Players you wish had made it at Town 18:01 - Jan 20 with 6119 viewsBlueandTruesince82

Don't think we've done this before.

Can players we signed or that came through the yoof set up who never did it despite our no doubt completely fair and reasonable expectations to the contrary
...

For me Luca Civelli, was super excited by him Big Jim was finding his feet as manager and Luca was exotic, South American, attacking, cost a million quid, all things that whet the appetite when a new signing is incoming.... Comparisons with Taricco (and Paz) would no doubt be made .... with this added Uruguayan flair we would surely PL bound once more, perhaps not that season but hive the lad 6 months to settle and the following season it was on.

Only for him to suffer tbe most horrific knee injury a month after his debut (a valentines day debut).

Gutted.

Was it Ward ( or grant ).who scored a hattrick on his debut. But then we didn't see the same player after that.

That’s not right.

He played in Holland before, not after Ipswich.

He went back to Australia after us.

Although he was in Cyprus for a bit since, he’s mainly been in aus.

But after 5 years in Holland with Utrecht, to give the reasons he did for not staying at Town of being homesick and not able to settle here (where it surely wouldn't have been too different from Holland in terms of climate and geography etc) did seem a bit odd.

Dyer - yes he was an England international six months after leaving and he also funded the 2-3 players that got us over the line the next season - but he was an Ipswich boy who made good despite a tough childhood (which we knew was tough at the time and we now know was even tougher). I would have loved him to have burst on the scene as an Ipswich player in the our first season back in the Premier League. Even if we'd had to sell him after a season - we would have got so much more than the 6 million we got for him.

I doubt we'd have got much more. Lampard moved for 11m from WHU to Chelsea in 2001.

Just a big fan of windmills.

Maybe a loan to Lincoln would've done him good. But we'll never know.

Sixto, awesome player. If only we could have afforded him.

Jet, was worth the admission fee alone on his handful of unplayable games. But was never going to track back and would go missing in other games. Seem to remember him being very unlucky and hitting the post and bar on many occasions. What a wasted talent

He made it, but I always wish for his sake and ours that Richard Wright had stuck around, even just for another season.

Bullard 100% counts. We had such high hopes after that loan spell.

Nigel Reo Coker is another, thought he'd be the MF General we needed but no.

There were a few under Jewel that should've gone much better. Lee Bowyer was another who I had relatively high hopes for, although was clearly approaching the end of his career.

The most glaring mistake was possibly Bobby Robson keeping Mitch D’Avray and releasing Richard Gough after giving a trial to two wannabe South Africans.

From a similar era you have that photo of Gazza and Pat Nevin as youth players hanging on Wark’s every word

‘Grundisburgh-born’ Jon Sammels was a big loss for those with long memories.

Feverish rumours that Robson was signing Tony Currie from Sheff U and coming back with Mick Hill was a tad disappointing

Pope would have solved a few recent goalkeeping problems

And lest we forget Ruud Gullit was deemed too lightweight

On the plus side - Ray Wilkins refused to sign - and Town got Arnold Muehren

And Billy Bingham rebuffed three job offers from a desperate John Cobbold - forcing him to employ Bobby Robson

Jack Lankester. Talented boy that the academy worked incredibly hard with, not only as a player but also in terms of improving his attitude.

Like many ITFC players during the cash starved Evan's era, recklessly thrown into the cut and thrust of the Championship when he was physically and not mentally ready.

The same can be said with Wickham, Emmanuel, Bowditch, Haynes, Bishop, Dozzell etc. The club has been wrong in the past to put often reckless physical and mental pressure on 17 and 18 year old's when they are simply not ready on a number of levels to represent a club the size of Ipswich. Hopefully we will see a more short term loan/earn your stripes in the U23's pathway into the first team squad from now on.

Should've been given time to develop in the academy, U23's and on short term loans, before progressing into the first squad when he was physically and mentally ready.
Reckless from ITFC to throw a 16 year old who had just had a growth spurt into the physicality of first team, Championship football. No wonder the guy's career has been ruined by injuries.
