We’ve got to lose sometime so the last 16 is as good a time as any. Gives the players a few extra days to rest before next season. Better that way, so they don’t burn out.
Blimey, I can't believe that was 20 years ago, I was still of an age where I could have been playing professional football when that happened.
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.
To be fair you couldn’t pick a better half for the knockout stages.
(R16) Germany (QF) Sweden or Ukraine (SF) Wales, Denmark, Holland or Czech Rep
Going to be tough regardless but we’ve avoided so many tops sides.
exactly, that worked out quite well in the end for England, the so called "easier" route by finishing 2nd in the group would now have meant Spain(R16), then most likely France (QF) with Italy,Belgium or Portugal (SF) probably with Germany in the Final :D
but now only one game away from Wembley on the route to the final, so youd hope England would feel confident about progressing from that...anyone taking bets on penalties ;)

Would've been better, but I agree, whoever wins on Tuesday is going to have a great chance of progressing far in the tournament. Bring on the Germans, they won't be all that excited about a trip to Wembley, and we're due a performance.
Amazing night. On paper they were the complete side and should have achieved a lot more. Pretty much every part of the pitch had someone who was absolute top draw and all in the prime of their careers. A decent keeper, top CBs, top full backs, world class Scholes, top box to box midfielder in Gerard, top/world class Beckham, a genuine goalscorer and decent target man.

Yeah that defence of G. Neville, Ferdinand, Campbell, Cole was outrageous. I don't think I saw Ashley Cole play anything other than incredibly for England. 100+ caps and can't remember a bad one.

The first time I saw Ashley Cole play was for Palace at Portman Road towards the end of the 99/2000 season. We won 1-0 but he was fantastic. England have never had a better player in that position.

Played attacking midfield in that didn’t he? He was indeed brilliant, wasn’t particularly surprised to see him playing in the PL not long after but was a bit surprised to see him at LB!
Highlighting crass stupidity since sometime around 2010
