I imagine that I'd strongly disagree with Morsy for his reasons for not doing so, but I do find the virtue signalling from big corporations / sports bodies rather patronising. If it's a grassroots movement that comes from the players or fans then fantastic, but I'm rather sceptical as to the intentions of these organisations pretending that they care about anything other than making money. |  | | |

I know I don’t agree with on many things but you are spot on with this.
This shouldn’t be about “personal beliefs” of an individual really but by Morsy choosing not to join in with a league wide initiative of supporting a marginalized group alongside captains of every other team he has made it about himself.
Hiding behind a religion which considers people of the same sex loving each other as a sin is cowardly and not befitting a leader. If you can’t lead “everyone” (statistically there is a good chance that someone within the playing staff is gay) then he shouldn’t be a captain. | | | |

I find it odd how people are saying he should just go along with it and ignore the set of beliefs which probably form the foundation of his life. We cannot just demand people get over themselves and follow the rest of us.

Fully agree with both of you. Perhaps he shouldn't be captain due to his religious beliefs. Men's football is light years behind women's football in being inclusive of LGBTQ+ players (I'm sure there are still some issues of course). |  | | |

The club have issued a statement that provides their view and a full stop. Why on earth you'd want to start threads (as you did last year as well) that potentially harm the club is beyond me.

I don't get why they just don't make a football is for all campaign. Isn't putting people into general groups part of the problem? We should just view everyone as humans. People don't have to agree with everyone's choices (we're all programmed differently) however as long as people aren't made to feel unwelcome that should be acceptable. There is no perfect world where everyone shares the same beliefs. The only types of people that shouldn't be welcome in football are those that are violent and abusive. | | | |

We have this same issue at the club where I volunteer. It has the pride flag on it's shirt, and idolises St Pauli - its a left wing punk club. But we've recently had an issue with a Muslim parent complaining about that badge. Given the club sits in a very Muslim area, whats it to do? (the big wigs answer is engagement - stand our ground, but don't minimise the concerns of some of the locals it's supposed to serve) |  |

Apologies I normally agree with more of what you say than not but it’s a bit rich digging out the OP for causing the club trouble when it’s Morsy that had actually done that by deciding he can’t support an inclusive initiative alongside every other captain in the league.
He is putting himself first and the club have had to issue a statement because of it. Surely that’s worthy of discussion? | | | |
