Cool - so, owning a pub that won’t even touch the sides of the raise to
minimum wage (obvs all for this but no help provided to pay for it) , the hike in employers NI contribution and the increase in business rates.
So just to warn you prices will go up.

Why should government subsidise companies to provide a fair wage?

I didn’t say they had to.
I just said we’d have to put prices up to cover the increase in minimum wage, on top of
business rates and NI employers contribution, so not to expect a reduction in the price of a pint.

They shouldn't. But if small businesses in hospitality, which still hasn't fully recovered from Covid, are seeing their costs go up with regards to wages, NI, business rates etc, people should not complain when the prices go up.

Smaller local pubs, cafes and restaurants will fall by the wayside and we will be left with chains like Wetherspoons and Costa Coffee.

If people are happy with that then fine. But once they are all that is left they will hike their prices up.

You can't take things in isolation (I appreciate you will as you own a cafe) because the full budget is intended to grow the economy... and a growing economy will mean more people in local pubs, cafes and restaurants, regardless of a penny off the pint.

Saying chains like Wetherspoons and Costa Coffee will be all we're left with is ridiculous doom-mongering.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Get ready for the price of everything to go up massively.

Easy to say more people in local pubs, cafes etc, but with the high numbers in those already closing each year, the budget isn't suddenly going to change people's finances to an extent that they'll suddenly start flowing into smaller cafes and pubs etc. it will help some, but not many, energy bills still going up, travel still costs a fortune.

I can just see more businesses opening up with smaller opening times which again doesn't help the recruitment side of things for those who need a balancing act between working and getting benefits.

In the last round of wage increases, an employer I know had their monthly wages increase by £4000 that per month.

Customers then bemoaned the increase in prices.. no sht.

I neither said "suddenly" nor "flowing".

From initial listen, and without having chance to digest everything, it sounded like a bold budget and one that's going to raise money in lots of areas. They were given a bit of a hospital ball by the Tories but I think they've brought it down and controlled it well. My initial thought is it sounds promising.

Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Certainly true at my place. We pay above NMW but that will have to go up if we're to maintain that ethos. The last increase to minimum wage contributed an on cost of about £5m annually for us that we had no choice but to pass on to the customer.

Not that I disagree with it in principle, as a society we need mechanisms to address the significant wealth inequality in this country and to redistribute it more evenly, but it certainly comes at a cost.
