What’s an ITFC opinion which you will defend with your life? 19:39 - Jun 13 with 9998 viewsTresBonne

Preferably controversial. Let’s have some fun.

I’ll go first - Jonathan Douglas wasn’t even that bad.

Douglas’s pointing might have been top notch if he’d tried laying bricks instead of wandering around on a football pitch.

Things he was good at.
Well he was clearly quite handy with the beard trimmer. Enough to impress Mark Ashton, I’m sure.

Things ‘Duggie’ wasn’t so good at:
Passing, shooting, scoring goals, tackling, heading, finding space, reading the game, running (no pace whatsoever), dead ball kicking, throw ins, getting around the pitch.

You spelt Natalie Sawyer wrongly.

Barnsley away for that 1-1 draw back in 2018 really was absolute limbs.

Everyone who was there agrees. And yet those who never went are sceptical.

We sold Dalian Atkinson way too early and far too cheaply*. When the 'NEW' Dalian arrived back for pre-season, bulked up and powerful, there was an air of excitement and anticipation that something was going to happen every time he got on the ball. He could've been immense for us had he stayed.

(*especially given that only a year later, Sheff weds made over £1m profit on selling him again)

You're absolutely right. Rumour at the time was that we turned down a much higher offer (£750k?) from Newcastle towards the end of the season, only to sell him to Wednesday at a knock-down price (£450k?) when the season had finished. The Chairman (John Kerr?) was asked why we didn't hold out for a higher price and he replied to the effect that Ron Atkinson (Wednesday's manager at the time) would have called his bluff. Sheer business incompetence, made all the worse for the fact that he then played a single season for a relegated side, after which Wednesday sold him to Real Sociedad (£1.9 million?)

The only positive outcome from this was that it started the process of replacing the old guard in the boardroom.

Arnold Murhen is the greatest player to play for Ipswich. Beattie is the second best.

Churchman urged the case for Mariner. Personally, although I would go for Beattie, I feel it's not really necessary to split hairs between Beattie, Mariner, Wark, Butcher , Hunter or Crawford as our greatest - all six (and more beside) better than any that lot up the road could put up. I couldn't support the case for Arnie purely based on the length of the achievements of those others.

I think Mills has to be added to your six. Club captain, over 700 appearances, over 40 for England and captained them. Great player.

George Burley too. Beneath the radar a little, Burley really was a fantastic full back. Brave, good in the tackle, quick, great positional sense and reader of the game, brilliant crosser of the ball.

We’ve been so lucky to have so many brilliant players in our history. I couldn’t argue against any of them. Especially Beattie. I was lucky enough to see him play many times and he was something else. Extraordinary player.

I’ve argued heavily against myself which is fun and peculiarly fair. But I still hold the view that Paul Mariner was the best player I ever saw play for us (can’t comment on the Championship side - that’s for those who saw them). He was actually a far better, imposing player than he looked on tv too.

OK this one is gonna need some defending

How about:

If we hadn't signed Pablo Counago then we wouldn't have been relegated from the Premiership?

1. Pablo scored no goals that season.

2. He broke Marcus Stewart's jaw in a training ground accident.

Getting in Marcus Bent in the summer would have made the difference, for both of those reasons.

I think you meant Paul Hogan. You know, the Aussie bloke with a big knife and a liking for crocodiles. Not sure he ever turned out for us, though he might have made a decent centre half.

As an aside, we did have a player called Danny Hegan. Winger in McGarry’s Second Division title side in 1968. A very good player who went on to Wolves and West Brom.

Joe Royle wasn't a footballing dinosaur, got us playing a super-attacking style and turned us round when we were on our knees. He was actually one of the top 5 managers we've had at this club.

Poor Joe got a lot of stick from a certain section of the fans. I loved him and yes we did play decent attacking football under Joe. With the exception of McK, best manager we have had in the post-Burley era.

David McGoldrick doesn't deserve the credit he gets from our fans.

Good player when he played but I firmly believe he wasn't injured most of the time and just simply couldn't be arsed to travel back and forth from Nottingham to play for a mid table side.

That the injuries to Adeyemi, Huws, Bishop and McGoldrick were the difference between us making the top 6 and enduring the unpleasant psychodrama of the second half of the 2017/18 season.
