You say that, but we've been using all sorts of couriers this winter and believe it or not Hermes have been the most reliable, I'd say 99% delivered within 2 days.
In my experience all couriers are fine, until something goes wrong, then they're all sh*t. (Hermes probably have the worst customer service though tbf)

Hermes locally are ok ime, its Yodel and FedEx especially you have to watch for. Whilst on the road DPD and Amazon are a nightmare because they just focus purely on their sat navs
So I think its always about the people they employ really, not the company as a whole

I have Hermes deliveries….only once I have had a problem. Not with the delivery, but with the packaging it was sent in. Both my home address and c/o address have excellent courier delivery people. Luck of the draw I guess.

Yodel in my experience are far worse...current experience detailed below... this is not uncommon...
they've had a parcel containing a number of christmas presents at the local delivery office since Tuesday 14th... apparently it got loaded onto a van, where the driver suffered a short delay.... 8 days later, it is apparently still in the local delivery office, is expected to be delivered on Wednesday 15th December, and will also definitely be delivered today ( although its 3pm and I don't believe its been loaded onto a van yet).
their chat team are utterly useless, and lie as a matter of course ( maybe they're tories), and now a large proportion of my family are not going to receive xmas presents, which were ordered on December 9th. And people wonder why Amazon keep getting business.

*Exactly* the same experience as yours with large no. of items of tinned etc food for my dog from Paws - the 2 boxes have been sitting in Yodel depot without moving since 14th Dec., tracking shows delivery expected "Weds 15th Dec."! Assumed lost, had to cancel & get refund from Paws yesterday, re-ordered from Amazon, some of those replacements already arrived this afternoon.
Hermes are the pits, & beware, Amazon have been sub-contracting some things to them in the last 2 weeks, including a box of Christmas chocs I'd ordered, which were dumped into bottom of wheelie bin that the general public chucks their dogs' poo bags into as it's at top of drive a few feet from public road. Beyond disgusting.
Amazon 'Prime' not much better, just dump it anywhere. Am not a member but occasionally take up the free month, then cancel immediately so no ongoing payment next month.
DPD are superb, am very happy to give them a cash tip every Christmas, Royal Mail posties too.

I work for an online retailer so I am well aware of the reliability of many couriers.
Hermes drivers all use their own cars. So if you're sending something small they are usually very reliable. The issie only arises if you are sending something heavy or bulky. The reason delays occur is often they can't fit a bulky parcel into their car so they have to reject it when picking up their deliveries from the depot.
Yodel have vans but ure unexplicably terrible for seemingly no logical reason.
If you want reliability definitely go DPD or if you're feeling posh use UPS.

On that note I have to say the local delivery driver for this area always seems to be the same lass and she is super reliable.
She works so hard that girl and I often see her car about day and night.
I swear she doesn't stop until all her workload demands are met.
Edit: She delivers for Hermes. I don't know why I failed to mention that as though it was obvious.
Edit, edit: I think I accidentally made her sound like a call girl.
