I did Venice for the first time last year and was blown away by it - couldn't recommend it more highly but guess everyone else has done that!
I wouldn't say it is quite a city break, but that time of year the weather will be lovely and temperate in Madeira; and it is a really interesting, easy to navigate place. Very cheap when out there as well to eat out and do bits and just a very relaxed place - may want a couple more days though so a long weekend - flight time from Glasgow is 4 hours 5 minutes though so depends how strict you are.

I know you're excluding Spain, but if you've never been to Seville it really is wonderful and would tick all boxes (except the 'not Spain' one). |
Valencia is good for a few days break too. Quite compact and some stunning architecture, both old and new. Some of the modern stuff around the port is fantastic. | | | |

We were right in the heart of it by Rialto and hadn't paid a lot but had an amazing hotel.....tried to rebook and it is over double the price now so something clearly went wrong.

I've always been warned about Rome being a total tourist trap, so have put it off despite it having a huge historical pull.
Heard good things about Athens, and am probably leaning in that direction. There's a concentration of UNESCO world heritage sites in that part of the world and several are in a day trip's reach of the city. |
Rome is great, loads to do and you don't have to spend wads of cash if you don't want to. Seeing the ruins lit up at night is a magical (and free) experience. | | | |
