Have to say, id be amazed if this is one we get done. Boro wont want to sell to a club in the same division, but who knows.
As a player, he is maybe the best in possession player in the division. His passing, all areas of it is top level stuff, premier league quality.
Very lightweight though. Gets brushed off the ball easily from the times I have watched him. Clearly one McKenna wants and fits the young, English, high ceiling type.
EDIT- Checked the numbers and he wins a lot of duels and tackles apparently. Good numbers in that area. This is why I am not a scout.

i don't know about it being stronger than last years pairings on paper.
Phillips recent international midfielder, Cajuste International squad member of course Morsy, who you would expect these 2 to have different attributes to him.
V's 2 lads, one of which has played in the Championship and and another in the top French league.
That's a sensible comment.
Plus we had the extra that the likes of Luongo and Morsy had from being paired together for a while.
IF Hackney comes through the door, him and Azor (i'm not using his surname yet) will need a little bit of time to hit the heights of the prior midfield duos.

The other thing if we really want the Mexican and they think we may go elsewhere it may get them to sell at the price we are prepared to pay. Just a thought.

Phillips achieved nothing in his time with us. Cajuste was easy on the eye, but 2 goal contributions all season? Morsy was decent but looked out of his depth in the second half of the season.
Matusiwa's underlying data craps all over Morsy's, make no bones about it. Hackney has the potential to be far more impactful for us with progressive passes/carries than Phillips or Cajuste.

I thought Phillips was ok for us, not bad, not good. Think the expectations of the player we were getting weren’t in line with the player we got but he’s done more than either of the potential new guys and Cajuste has played in Serie A as well. If we would have put these 2 new potential players in the prem last year would they have fared much better? I’m unsure to be honest.

This is all true but then there are intangibles nobody can ever predict. Who in their right mind could have thought two and a half years ago that Morsy and Luongo would form a midfield pair that steamroller the Championship? Not one person on the planet. Morsy was very interesting in what appears to have been his final presser – talking about the unseen stuff Luongo did, his timing and sheer intelligence, how those played to his own strengths. I'm not saying that we can't or won't replicate that in the year ahead but for me it's up in the air whoever we bring in.

I think the biggest thing is we have a very quick footed forward line. One of our weakest links last season and even at times in our promotion season ( When you think of the leeds games for example) our transition speed from the back to the front wasn't great and when you've got the likes of Clarke, Philogene, Ogbene, Burns, Hutch etc up the pitch you need your midfielders fully mobile to spray the ball around in different directions

This has been what has been intriguing me this summer - it was only when Mass and Morsy started games together that the team went into an 18 month overdrive. Farke claimed, when Leeds failed to go up, that if he had had both in his central midfield all season, Leeds would have been champions.
It's also been my primary issue with Taylor that he never gells with whoever he is playing alongside and that 'chemistry' superpower we had is AWOL.
Obviously getting a midfeld pairing that gells is the aim but this I imagine is about luck as much as anything else.
Napoleon Bonaparte is famously quoted as saying, "I'd rather have lucky generals than good ones." luckily for us McKenna is outstanding as a manager and he is also lucky (in terms of Morsy & Luongo)

Does this mean we've moved on from Ruiz? I only ask because I've been listening to Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass to get myself hyped up!
I dearly hope we're targeting three quality CM additions if Morsy's leaving, minimum. There are enough matches for three to start 30+ after all, even if keep strictly to the old formation and never push one further forward. That's likely more than enough for Cajuste's body, while SomethingBlue made a great point earlier about Ruiz having played lots already, what with the Mexican calendar being on a different schedule to ours.
Let's sign them all lol.
*I count Matusiwa as one of the 3 minimum.

While there are many reasons why I'd love Morsy to stay for one more season, one is that it feels hard to persuade three brand new broadly interchangable signings that they would get as much game time as they might want. With an existing player, particularly one whose influence is much wider than just his ability, it feels easier to persuade them that being 1st reserve (and the 15-20 starts + similar number of sub appearances that brings) is a good position to be in.
Similarly, if we achieve promotion, it again feels easier to bring in another top class player to replace Morsy and compete with two established CMs than having little wiggle room to bring in another "first choice" when there are already three that have been given that role this season.
It sounds a bit mad, but I'd almost like to have a clear idea of the players we would replace if we get promoted now - e.g. if we can go into this season knowing that we will likely replace (say) AAH, Burns, Morsy, Clarke and Walton with first XI players in each position, that feels quite nice? Maybe a bit to FM/Fifa for reality though.
It's a challenging balancing act, lets see if we can get it right.

I think as always in these situations I go back to, why would the club spend time making these sort of offers if the player isn't keen? We must surely - more than likely via an agent - had an indication that he's willing to talk to us should an offer be accepted?
Also the fact that (even if I take my Blue tinted specs off), we are a a hugely attractive club that to the wider footballing world, is heading continuously in the right direction.

Wow.
Noticeable how few of the many incisive passes he made actually led to goals - I made it two which was fewer than he converted himself by charging forward and shooting on his own account. We should emphasise to him that we have Szmodics

Wow.
Interesting video. He seems to beat people by drawing them close to him and then nicking it past them in innumerable ways. Great close control, but slows the game down a bit, and then opens up space by stepping around someone. Looks like he does good work closing down in defence too, and looks like he's got the engine to play a higher tempo attacking role too?
Not as exciting as Ruiz at first view to me, but then he's already performing in Championship conditions.

They have played one match in Mexico so far this season
Hayden Hackney then... on 19:02 - Jul 15 by itfcjoe
He’s played 43 matches so far in 2025
In retail terms we are currently in week 29 - I don’t really understand how he can be at 43 games already this calendar year.
My super comprehensive Wikipedia search suggests that the 24/25 season in Mexico gets cut into two - they play a load of games in 2024, then in 2025 they play 17 league games, 6 games in the end of season tournament. He also played 5 national team games and one game in the new season. I may be missing some but I can’t get to 43.
No question he has miles on the clock, and we need more than just him - but it would be amazing if he did join

Good points, though there's reason to be optimistic when we consider our collection of attacking players and how they all hopped on board (8 into 3 presently I think, 5 who signed last season). Three high quality new signings for two positions may represent light competition when compared to many clubs.
I would have loved to keep Morsy too.

According to Transfermarkt, he played is 17 + 6 = 23, and 6 Gold Cup matches. I make that 29 in 2025 (in the 24/25 season)
Then he played in the opening game of the 25/26 season at the weekend.
No different to the number of games for someone in the EFL, but with the addition of the internationals.

He's played 31 games in 2025 by my reckoning. Biggest disadvantage probably is that his proper break will have come in December 2024, compared to May/June 2025 for most of the Championship lads.
