Football OFF on 11:47 - Sep 9 by Vaughan8 | I think you're massively over reacting over postponing one football match. That is all. As I said, I thin k you care a lot more about this match being on than anything I do. |
But why postpone it? What is the point? Is everything else shutting down then? Restaurants? Cafes? Supermarkets? We can all pay our respects in our own way, absolutely no reason what so ever that it needs calling off. As for me and my weekend, I will end up on a lovely walk with my Wife and Kid somewhere, probably a bit better than you crying in to a hanky in your bedroom.

Football OFF on 11:42 - Sep 9 by Darth_Koont | Balls. I get it but I can’t help thinking this is more about being afraid of the potential backlash (and held personally responsible) if they didn’t do it. Football has probably been the worst at getting dragged into the growing poppy fascism of recent years so it isn’t much of a surprise. |
Not just the poppy appeal that football got dragged into

Football OFF on 11:43 - Sep 9 by ZXBlue | What purpose does postponement serve? And what harm does it cause? Weigh the two against one another. |
I have no issue with the postponements but I think equally had they not it could have very much turned into a celebration of her life and I feel like we may have seen lots of singing of the national anthem and other suitable songs and it could have been turned into something quite joyous as far as such things can be A rousing rendition of One Liz the 2nd, there's only 1 liz the 2nd would have been a perfectly British way to pay respect to the old girl. But it's difficult not postpone isn't it and I totally understand the decision to so.

However, I will state, it is massively unfair on people who have to travel etc and have booked trains/hotels etc. Hopefully they can get refunds.

We have 6 police at home games London had westham Millwall spurs Chelsea Cardiff in London last weekend with no issues… It’s not for policing reasons

I didn't say that. I said respect decisions. Have a word with the EFL for their reasoning.
Football OFF on 11:57 - Sep 9 with 1023 views | MattinLondon | Football is a safe place for many people and a release from the hard realities of life. The Queen, by all accounts was a sports fan who liked little fuss so I don’t see how this respects her life or memory.

Nobody is going to get a hotel refund or a train ticket refund because the Queen died. But try, by all means

I'd say trains are unlikely. Some hotels might switch it to a different dates (or some have a 24 cancellation etc).

Football OFF on 11:45 - Sep 9 by portmanking | Why does a match being played equate to disrespect? Utter bobbins. |
Indeed. I think it’s largely to keep immature and insecure people happy. The people who can’t seemingly do their own mourning in peaceful reflection but need to make it about them and their display. Including their horror at perceived displays of non-respect like playing a game of football. Personally, I feel sad for the Queen and her family and I liked her on a human level. And I’ve thought about that. But I’ll now take the opportunity to go and play frisbee golf on Saturday afternoon because that’s actually not a statement of anything. Apart from me getting out the house for some fresh air in order to threaten grey squirrels* with flying plastic blades. Might even be what Her Maj would have wanted ... *No animals are harmed. The squirrels are way too sharp even if someone was actively trying to hit them.

If the Government had initiated the decision then businesses may have been protected, which would mean refunds paid. As it was the PL and EFL, and they are acting against Government guidance, then no chance.

Have you followed the conversation? I know they won’t, and it’s pathetic the games been called off massively impacting those that have pre booked. Edit. Just seen EG message above [Post edited 9 Sep 2022 12:05]

Football OFF on 12:15 - Sep 9 with 845 views | OldFart71 | Although I would not consider in any way my self a Roayalist it is correct to show respect for a Monarch that has served for 70 years. But we are in 2022 and not late 1902 when I believe it was the passing of Queen Victoria. We are supposed to be living in a more modern age and as today has been taken over by events I do not see why sport should shut down for the weekend. People could have been respectful and a two minutes silence observed. Instead Her Majesty's subjects are expected to do without their usual shot of sport after a weeks hard work. There is plenty of time for respect Her Majesty who will lie in State for four days and after the funeral which according to reports is Monday 19th and then another 7 days of official mourning. Many still agree with having a Monarchy, but many don't therefore I feel they should modernise and cut out a lot of the protocol that was designed for an era past.

Agreed. Although just to reinforce again that this was a PL and EFL decision. These aren't protocols imposed by the monarchy (although yes, they do still need to modernise and I believe Charlie boy is in favour of slimming them down).

In the 21st century I don’t know why we’re having these discussions about a non democratic institution anyway.

“Hopefully they can get refunds.” Unfortunately not and from a personal point of view another Saturday game ‘lost’ that I likely won’t be able to make if it’s eventually played midweek, on top of the Derby game. More respect could have been shown at the game than postponing. I currently have an Aussie Rules game at the MCG on in the background while I’m working. There was a fully respected minutes silence followed by God Save the Queen/King played followed by their own national anthem. Why not here?
Football OFF on 12:40 - Sep 9 with 675 views | Churchman | Not the right decision for me. When events take place around Remembrance Sunday (thinking particularly of what the NFL do) it actually gives people an opportunity to reflect in a kind of communal way which is no bad thing. Just a view.

I agree on more rational grounds but don’t think it’s much to do with politics. There’s an even deeper identity issue here that’s also wrapped up in some saint-like reverence for the monarchy. I don’t personally agree with it or feel anything like it, but I get that many will feel very strongly and emotionally about this, and as if they’ve lost an actual family member. Royalty and the Queen in particular is very ingrained in a lot of people’s sense of themselves and the world around them. On a related note, I don’t imagine the reality of Charles as king will help prop up the system like the Queen did. But I think that discussion can easily wait until people have had the time to mourn and deal with the raw emotion and even real grief some are no doubt experiencing.
