin.

Although I didn't know Robin personally, the best tribute I can pay to him is that most of our interactions involved him helping either an individual or the wider community. He was always there for advice and a kind word and will be truly missed.
RIP, mate. Condolences to his friends and family at this very sad time.
