Broadhead and Edwards.

I think Woolfie is going to have a season that ends up with him being linked all over the place for a big money move come this time next year.

I predict that Fridge and Camara are going to become regular starters as the season progresses, and will have good seasons. Massively rooting for Edwards too.

Was it Mick who said 'players get better in the minds of the fans when they're sat on the bench' or similar?

Woolfenden.

Yes and he had a meltdown at Burton following bench warming Celina and his winner from the free-kick.

Even for you Frimmers that’s not a bad shout. Always had a feeling we’re still to see far more from Edwards and somehow feel he may have more of an impact from the bench in the championship than L1. Think he may win us a lot of points next season.

I'm really intrigued to see what he's like after pre season.

Even this season he looked a different, more all rounded player than the one who joined. Passing was spot on. Assisted. Got crosses in, but he also looked calm when going on a direct run and it wasn't full of stepovers and tricks flicks etc and running into players.

Really looking forward to seeing him.

Edwards has been geat to watch, fantastic at dribbling. But if he wants more game time, and doesn't want to be left behind, he needs to have more impact. 1 assist in 769 minutes, mainly against tired defences that he could often walk through at will.

Touche! Thing is, you've picked 3 players that barely played last year to have great seasons a level above. The two that did play were very average for league one. I'll give edmundson the benefit of the doubt because i'm currently playing through an ankle injury and it's very restrictive. Camara was obviously signed for big money for a reason but it's been so long since he played that it's more likely he does a KVY and never gets back to his level (which until now has been top end league 1). As for edwards, if we was going to rip the championship a new one, he'd have at least got in the team in the division below.

Sorry to be boring but it's the players that were good last year that stand the best chance. Woolfenden, davis, morsy, chaplin, broadhead.

Can't see any of the current fringe players stepping up to be key men next season in all honesty. Edwards will barely start I expect, he's not going to dislodge Broadhead or Chaplin.

Think he has all the attributes to really do well in the Championship. If we can keep him fit all season he's going to be a big player for us.

Only reason i went for woolfenden over broadhead or chaplin was because i figure we'll be busier at the back this year.

Think the raw stats for Edwards in the league are a bit hard on him in terms of impact. There's several other occasions where he's the main force in creating a goal, but it doesn't count as an assist (deflected cross v. Portsmouth, Freddie's 2nd against Charlton, wins pen at Morecambe). Add all that up and it's something in the order of a goal contribution every 110 minutes in the league, which is productive.

You look at 1 assist in 769 minutes and you think this lad has flattered to deceive and done nothing to affect the game, but he was more impactful than that implies.

Conversely I was thinking we're going to see players like Burns challenged a lot next season. Wing play is generally much stronger in the championship with less goals usually coming from working into the box than L1.

I've made a pact not to talk much more about Burns.

But. I don't see him being first choice next season personally.

Big season for the likes of Davis, Clarke Woolfy and Walton, imo. We will most likely face sides that will attack us more, especially away from home. Davis had a much more defensive role in some of our bigger away fixtures on our run in last season. So may not shine as much in an attacking sense, next season....?
Think Clarke's athleticism will bode well for him to be one of our stand outs next season... Broadhead and Morsy look like they'll easily cope with the step up.
Nothing would surprise me with Edwards, but I don't think he's going to turn into Jack Grealish, overnight. Can see him playing an impact role, again. I wouldn't be shocked, either, if he found himself a few notches down the pecking order , depending on our window.

Define great?

Our players outperformed last season as part of a great team. A number of them hit average match ratings over 7.

I don’t remember an average performer for us reaching over 7 across 46 league games in the champ for some time? No idea who that would have been, Bart perhaps.

It could be really hard for any one of them to have a great season, but I will go with Walton, Clark, Morsy and Broadhead as standout performers.

I will be pleased if there are 8-14 that consistently perform at the level, we then have a shout at doing good things.

Walton

He had a number of point-winning interventions last season but generally it was more about whether our attack was firing that made the difference in games and the defensive side was less important.

In the Championship we’re going to be tested defensively far more but I think he’ll be up to that.

The bigger question perhaps is which players are going to step up to these greater demands and can cope with having their weaknesses tested more than just showing their strengths, which seemed to be the dominant theme in League One.

A case in point is someone like Davis who can be suspect defensively in a way that Knudsen for example never was. Of course, Knudsen didn’t have anything like Davis’s delivery and threat going forward but we may need Davis to up his defensive game and/or we put more defensive emphasis on the players around him.

It’s going to be a fascinating season to see how the players (and McKenna with his tactics and selections) adjust to the step up and the likely change in the balance of games. Getting our own balance right will be key and perhaps we’ll be able to read into how we’ll do that through our signings over the summer.

Just to add, I think the core team and subs that finished last season would probably manage mid-table without too much difficulty, so this is more of a luxury “problem” to see how we reach the next level in a higher and seemingly much tighter league. Can’t wait!

If you look at the players who made serious improvements to their game under KMcK last year, you'd probably have Burgess and Edwards as leaders. There are other players who were 'better' or more consistent and in similar positions, but those two were real beneficiaries of KMcK's coaching team.

Edwards has still got some more improvement in him, and I think you're right to see him as a potential star next season. I'd agree with all the other leading contenders on here like Woolfy, Davis and particularly Broadhead from a higher 'starting position' than Edwards. Also potentially Camara, with the caveat that I'm not quite sure how he fits in, but I am quite sure that KMcK will know.

I had somehow forgotten Clarke of course, whose rough edges will come off to leave a machine down the right flank capable of ripping through panicking budgies in a cloud of yellow feathers, bird sh!t and spilt Trill.
