Valletta, Malta. Old walled city, right on the coast, good climate, UNESCO World Heritage Centre, rest of the island is close enough to visit outside the city too if you want to.

Fez, not that close to coast but more then makes up for it with an overdose of culture

I did Venice for the first time last year and was blown away by it - couldn't recommend it more highly but guess everyone else has done that!

I wouldn't say it is quite a city break, but that time of year the weather will be lovely and temperate in Madeira; and it is a really interesting, easy to navigate place. Very cheap when out there as well to eat out and do bits and just a very relaxed place - may want a couple more days though so a long weekend - flight time from Glasgow is 4 hours 5 minutes though so depends how strict you are.

I think I'm going to look to try and go in Feb half term

I was there (Venice) in early October and had a similarly good experience.

Stayed in Mestre on the mainland to reduce costs, bit just a cheap, 10 minute ride on the train from Venice itself.

I know you're excluding Spain, but if you've never been to Seville it really is wonderful and would tick all boxes (except the 'not Spain' one).

Valencia is good for a few days break too. Quite compact and some stunning architecture, both old and new. Some of the modern stuff around the port is fantastic.

We were right in the heart of it by Rialto and hadn't paid a lot but had an amazing hotel.....tried to rebook and it is over double the price now so something clearly went wrong.

An absolutely stunning place though, just loved it - so unique

Istanbul.
Not been myself, but know a fair few people who have and they loved it there.

Seville, as has been mentioned. Close enough to also visit Cadiz and Jerez which are both great places too.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I've always been warned about Rome being a total tourist trap, so have put it off despite it having a huge historical pull.

Heard good things about Athens, and am probably leaning in that direction. There's a concentration of UNESCO world heritage sites in that part of the world and several are in a day trip's reach of the city.

Rome is great, loads to do and you don't have to spend wads of cash if you don't want to. Seeing the ruins lit up at night is a magical (and free) experience.

Florence.

(A shame you excluded Spain, because I would have said Barcelona).

Orkneys if you dress up warm. Or think the Western Isles get warm(ish) with the Gulf stream.

Loads of Celtic rocks and stuff.

Pack the bikes and enjoy.

Ha. She walked out of Hillsborough at halftime in September and went shopping. I wish I'd done the same after watching us concede thoise to late goals.

If Mrs G likes shopping, then how about Milan? Although not my cup of tea.

End of March you’ll still need to go fairly far south to get warm...you say you’ve done Spain to death but have you done Malaga...beautiful compact city like Barcelona without the crowds. Otherwise, nothing else to suggest other than what’s been said already

Seville - went there last April. Lovely and warm, lots of culture, and inexpensive. Great river trips.

I was going to suggest Florence, but Seville is a great shout

Thanks for all of the recommendations. Lisbon looks like a board favourite.

I was there on business about twenty years ago but didn't get to see much during daylight hours so may give it another go.

Lisbon over Beirut?

I think Ryanair might even fly there - at least they did at one point anyway.

Bath

He will also get the added benefit of seeing me there.

We stay in Bath for Cheltenham week. Only half an hour in and out by train. Beautiful place. Our gaf for the week last year was right in the beauty spots too. A pure delight. See you there glassers. I’ll get the brekky on.

Great shout. I adore Florence.

For an alternative, Amsterdam is fantastic. Easy to get to, lots to see, lovely people. Take a boat down the canals and whatever the weather, your cares and worries will all disappear.
