Prior to this summer and the positive direction we are going in I should add.
For me I have to say Emyr Huws, After the loan spell he was linked with several more "attractive" championship teams but came here and I thought wow on a long term deal what a coup.
How wrong I was hey!
Hope he can get his career re started at Colchester if he goes there.
I also remember getting quite excited when we signed Stuart Slater. Boy, he'd been ripping it up at Westham. Got here and seemed to forget how to play football.

Keanan Bennetts on loan. A tricky winger from the Bundesliga having also come through the Spurs youth teams? Yes please!
What we got was someone with a footballing body, but without the footballing brain.
Agreed. I was pretty pessimistic about our season ahead but when I heard he was coming I had a glimmer of hope for a couple of days that maybe, just maybe the man that liked to remind us he played for Dortmund had played a blinder.

Not sure if it was the last, but I was pretty excited about signing Michael Chopra. At 28 / 29 he really should've been in his prime, and just felt like he could be a real goal scorer that we were lacking. 2 goals on his debut on the opening day in a 3-0 win at Bristol City only added to that excitement, and the belief it might be our year.
Alas, he was a sh1t bag and a couple of weeks later we were losing 7-1 to Peterborough.
Think some of the excitement around him was that we got him for a quarter of the price Keane had tried to get him for a year previous. That probably should have been a warning sign looking back, but I don't think he was that bad for us (from a footballing perspective).
Scored some big goals, even during Mick's time. Clearly those two were unlikely to get on though.

Yeah that was the one that sprang to mind for me too. Certainly there have been plenty since that I’ve thought ‘yeah, good signing that’ but Chopra really did feel like a coup at the tiem
And as you rightly point out, how wrong I was
Highlighting crass stupidity since sometime around 2010

Marcus Stewart. I always thought we were going places when he signed and that he would be the difference between promotion and another season in the Nationwide League.
This. We knew we were in for a striker but the names mentioned were the likes of Mark Rivers and other average players. Then I remember a new thread saying "it's only bloody Marcus Stewart" and the board went mental....

That was 10 years ago today coincidentally.

Mariner for me. After him, Marcus Stewart then David Johnson 2.
The least exciting signing was Arnold Muhren. Weak, can’t tackle, an ill looking waste of space thought I. Saw his home debut (Liverpool or Man U) and we got hammered 3-0 confirming my view. Why did we sign this oddball??? Waste of a shirt….. got that right then 😃. The rest is history.

Got to be Marcus Stewart, prior to that the Flying Dutchmen, and before that the one and only Paul Mariner. Not been overly excited by anyone since then. I was brought up in the days when a great coach and staff brought great players through the ranks, sadly since Sir Bobby and GB that has happened less and less. While I hope that the current season is the success that we need, do I really get excited about signings from Accrington Stanley? I guess they are a means to an end.
