Is Chaplin's time up? 14:42 - Jul 16 with 2041 viewsMercian

I am a big fan of his but looking at the players we are (or rumoured to be) interested in it seems that a 4-1-4-1 formation is the preferred formation. That would leave Chappers as the only pure central attacking midfielder in the squad so his opportunists would seem to be limited. He is still a very good Championship level player and would be fetch around £5 million in today's market. It would be sad if he left but may be the best option for both parties.

Need to get at least four or five more excellent players in before we can even think of another senior pro leaving.

I don't see anything from transfer rumours that suggests we will dramatically change the structure of team and McKenna tends to be subtle in this approach and tweaking our approach in and out of possession to suit opponent. Generally there will always be CMs though and don't see this changing.

I doubt we will look to offload Chappers as he would be effective though he may push for a move if he doesn't think he will play a lot. I think he will get a fair bit of game time but we do have numbers in his position. Broadhead seems more likely to move but I'd be equally if not more gutted at that.

Both would be very useful for the campaign ahead and definitely at the necessary level to push for starts.

Yes, that's what we need - more upheaval of the old guard in a single summer.

Please stop ..

Have we been linked with a single outright CAM all window? I haven't seen one. Has there been anyone linking Chappers away? No?

It wouldn't be the best option for both parties. If he is fit, he will play a part in every game this season.

Still has a role to play IMO. Plus he loves it, and gets it. We can't lose too many of those senior players in 1 window. Burgess & Morsy are standard setters off the pitch and excellent pros, I put Chaplin in the same bracket. He's a leader.

No... I cant take losing Sam and Conor in the same window.... its a mental health issue the Club should not be allowed to inflict on us!

Totally agree.

Him, Wes, Hirst, Woolfy and Davis will have a big role to play this season, just as much off it as on it.

Not at all - I think he is one of the key figures in the squad if Morsy does leave - may not influence as much on the pitch, and will get rotated more but I think a huge figure in the dressing room and training pitch.

We've lost (or are about to lose) too many personalities who were key to our success as it is.

We need to keep some form of stability and continuation and a huge rebuild was not required this summer.

Our squad is very good and has great personalities within it. Chaplin is hugely popular and more than good enough to play his part.

We need to add to the squad before we consider losing anybody else.

Yeah, would add O'Shea to that too, he's a proper leader despite being newer. I think it was Pep Guardiola who spoke about having 5 captains on the pitch, its something we've done really well under McKenna and with the coaching badges etc so many of the players have pursued. It was a big USP last time out in the Championship IMO, we didn't have the quality we have now and on paper had no right to finish above Leeds or Southampton, but we made up for it in spades in attitude, desire, togetherness, tactical nous.

Need to build that again within this group.

4-1-4-1 is the preferred formation?

Is it? There have you got this from? We've been playing 4-2-3-1 out of possession and 3-2-3-1-1 in possession forever.

I'm probably wrong here, but I felt some of our better performances came when Chaplin was on the pitch.

Wolves being the one that sticks out, but thought he did well against Bournemouth when scoring and in that run of games where we were doing well but just falling short around Nov/Dec.

He then got injured and we didn't see him again until the final few weeks.

Always looks sharp, proven at this level, good character, great finisher.

Him or Szmodics behind Hirst really appeals.

He loves it here so no,
He will be back to his best at championship level this season,
Only thought is I was told( not sure if true) it's the last year of his contract not sure if him or the club have an option,
If it's right and we got promoted is he premiership I'd say not,
So maybe the club may cash in,

I think that point shows our dilemma last season, in that Chaplin played an important role in some of our most fluent footballing performances and Brentford away was definitely another game where his touch and awareness were instrumental in our (nearly) good first half.

Against the more physical sides though, he looked lost and had far less influence on the games. His lack of physicality or pace leaving us light in midfield.

As SB and CB say above, we really can't be losing such an integral player at the moment even if he plays a lot less next season than in 23/24.

We like a left footer in that Right 10 role and as it stands, him and Hutchinson are the only two we have. Think it's far likelier that we're investigating getting another one in that position than letting one go.

What convinces you we are going to a 4-1-4-1 formation?

Don't we have Chaplin, Hutchinson and Szmodics all as CAM? Can Philogene play there too? Of course, if we sell Hutchinson we probably need to recruit 1 more but why would we be recruiting another while we have those 3?

Where do you get the idea we're planning on playing a 4141 formation?

I don't think McKenna has played that once in his 4 years here. Plus we have a squad full of attacking midfield options.

I love how the smallest guy in the box wins headers, and a sweet left foot. Love Chappers. My fave player of L1 promotion season. I hope he still has a role to play.

His time is far from up, but I do feel of the right offer came in for him then we wouldn’t stand in his way. A little like Morsy he has been an incredible servant, but he won’t be first choice for us next season and isn’t getting any younger.i don’t think we would sell out of necessity / not needing him, more out of doing what is right by him. Hopefully he decides to stay and fight for a place.

No, he is still a great player, his movement off the ball finding space is a joy to watch, he will be a key player in the first team this season.

One of our advantages in League One and the Championship in the consecutive promotions was to have a bench usually packed with attacking options. Try and keep out Chaplin, Burns and Edwards for an hour and then here come Hirst, Broadhead and Hutch. Good luck.

We will remain stacked with attackers I imagine. It's a long season.

Do yourself a favour and go back and watch the goals that Chaplin and for that matter Broady scored in the promotion season, i did recently, you forget just how good they were and how many great positions that they get into.

Him and Smodz in the 10 are going to rip it up
