If I were a 'big club' scout... 21:13 - Sep 9 with 8843 viewsLinners

...I'd be keeping a close eye on Liam Delap. He's got all the attributes of a top striker - presence, power, touch, speed and a little bit of nastiness. I think he's a little way off with finishing overall, but that's probably the easiest bit of all to coach.

Lovely jubbly.

Bold shout here… but I think he goes on to be Kanes replacement in the England team in a couple of years.

Once he's mastered the art of finishing certain chances he will be one of the most wanted strikers around.

His goal the other day was brilliant. However he's had a few chances in towns pre season games and saw it tonight in the England game where he's in on goal, only has to slot it home but couldn't quite do so..

Master those opportunities whilst being able to make goals out of his own runs and you've got a hell of a striker.

NGL, I read that as 'Keno's replacement', which adds a whole new context to this.

Yeah, he’ll just go back to city, effectively a loan with the buy back/first refusal thing.

It's not a loan if the price at which they can buy back is much higher than we paid though, is it?

There are a lot of things being said about this lad. I’d like to see a bit more before tipping for a return to Man City or full international honours. It’s not that big a leap given we decided he was worth ~£20m at 21 with the pedigree he has. We should be expecting a fully fledged player here, it’s nice for once because we should get to see the progress in front of our eyes.

with the buyback clause in place, a big club scout might be wasting their time (unless they're from city)

Delap has huge potential.

As others have said here, he has all the ingredients and once he gets coached on how to finish more regularly we will have one helluva centre forward on our hands.

Tremendous goal against Fulham, but he really should have scored that free header from the corner too.

Is finishing the easiest thing to coach?

I'm sure it can be coached, but I've heard the phrase 'natural finisher' used so many times. Isn't a case that the top, top goal-scorers have a natural ability to sniff and take their chance in an instant.
Not sure Delap has shown enough that he can be a 20 plus a season goal-scorer yet.
Not sure that's his priority, though, in a McKenna team.

I suppose it’s easier to coach finishing than it is to coach being taller!

It’s not a given he’ll turn super prolific though, agreed. I really like the look of him though. I liked the sound of the Greek bloke (one day I’ll learn his name), but the silver lining of missing out there is Delap gets a lot more game time.

Looked very very good last night. If he gets into double figures this season, he'll get called up to the seniors. With Toney gone, there is space for him.

Lewis Hall looked good as well. Feel Davis has this year to get noticed, or he'll lose his chance.

I am delighted that we have signed Omari, Szmodics and Clarke, but, so far, Delap is the one who, to me, has just looked "right" at this level the quickest.

The others have looked "decent" or "promising" against Manchester City and Liverpool, suggesting that when the new team clicks they will be fine against other Prem teams who aren't at the level of those two clubs.

Whereas, to me, Delap looked like one of the best 10 players on the pitch already.

He looks better than Hirst as a Centre Forward, to me, and the prospect of those two together, with Delap in the Jon Walters Right Forward role, winning headers against Left Backs, rather than Central Defenders, is very exciting indeed.

I think Hirst will win a lot more fouls in the Prem than he did in the Championship.
