Embarrassed and a bit ashamed of the club today 19:47 - Mar 23 with 19883 viewsNutkins_Return

I'm sure I'll get a bit of 'i'm overreacting' downvotes but genuinely feel disgusted and embarrassed that reform our being hosted at our club. Personally don't think the club should be getting involved in anything with a political leaning to it from any party. But to host reform, and that cretinous toad Farage has really shocked me.
That's bad judgement and and Ashton has just sunk down massively in my estimation for allowing this.

Someone needs sacking for that lack of judgement. I hope Ashton didn't know about this (impossible) and apologises.

Gross.

They didn't host a meeting or an event, Reform booked a tour. Can see both angles on why it should or shouldn't have been allowed. A big song and dance would no doubt have been made had they refused to allow them to do so.

The club doesn’t tolerate racist fans, nor should they tolerate racist parties or organisations of any kind. Seems clear and obvious to me.

Not quite true. The club doesn't tolerate racist behaviour at the ground. They have no way of policing whether each individual fan has racist views or not. That way madness lies. I'm sure if Nige and co were planning a 'kick out the darkies' march at PR, they would have been told where to go too.

How many supporters go to the ground and take pictures to post alongside their political persuasion?

Don't see the big deal. Conference room, tours, these are available to anyone who wants to book them and pay the club for the service. It's not an endorsement or show of support from the club. Reform were not specifically invited. They are a legal organisation.

Yes, I'd say the same if The Muslim Brotherhood, Jehova's Witnesses or the Communist League of Britain were the ones taking a tour.

I'd also bet money that there's a significant minority of the fanbase that would have been equally annoyed if we had "Reform refused entry to Portman Road" headlines this morning. Club was right not to make it 'a thing' by refusing.

It would have been the right thing to say, the club refuses any use of the clubs name or facilities by ANY political party or organisation. THAT is the approach of every other league club , why not us ?

Bearing in mind you have to submit an enquiry to book a private tour then i really don't see how hard it would have been for the club to reject the enquiry

"we're busy that day"
"we don't host political parties for obvious reasons"
"Staff are unavailable to host a tour that day" etc etc

It's not like it was an function room booking as others have made out, nor something that you can just book online without the club knowing who is making the booking, and then have to cancel it at a later that (which would run the risk of Reform making a big deal out of it)

So i'm in the camp of being disappointed that the club have accepted the booking, presumably knowing exactly who they were hosting and that it would be all over X asap

That’s a good point and I take it, but ITFC do ban from the ground any fans who’ve been proved to have made publicly audible racist comments there, so maybe they should at least be monitoring any speeches made, images posted etc., including publicity pre and post-event.

The club come out of this looking really bad and as though they have been played by Reform and Farage.

It looks like an endorsement, even though it isn't and that's the issue if you are Ashton and our owners.

Reform could have booked any conference room in Ipswich, including where their actual rally was as it's a literal conference centre.

But they have purposefully chosen here and used the same language of some our previous tweets too. It's calculated and we look complicit.

That’s shocking, & you’d have thought Ashton and owners (were they even consulted?) would have been astute enough to anticipate such manipulative sh1thousery; therefore rejected the request along the ‘no bookings for any political parties’ line.

How about a separate space within TWtD for political threads, or just don't have them altogether.
Political threads always get the most traction - naturally as they divide opinion and peoples views are often strong. Sometimes I think that if a random person stumbled across this forum they'd take a while to realise it was a forum for a football club.

I don't think the club has the same options as a pub in that if they don't like your face they can say go away. If the booking is made in the correct manner the club could be open to all sorts of litigation for turning down a booking because they don't like them. As long as they aren't seen to be biased and say turn down Labour or the Greens I don't see a problem.
Do we want a democratic country or not.
Some would say that it has been destroyed already by allowing one to protest and say what they like whilst another is not allowed.

Maybe it is and it was all planned meticulously by the club and Reform.

So Ashton has the job of 'we were played' or 'we were involved'.

Given the shirt and Director Box photo it's looking to be the latter.

Pity Sami Morsy isn't still here; they could have given 'man of Das People' Nige a kickabout on the training pitch and Sam could have shown him how he dealt with that awkward heckler from Accrington back in '22. Repeatedly.

It looked bad yesterday but for the club to give that divisive, grifting cv nt a propaganda platform is an incredible error of judgement.

Makes all the stuff about diversity and inclusion ring very hollow.

I tried to ignore this but the club have made a massive feck up here. They've been totally played by Reform and its highly embarassing. So disappointing the club didn't think this through properly in the name of a few 100 quid.

It was always going to happen. If anyone at the club genuinely thought Farage and his crew were interested in a stadium tour of Portman Road for their own interests then, politely, they're as thick as shit.

It was always going to be used for their content, and the difference between this and traditional print is this will live online forever. Its absolutely ridiculous to let them in, simple as that. Regardless of your political persuasion its ridiculous but especially who it is and what they stand for.

As others have said it would've been easy enough to just say we don't have enough staff that day to accept the booking, they had a specific day in mind because they were in the area. Not a difficult one to fob off at all.
