From bbc gossip re Philips on 10:47 - Oct 25 by portmanking | I think that's where the question marks re. Phillips naturally appear. Surely we signed Phillips to give us running power alongside Morsy who, with the greatest respect to our Egyptian king, isn't blessed with breakneck acceleration or speed. Isn't it alarming that Taylor is outshining Phillips in the dynamism stakes? We're almost ten games in and I feel that's a reasonable sample size to judge Phillips to a decent degree. I'd argue he's had 1 really good game (Villa) and 1 above-average game (Fulham), with the rest being rank average to poor. |
He didn't play against Liverpool, Man City, or Southampton, so that is 5 league games. We'd hope that he will improve as the season goes on.

From bbc gossip re Philips on 11:23 - Oct 25 by tractorboy1978 | We need him to get up to speed fast and to be our best player pretty much every week. Sounds a lot of pressure but ultimately that is what we are paying £5m over the course of the season for. You expect a 28 year old that was starting in Euros/World Cup games a few years ago and is on the books of Man City to be outshining Sam Morsy. A long way to go and I think that article is tripe but we've not seen what we thought we were getting yet bar the Villa/Fulham games. |
Ultimately that gossip sounds like nonsense, but for the reasons you mentioned, a lot of people will believe the gossip.

Yes, but when you don't, what will other players be feeling? ....is there unrest in the squad?

From bbc gossip re Philips on 12:01 - Oct 25 by Exiled2Surrey | Is Taylor looking better though because he is coming on later in games? Against Everton he was brought on when Everton were really starting to drop off and let us have the ball, and in general the team as a whole was getting into more advanced positions. He hasn’t started, and it will be interesting to see what happens when he does, but for the moment I think that the comparison is a bit unfair. I do think that this is a long season, Phillips is still finding his feet, and the subs on Saturday were not so much about getting better players on, but were about getting players on that know each other - hence Chaplin, Taylor, Hirst and H Clarke on and J Clarke, Phillips, Delap and OShea off… |
I think that’s it. I get the impression Phillips is sitting deep on instructions. The back four haven’t settled yet. The passing out from the back hasn’t quite clicked yet so Morsy and Phillips both need to sit deeper to try and keep us in the game. When the back four find their groove we’ll see much more from Phillips, and Cajuste, I’m sure.

I also think opposition players know exactly what Phillips is about. Taylor is a bit more of an unknown quantity. Most town fans and possibly McKenna too don't yet know his best position or role. Most players he's facing aren't going to be too sure what to expect from him, which I think is useful at the moment.

Absolutely, which won't have been helping Phillips. Morsy I'm sure is biding his time and working out which game is worth taking the risk of a yellow. Trouble is, there's no standout game you wouldn't mind him missing in the next few. He might as well miss Spurs or United.

This is the thing isn't it. We don't know what instructions Phillips is given and he may well be in a different role to maybe how he previously played at Leeds. This can be Same for Jack Clarke and Smodics as well. An adjustment to what they are used to will take some time.

I did say this when he was announced but was shot down by pretty much every one else for not being ridiculously excited by his signing He wasn't just useless at West Ham because he was rusty or working with Moyes, there was also a lot of concerns about his attitude towards training. Obviously we'd all hope that the McKenna magic rubs off on him, but being in a losing side whilst whilst trying to build back a love for the game and your own confidence is always going to be tough. I'd love for him to come good, but just feels like it was the wrong signing at the wrong time for us

It's pointless picking a game to miss. He will only have uncommitted and poor games if he is trying to avoid yellows. He just needs to not do anything stupid, like kick away the ball and take his next yellow when it comes.

Maybe. Instinct says he won't want to miss Leicester though, so he'll get booked in that one on our way to the first win.

From bbc gossip re Philips on 14:02 - Oct 25 with 1536 views | Marshalls_Mullet | He wouldnt be here if he wasnt struggling for form. He'd made about 30 prem starts in 3 years. It was bound to take time, especially in a side that has hardly any Premier League experience and is still trying to find its way.

You haven't been proved right about anything yet. He's only played 5 games, coming back from injury, in a new team, and a team itself that is new to the Prem. He's not going to become 'England star Phillips' overnight - McKenna isn't an actual magician.

People have short memories on 14:54 - Oct 25 with 1413 views | unstableblue | Yes Phlllips has had two below par games against West Ham and Everton, but Morsy was poor in the latter as were most of the team. Prior to that he was really getting into his groove and was excellent against Villa getting one of the highest player ratings.

Really not saying I've been proved right. Just that I was very cautious about the signing at the time and that I've not seen much to suggest otherwise. It's obviously early days still but the concerns I had at the time are very much still there Absolutely not writing him off and really hope he comes good. We all know what he's capable of and to have a confident Philips who is fit and firing could be the difference between staying up or being relegated

I think most fans are more in hope than expectation with Phillips, He played 8 games last season, 4 the previous season and 12 the previous season. He's barely had any football in 3 years, I think it was a gamble bringing him in, can understand the reasons given his past, but I still think it's a huge punt in the grand scheme of things. Believe me, I would be over the moon if he got back to where he was 3-4 years ago, but I have my doubts.

I still wish we'd pushed the boat out for Ben Sheaf. Yes, he may have costed us £15m, but he was more of an investment - potential to impress at Prem level but an oven-ready top-level Championship player if we have to transition to the yo-yo club tag.
