Looks like Greenwood's career is done. (n/t) on 13:26 - Jan 30 with 1988 views | Wacko | I agree he should be sent to prison if found guilty, but I don't agree that he should never play football again. We as a society have to believe in rehabilitation, otherwise people will be branded one thing for life and then keep reoffending as they've got nothing left to lose

I dont think it is that simple. There are many walks of life where any sort of conviction will see you out of that career forever. Rehabilitation is a worthy thing, but I dont think that it should overcome all long term consequences.

I'm not sure I want any of my kids having role models that engage in this type of thing. Being a professional footballer is a privilege, not a right.

It depends on if he truly changes - hard to quantify I know. Reformed gang bangers in the US do a lot of good work keeping kids out of gangs and have become very powerful role models

Well precisely, there are careers he legally won't be able to do, but football isn't one of them.

But having worked with domestic violence victims for 10 years, it’s time society talked about helping and supporting the victim as the priority and main focal point, and not what’ll happen to the accused.

Whether he should or shouldn’t is irrelevant as a top club won’t ever touch him again after he gets convicted. If he’s lucky he might be able to forge a half decent career for himself in a different country. But overall he’s a 20 year old lad with potentially the footballing world at his feet and he’s pissed it away.

Looks like Greenwood's career is done. (n/t) on 12:42 - Jan 30 by tractordownsouth | The audio is worse than the photos - I don’t see how he can recover from it. This isn’t my viewpoint and I have no legal knowledge of note but I could see how someone would get away with the photos by claiming there’s a lack of evidence. The audio clip has his voice in so much harder to wriggle out of that. Another thing that strikes me about it is that the clip is from when he was 18. I struggle to comprehend how someone can become such an awful person at such a young age. |
Maybe a shot at rehabilitation and seriously contrite press conference? We have seen it before, Brian Moore is a prime example of someone who did manage to deal with similar issues? Mason Greenwood is worth a lot of money, maybe the vested interests will out? The audio is horrible as are the photos, so if it is him (and RN it all appears pretty daming he should be finished as a footballer. I'd be curious to know if, as suggested above, this has been know (or at least rumored) for some time, why his team mates haven't got hold of him and had a word?

I really dont think its a case of having a word in the type of situation people are discussing. Serious domestic violence situations (and I make no reference to specifics of the case under discussion) are situations where long term violence perpetrator programmes are required, along with an acknoeldgement and acceptance of the harm caused, the cuplability for it and so on. And even they are questionable in their efficacy. [Post edited 30 Jan 2022 13:54]

Sorry perhaps it wasn't clear, "have a word" is very much a Euphemism

Most likely they will do a deal behind the scenes, charges won't be pressed by her. They'll spin it to say they were role-playing and that they like "it" rough. Where do these players learn this is how to treat people in their relationships?

He did take the number 11 shirt which was previously occupied by Mr Ryan Giggs..

I really hate to say it and hope I'm wrong but I wonder if that's why she's broken it this way on social media. Why has she chosen to post it on social media and not gone to the police. Doesn't change what has allegedly happened to her which is utterly horrific and she has my full sympathy and hope she gets support from the relevant channels. But please press charges for any crimes that *may* have been committed and ensure justice is served rather than looking for a pay day.

The fact it came off Social media after a couple of hours would suggest she was asked to remove it by the Police. Interesting that this is already being spun into a 'woman looking for a pay day' rather than a victim of abuse.

Looks like Greenwood's career is done. (n/t) on 12:50 - Jan 30 by Cheltenham_Blue | Different time in 1996. Opinions on women's rights are far more prominent today (quite rightly). Lots of 'Lads Mags' still doing the rounds then too. I don't think Gazza was ever alleged to have tried to rape Sheryl either. I'm not saying the Gazza case wasn't shocking by the way, but if he had been playing and done it now, he'd be done in this country too. [Post edited 30 Jan 2022 12:50]

Wasn’t aware of the rape allegations. If true then there is no way back for him. Also very brave of the lady to speak out. Hopefully she gets justice and it’s not swept under the carpet by way of him being part of a powerful organisation.

Respectfully I think this betrays a misunderstanding of young people now. For them the court of social media is in many ways far worse for the attacker than our useless supine police force and judiciary.

Looks like Greenwood's career is done. (n/t) on 14:41 - Jan 30 with 1641 views | mutters | The thing is a lot of players do not set out to become roles models, they just want to play football. Then fame and fortune are thrust upon them and they just do not know how to deal with it all. There was a statistic from 10+ years ago that 80% of men that play professional football come from broken homes or are bought up in an innercity environment where male role models are just not around (from Robbie Fowlers autobiography, a really good read). To expect these men to suddenly know how to be role models is actually really hard. They need guidance from the clubs and find other sources. Some do, some don't and the impact can be horrendous. Whether this percentage is still true due to money and hence more people from other socioeconomic groups involved in the game I do not know.

She is a victim of abuse and it's horrific and despicable. I'm just asking a question - and there may be very good reason why she did it that way, which is nothing to do with looking for anything. Even if i don't agree it's the right way to report something she's still incredibly brave to come forward about this and i can't imagine how difficult that was. I just hope she hasn't jeopardized any potential prosecution.

It doesn’t matter if they are role models or not. They know the difference between right and wrong. It really is as simple as that for me and if he did what he’s been accused of there’s no excuse for it.

Looks like Greenwood's career is done. (n/t) on 15:11 - Jan 30 with 1516 views | LankHenners | The sport is not kind to women, and more pressingly victims of abuse. The authorities, media and fans will always try to hide such things away to avoid the awkwardness of mentioning it. Football's supposed to be fun, a release from the humdrum of everyday life; to mention anything that distracts from that idyll is to be a scold. Obviously certain legalities mean there has to be an extreme element of care when discussing such events and people but unfortunately 'football' closes ranks rather than make any apparent effort to be open and educate itself. At the Euros the BBC and ITV were mentioning how Rob Page had taken over from Ryan Giggs without a single word about why exactly that was. Just this season in the Prem Benjamin Mendy had been playing whilst allegations of rape and sexual assault had been held against him, only to finally be suspended by Man City once police had charged him, and there seems a very conscious effort not to mention the allegation held against Cristiano Ronaldo, for which Der Spiegel has a very thorough account of a supposed settlement case. There have been several examples over the years that have breached public consciousness but have never been treated with the reverence they deserved. I hesitate to mention one case which made big headlines due to the highly controversial technicality which allowed the player to have his prison sentence ended early as it's been covered a lot on here with the same excuses of 'footballers aren't saints' etc. wheeled out every time. I could go on about other instances of other types of abuse or extremely poor behaviour which 'football' doesn't deal with but don't want to take away from this case. The important thing is the woman in question is well supported first and foremost, then whatever happens to Greenwood is for the courts, however much faith anyone has of them finding a suitable decision, then it would be nice, for once, if 'football' stopped looking awkwardly at the floor and shuffling its feet and used the power it had to actually make an effort to make a difference.

the media / commentators are probably very wise not to opine on the cases you mention until court cases conclude. it's not necessarily hiding things away, rather it's not prejudicing court cases.
