Am I being cynical or do we now know why the Hancock story leaked? 09:36 - Jul 4 with 2445 viewspointofblue

For his many faults Hancock was very much putting the Covid situation first and supported maintaining legislation around masks and distancing. The story breaks, he resigns and, lo and behold, is not replaced by someone with the same mindset but by a minister who wants to re-open the country fully as soon as possible.

Almost as if it was planned...

TBH, there weren't that many options among senior Conservatives who didn't have the "open as soon as possible" attitude.

Rumour has it, that Gove was first choice but he had very similar personal issues to Hancock about to break.

Javid is simply a yes man.

Oooo, a conspiracy theory! Possibly, but if Johnson wanted javid in, why didn’t he just sack Hancock as soon as the story broke? I get the feeling that if Hancock hadn’t resigned, Johnson wouldn’t have sacked him, so no change. And it seems that Johnson is still making noises about some restrictions being in place (eg masks on public transport), so not a massive leap away from whatever Hancock’s position was. Hancock was/is an incompetent, arrogant fool, who seemed to me to put himself (and possibly some friends who now have juicy Government contracts) first.

Can't see that Gove would have really wanted it. Too much which could go wrong and derail his next run for the party leadership.

His domestic arrangements have for whatever reason not attracted the attention of the tabloids. Maybe the preemptive action on his part has had desired effect?

Two people agreeing to get divorced and announcing it shouldn't attract any attention. It's a mature and sensible way to handle a change in their personal circumstances. At least that is what we know at the moment given what has been announced.

Actually seems a bit off for Labour to be asking for clarification on where he has been living for social distancing reasons when they announced they had both been living in the family home.

Maybe Johnson was happy to keep Hancock in place for that reason? That he knew if he quit the balance of hawks and doves, for want of better phrase, would become tipped even further? The story leaking was probably not at Johnson’s behest hut overhand to force his hand. With the accusations of Hancock abusing his ministerial position he would have had to quit eventually.

Also Gove is already one of the key decision makers in terms of Covid so just changing his ministry wouldn’t have much affect.

Two people getting a divorce shouldn't be news, no. But what about two swamp creatures like Gove and Vine?

not sure the way he resigned as chancellor makes him conventional yes man.

Javid a yes man? The same Javid that resigned as Chancellor as he did not want Johnson's principal advisor (Cummings) saying who his advisors should be and escorting his SPAD from No 11? That Javid?

1. A highly responsible private sector security guard at the DHSC's offices in Victoria Street reviews security camera footage.

2. He sees the snog.

3. He contacts the newspapers.

4. He sends them a copy of the footage.

5. He pockets a wodge of cash.

6. The government fails to learn a lesson about the private sector.

Jeremy Hunt, having previously been Health Secretary, would have seemed a more logical choice to hit the ground running.

You could argue, that if he had a principle that No10 and No11 should be separate and distinct, and hence have different advisors, and then subsequently he goes back into a cabinet that still does that, he may not actually hold that principle.

A minimum you could take from it, is he didn’t like being subservient to Cummings.

Does the PM and chancellor still share advisors?

I saw someone claim that it was to gift Labour the Batley and Spen by election so the Tories would have to continue facing Starmer, presumably instead of a political heavyweight like Rebecca Long Bailey or Richard Burgon.

You need to think about who could install a surveillance camera in Hancock's office in the Palace of Westminster and who passed the pictures / footage to the Murdock press, also why sit on the story for several weeks?

Well yes, but not the PM who liked having Hancock to hide behind. As much as Hancock was a wet fart and a skid mark of a man, it’s never fun to see posh bully boys win.

Cummings is surely involved somewhere you'd have to think, no?

As I said on another thread, although it's good such a notorious chancer is gone, it worries me what having someone half-competent in post could mean over the course of this parliament. Then again, it would have been good to have someone half competent throughout this public health crisis but there ya go.

Not sure re: planning. But Hancock’s resignation has somehow justified the appointment of Javid who is one of the most ideologically extreme, neoconservative voices ... to run our most important PUBLIC service.
