Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? 12:56 - Feb 5 with 12709 views | Illinoisblue | This should lighten the mood and make us forget about relegation woes. I’ve always had the age of 75 as a good target to aim for. And that any years beyond that would be a bonus. But I’m 52 now and 75 seems too close for comfort. So have revised target up to 80. Dad went early at 66 but mum is solid and healthy still, and her mum lasted until 92 so hopefully got those genes.

Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 13:00 - Feb 5 with 5720 views | gainsboroughblue | The only blood line I know of is my mum's. She died at 65 and her mum died at 55 and dad was 44. At 52 this year, I feel I could be in the winter of my life. Cheery stuff eh. I do think though that people generally stay younger longer these days and what is 50-60 now is nowhere near what it used to be, especially when I distinctly remember my Grandad being my age and was very much pipe, slippers, grey, looked what an 80 year old would look like now and only drank at the social club once a month.

Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 13:11 - Feb 5 with 5607 views | Freddies_Ears | Yep, and did my retirement planning around it. My dad died at 67 with a cocktail of cancers, starting with prostate at 61. His died at 65, similar cancer journey. My sister died at 57 of myeloma (that's one well worth avoiding btw), having previously had ovarian (phew, that's one I can't have). I am lucky, so far, having had the complete à la carte menu of skin cancers & multiple ops, currently as clear as I will ever be, but mindful that my dermatologist reckons I was lucky to make it to 55 (am currently staggering towards mid-60s). Mrs FE, meanwhile, is of better stock. Her mum made it to late 80s and her dad is still going strong as his 'Happy 100th' cards start to yellow with age...
Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 13:14 - Feb 5 with 5586 views | FBI | Yep. When I was a kid I worked out that I'd be 33 in the year 2000. I'm now 57, nearly 58 - the same age I remember my grandad being. Mind you, I still play and sing in a punk band and we're off again to Camden in March, so I'm going down fighting :-D

Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 13:16 - Feb 5 with 5538 views | WD19 | Current pension planning assumes anything north of 80 would be a bonus and/or I would be very poor (but grateful) if I survived that long..... Intention is to quit working life somewhere between 50-52 and make the most of it just in case I am not lucky.
Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 13:25 - Feb 5 with 5476 views | Reus30 | Pretty much all the time. Near death experience when I was in my teens, made me question how I am here non-stop for at least a decade. 20 years later another health scare so got serious about looking after myself if I want to see retirement. At this point, I do feel indestructible. Half tempted to just waltz into traffic just to test that theory. However, the saying 'three times a charm' might come back to haunt me. Grandparents - most of them passed early 60s but my maternal grandmother is still holding on well into her 80s. Parents are at retirement age and still doing ok so should be fine in that regard. Here's hoping I have a good innings but tomorrow is never guaranteed so meh.
Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 13:41 - Feb 5 with 5352 views | Westover | I'm hopefully 79 in June so I think about it quite a bit since I turned 70, my father died on my 25th birthday but my mum was 89 so hopefully I have a few years left 🤔🤞🤞

Wouldn't worry about I'm 74 next week not a lot you can do about. Would rather have been 18 in. 1969 than now [Post edited 5 Feb 17:52]

Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 14:24 - Feb 5 with 5123 views | LeBlue | Literally just reading this thread and I get a message that a lad I played football with (now in his early 50s) died last night, heart attack, no warnings, just gone. So in answer to the question, I don't think anyone knows how long they've got left.
Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 14:25 - Feb 5 with 5113 views | textbackup | When I worked shifts (night shifts mainly) I spent hours and hours each day thinking about death. Fcked up isn’t it. Maybe the time I had on hands, age, having kids and worrying I’d not be around for them… whatever it was, it was horrible. Always kept fit, do have a heart condition, but managed and in good nick. But me, I reckon I’m a 99 year older, fall short of 100 by a couple of months. [Post edited 5 Feb 14:27]

Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 15:13 - Feb 5 with 4878 views | BloomBlue | No male on my Father's side lived past 58 (as far as I can discover), admittedly some where killed in wars. So I adopted a different approach of 50 being a good target. Went beyond that years ago, so every day has been a party day now for many, many years.
Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 15:14 - Feb 5 with 4881 views | RobTheMonk | I never used to but having twins changed things. Six months coming up with no alcohol because I don't want my kids to remember Dad being out binge drinking and not being able to play with them because he's too hungover. I'm approaching late 30's now and it's scary how quickly time passes when you stop to think.
Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 16:06 - Feb 5 with 4707 views | TresBonne | Interesting stuff, death. I think about it often, scares the fck out of me tbh. I seem to disassociate plenty and think 'wow, I'm actually alive, I exist'...

Having kids definitely changes things. You start thinking “well, when they’re getting married and having kids I’ll be xx” and then working out how much you’ll be around to see the grandkids. For me, watching my mate decline and then succumb to MND was a real blow. Partly because of the brutal nature of that disease but also because he wasn’t much older than me and our kids were friends. Good reminder to try and be kind and do nice things and be present.

Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 16:18 - Feb 5 with 4600 views | Swailsey | Frequently. Everyone is different with this, and I don’t mean to make light of or seem flippant about death, but currently I’m aiming for 40 (I’m 36) and then will try and tackle the next 5 years etc. I again mean that in the most respectful way. Some great answers on this thread.

Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 16:24 - Feb 5 with 4551 views | J2BLUE | Not really. I think more about my nan and my parents. On a related note I do think about getting older and sometimes at work I sit there in my office and think this is absurd. There must be more to life than sitting here doing this. Then I always wonder what a caveman would think of the concept of customer service and wonder how the human race got to this point and what would be the worst thing that happened if I just closed my laptop and walked away. Do you ever think about how long you’ve got left? on 16:28 - Feb 5 with 4491 views | OldFart71 | Must admit I often think of the time I have left. You say the age of 75 is your target. I am 75 this year so my target is a bit higher. Obviously I have seen many former work colleagues some younger, some older die. One particular fella I hadn't seen for a couple of weeks so I enquired where he was. Was told he was away ill. Turned out he had a brain tumour and had died at 61 just a week or so later. He used to tell me about how good his pension would be when he retired. Any really lovely chap I worked with got motor neurone disease and died at 56 years of age. As for myself my overall health has deteriorated since a bit. I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2019 and went of a watch and wait program where they check your PSA every 6 months, late in 2023 it was deemed necessary to have treatment so I had 5 weeks of radiotherapy which was successful but I do believe the treatment had profound effects on myself as i have muscle wastage, stomach issues and shortage of breath. I cannot say the ages at which my parents died or what of as i was fostered at 11 months old. Then adopted at 13. The people who took me on, Mum and Dad died aged 50 and 86. Both sadly missed and whatever age I live to I will be eternally grateful to them both.

What sort of book? About a hero called Swailsey, a much loved member of a football forum who discovered true happiness at the age of 36 and nine tenths before living happily and healthily until the age of 92 and dying peacefully the day after watching Ipswich complete the treble at Wembley?
