| Kasey McAteer Fan Club 07:15 - Nov 26 with 2486 views | cookra | It is easy to be negative when a player has a high price tag over their head. However, i believe that he is a real asset. His work rate is fantastic down the right. Looking into stats he is stopping the left back from pushing up so highly and holding the ball up well when in possession, rarely losing it. Kasey McAteer’s start at Ipswich Town has been about laying solid foundations—showing adaptability, strong work ethic, and tactical discipline. While the attacking output will need to come, his integration into a competitive squad and positive mentality suggest he could become an important figure as Ipswich push for promotion. Can anyone recognize the positives he contributes, or are we simply following the chorus of criticism [Post edited 26 Nov 7:16]

Like a few others in the team, a goal to his name will not do him any harm at all. He’s going to be an important part of the squad and with a little more composure around the opposition penalty area or with his final pass, am sure he’ll come to quieten some of his critics.

After all it's not our money being spent, it's pretty meaningless in the grand scheme of things. Let's just all reset and think of him as a couple of million squad player to add grit and stamina and solidity down that side. Maybe a bit similar to a Conor Townsend type who was generally well received without being a world beater.
| Kasey McAteer Fan Club on 07:56 - Nov 26 with 1712 views | Herbivore | The transfer fee weighs heavy I think, people are judging him because of it and that's natural to some extent as it was a hefty old fee we paid for him. But that's not his fault, we chose to pay it. He works hard and he's a good athlete, for me I find him frustrating as he gets into good areas but then takes a heavy touch or falls over or hits a wild shot or tame cross. I don't know if it's confidence or he's lacking a bit technically but much like the team as a whole he looks like he's nearly very dangerous but is not quite getting there. If he can sharpen up his contributions on the ball he'll be a real asset but the difference when Egeli came on in terms of composure and quality on the ball was night and day. | |

At one stage in the second half last night he cut in from the right and did an absolute peach of a reverse pass forward to create an opening for Nunez. As others have said he kept Giles quiet as well. I really feel he has something to offer and wish people would get off his back.

To cherry pick a few stats (the % comparison is against other RWs in the league) from - https://www.fotmob.com/en-GB/players/1113915/kasey-mcateer ... - His pass accuracy is bottom 30% of the league - Dribble success in the the bottom 10% - Shots on target, bottom 50% - Successful crosses, bottom 50% Those are all vital parts of a wingers game and largely individual. He's just nowhere near the rest of the division which is really worrying. Hopefully he can turn the corner but I didn't come away from yesterday with any added evidence it's going to change.

yeah, this.... off the ball he works hard, and no doubt makes us a bit more secure, but we're completely toothless down that side when we attack, as his touch is currently awful. When Walle Egeli came on last night, the difference in transitioning up that side of the pitch was so much better ( and the important part of that, is that if we can transition well on that side, it opens up space for those quick switches to the left, which make space for Leif and Philo/Clarke). I've not really watched him live before, as don't get to that many games, and was hoping to be able to get behind him, but in an attacking sense, he really did struggle. That said, so did Clarke and Nunez for the first 60 minutes yesterday. Their ability to hold onto the ball, or even just make a simple pass was incredibly poor. As others have said, was a good win, in that we looked pretty comfortable for most of it, but the frustration comes with how many basic errors we make with the ball at present.

Problem is, he's wayward in front of goal - and that is very visible. I do wonder if he's trying too hard, snatching at chances. If one does go in, that may give confidence and settle him down. In every other aspect, McAteer seems to be doing exactly the job asked of him.

| Kasey McAteer Fan Club on 08:52 - Nov 26 with 1402 views | Garv | As a winger he'll always have the 'he's not there to defend' thing aimed at him, rightly so to an extent. It was a convenient opportunity for McKenna to praise his defensive exploits, he probably wouldn't have done if we'd lost. But he did some good things like the reverse pass to Nunez and his work rate is obviously useful in an attacking sense as well. Doesn't deserve the stick he's had, a lot of our attacking players have struggled for goals or assists, or both. Akpom, Szmodics, SWE, Azon...two goals and one assist between all of them I think. | |

This is pretty much the perfect summary. He seems like he is trying very hard to impose himself but not by doing the right things. In the first half yesterday, Hirst played a lovely flick round the corner for him and he looked the favourite to get there, only to not read it. Then he shoots over when he had the cut back on for both Hirst and Nunez. Then the header from Nunez's free kick that he should do much better from. He definitely has the physical attributes so maybe our thinking is that he can be coached into being the player KMAC wants. He does have a good track record with that after all!

This is one of the more puzzling parts of his game. 13 total shots taken, and just three on target with a combined xG of 0.09. So when they're on target, they are already of an incredibly poor shot quality and the better chances he's just belting wide. There are so many occasions as well. Last night jut blazed over in a poor shooting position, Wrexham he puts the best chance of the game wide, Swansea he skies that decent knock back from O'Shea. Thinking back to Wes in similar positions, you always at a minimum felt he was going to hit the target. It's been frustrating and I hope we see an improved version over the season. Can't help but feel KM might want someone in Jan to really make that spot their own.

My main gripe with him is that any good chance he gets seems to be blazed over the bar. Apart from that a solid enough contributor although expensive.
| Kasey McAteer Fan Club on 09:56 - Nov 26 with 1083 views | Stadiumofdark | Yes, better last night I thought. Not sure it helps that we get the ball to him so slowly, that he's always facing back down the pitch, waiting for it. Dont think he'll be a world beater, but I hope he's got the athleticism to drag us up the pitch. Overall though... he's a bit..... Ben Johnson! | | | |

I'd like to see more from him going forwards and hoping that we see some of that. [Post edited 26 Nov 11:04]

Attacking wise, I’ve seen nothing yet that says he’s as good as Wes used to be - and Wes got plenty of stick at times! Probably best to properly judge him at the end of the season.

Not disputing your stats, and agree that they need improving, but for balance his key defensive stats are very good, which I suspect is one of his objectives from KmK (and defensively we sure needed shoring up from early in the season) AND his chances created per 90 is near the top in the division.

Think most acknowledged what he did off the ball, it was on the ball which was the issue again and i noticed KM didn't have anything to add on that front about his performance either. At that level of football the minimum imo of any player should be being able to restrict a players attacking threat and follow directions, he did that so off course good work, but I dont agree with the op that he controlled the ball well etc. Think Egeli and the Akpom subs last night showed we are about to see a change and perhaps the return of wes soon. It'll then be interesting to see who gets the right hand nod.
