Embarrassed and a bit ashamed of the club today 19:47 - Mar 23 with 18844 viewsNutkins_Return

I'm sure I'll get a bit of 'i'm overreacting' downvotes but genuinely feel disgusted and embarrassed that reform our being hosted at our club. Personally don't think the club should be getting involved in anything with a political leaning to it from any party. But to host reform, and that cretinous toad Farage has really shocked me.
That's bad judgement and and Ashton has just sunk down massively in my estimation for allowing this.

Someone needs sacking for that lack of judgement. I hope Ashton didn't know about this (impossible) and apologises.

Gross.

Farage with his name on the back of my club's shirt. An individual who told his Jewish contemporaries that Hitler was right. Disgust doesn't even come close to describing my feelings.

I cant remember a time I was ever this angry at the club. What an utterly stupid thing to allow to happen.

Disgusting.

This request comes up quite regularly when there are political discussions.

I think the following arguments represent the general consensus around here:

*Politics affects everything. You can't pretend it doesn't exist.

*Most contributors of this board are capable of a healthy and reasonable debate. I think the the threads we've seen on recent matters demonstrate this.

*When people cross the line, Phil is pretty effective at sorting it out fast, deleting inappropriate posts, and banning offenders.

*The "football vs general" filters are there for a reason and work pretty well as is. We don't need further fracturing of the forum structure.

*You are free to ignore threads you do not want to participate in.

Worth noting that this thread is an explicitly football and club related one anyway!

I am utterly ashamed of the club for allowing this to happen. Politics of division has no place in football. The club needs to come out in opposition of Reform and their bigotry or risk being forever being tarred by them.

I will not just forgive and forget this, the club has a lot of work to do to repair the damage caused and make it up to the fans. A half hearted response/statement isn't going to cut it.

Disagree, it's not just one to let die without a thought, Ashton needs to know how disgusting it is that he's allowed the club to part of the reform tour.

Probably already mentioned but can only assume this is Ashton and co endorsing reform. Let their own personal egos and political views become associated now with the club as a whole.

Such a devastatingly bad PR move.

The club doesn’t tolerate racist fans, nor should they tolerate racist parties or organisations of any kind. Seems clear and obvious to me.

I think that's fair enough, but equally if they had cancelled the booking, which I believe wasn't in the name 'N Farage', once they were aware who it was, a significant song and dance would no doubt have been made about it. I think the club would also have seen banning them in that manner as a political act when representatives of other parties have been on tours. Equally, Reform is very much contrary to the values of inclusiveness the club promotes through its involvement in things like Rainbow Tractors and its refuge football initiative.

I'm a bit surprised people are BBC-ing this by saying they'd be "equally annoyed if it were the greens or labour" etc.

I wouldn't. I am far more annoyed that it's Farage.

I disagree. By being more annoyed at one party or person over another is bring personal opinion into it. You cannot go down the road of saying ‘well we quite like the Tories or labour so we will let them use the conference room, but Corbyn and Farage can do one’. That for me is wrong.

The issue is whether a relatively high profile organisation like a football club should be used in any way by a politician or party of any flavour. My answer is absolutely not.

This has nothing to do with my feelings toward Reform which I’ve made perfectly clear.

Edit: I see Phil’s post says ‘when representatives of other parties have been on tours.’. The simple solution is for the club to say from 26/27 political parties are not welcome. If a person buys a ticket to a game, fine.

And yet we have them with multiple Farage shirts hanging for a photoshoot in the dressing room.

That doesn't happen by stealth. Apart from anything else we must have printed and sold / supplied the damned things! I want to know from Ashton whether these were supplied for free or paid for.

Probably won’t happen, but I do think it’s an ‘error of judgment’ of sufficient magnitude to be the trigger for resignation, or even sacking (the latter maybe in the guise of ‘time to move on’ or ‘by mutual agreement’ terms).

I wonder what the owners will make of it …

I say Ashton out.

Hosting Reform goes against those very initiatives. They could quite easily have said sorry we don’t allow political visits or embargoed them posting anything about it. I absolutely do not buy the idea they had no choice but to allow.

The big question is where the owners stand in US politics. If they are Trumpists, then Farage is Donny -lite and would presumably fit nicely.

Shame on the club for allowing this to happen - it’s irrelevant if the club had “official involvement” or not, they could have easily told him to foxtrot oscar, when he arrived on the day.

Phil it's all bullux though

The tours take place with player shirts up in the dressing room, sure they've booked a tour, that doesn't give you automatic rights to take down things in a dressing room and put your own stuff up.

Likewise, the club are well within their rights to ensure any club related logo's, sponsors etc are not used for social media photos. The club badge is copyrighted as a prime example.

This idea the club had no choice is just a load of nonsense. There was a simple choice. Tell the bloke he isn't coming in to do a photo shoot.

I do have some sympathy with the club. They would have been between a rock and a hard place for those reasons you mention. I can imagine the noise had we rejected them would have been a lot louder and probably splashed all over mainstream news.

But then we should also be prepared to pay more than lip service to our principles. There’s no easy way out and we’re mostly unlucky they chose us.

Ashton out because it’s a political party or because it’s Farage?

If it is the former, the club has done it before. If it’s the latter that is putting the personal into it which doesn’t seem right.

What I would do as owners is make it clear to Ashton, who is accountable come what may, that it must not happen again with any political party or individual.

Yes because its Farage- because of what Farage stands for (and openly says!)

Stop pretending that hard right politicans with bigotted views and policies are the same as other parties.

When booking the private tours, you have to include a business name, not only that but you send an enquiry., Not an automatic booking.

So are we to lead to believe that at no point the club knew that it was reform making the booking..

Did the club supply the shirts?

Surely someone from his team could have just gone online and ordered multiple shirts with Farage on?

Well

You are based on the terms of the tour, only allowed a very small bag when entering. So they certainly didn't walk in with a load of shirts.... they were already there...............

There's a difference between a company booking a room hire and using it, compared to what's happening here. The club has effectively allowed themselves to be a pawn in Farage's game, and they're going to milk it for all it's worth.

A complete misjudgement from the club and frankly, just dumb to not have a general policy around not getting involved with political parties etc.

So disappointed.

They have a right to stand in local and national elections and do. Just the same as any other group or individual. Their opportunities should be the same and views should be aired with everyone else’s - unless they break the law. That’s what democracy is. The same rule for me applies to all.

We all know what Farage and his crowd are and however distasteful, they still have the right to air time, freedom of speech and all the rest of it, not least because that gives them the opportunity to dig their own grave or buried by the sane.

The alternative is suppression which is exactly what authoritarians/dictators like Putin does and Trump is now trying to do. I can never agree to that.

This is about the policy of a football club as to whether it allows itself to be used by politicians for any purpose whatsoever. My answer is no whether it’s Farage, Sir Kier or Margaret Thatcher’s urn. The world is wicked enough and the wickedness of politicians, all of which I detest, should be nowhere near my football club.
