Ten days until the UK leaves the European Union on 21:30 - Jan 21 by bazgammon
Boo hoo, I suggest you move to an EU country if you love the EU so much. How is it regressive to set your own laws and run your own country rather than be dictated to by a bunch of faceless bureaucrats who can't be voted out?
We can't now, you voted for us to no longer have freedom of movement. You're stuck with us I'm afraid and it's your own fault. Own it.

Gordy, you should try speaking to people, it's good for the mind.
The thing with speaking to people is that you only get a narrow cross section. Polls usually involve thousands of people who have been purpisively sampled to be broadly representative of the entire population. A few guys in the pub doesn't give you that, as interesting as those few guys in the pub might be. I like you, Lucan, but you're a sucker for the classic Tory mindset of thinking that one individual's narrow experience of the world can be extrapolated out to demonstrate broader truths.

Why didn't you move away from the EU if you hated it so much?
You mean faceless bureaucrats like Dominic Cummings? And people who can't be voted out, like Farage who can't be voted out as Brexit Party leader? I bet you can't name any EU laws that you don't like, that British representatives in the EU voted against.

I have been asking every leave enthusiast for 3 years what benefit they are most looking forward to, I used to get the answers in that post but then you actually ask them what that means to their life and they get confused. These days most just choose to ignore the question, it might not possibly destroy the country because a deal might be worked out but it certainly won't bring any benefits and certainly not enough to outweigh the effort and issues caused. Jobs will be lost based on vanity

Let's not forget the unelected Nicky Morgan and Zac Goldsmith both holding roles in government, one of whom had just lost an election and the other didn't even stand. I've not seen much outrage from the gammon on this one.

Not really Herbs, but I'm old enough and ugly enough to realise that polls can be scewed and more importantly people often don't give their honest answer in fear of being looked upon as a freak.
If you ask me direct if I think for example Spain will Spexit if given the opportunity my answer will be that I don't know. If I ask you you will say it will not happen because of a poll.
Good job you're not a betting man Herbs.

Polls are far from perfect, I don't think anyone would argue otherwise. That said I'd be surprised if that particular poll is so far out that actually a majority want to leave the EU. That would take a significant margin of error.

Morning Baz, thanks for the reply and I can assure you that there's no tears involved, just a shrug of the shoulders to our own insular and inward looking future really.
Whilst I've got your ear, Myself, a perpetually hapless and sometimes dishevelled Lucan plus a few others visited Amsterdam back in November last year to enjoy a few libations and Underworld at the Ziggo Arena (and maybe not in that order!! am I right, Baz ;)
Anyhoo, after getting the overnight ferry to Hook of Holland, we found ourselves in Rotterdam train station waiting for the fast train to Amsterdam and a quick look up at the departures board confirmed that the whole of Europe is at your fingertips - Barcelona, Milan, Rome, Madrid, Berlin, Cologne, Paris, Lille, the list goes on and on, Baz.
All destinations easily reachable by a train journey, no borders and the use of the same currency (no need for your travellers cheques here, Baz) plus you can even take your pet along to Sitges beach for the day (Sir Bob's favourite)! Isn't it wonderful?
No Brexit right or wrong here, Baz, just pointing out how excellent our European cousins have made things for each other.
Still, we've got Blackpool and Skeggie to explore with relative ease. What's your holiday plans, Baz?
Please note: prior to hitting the post button, I've double checked for anything that could be construed as "Anti Semitic" and to the best of my knowledge it isn't. Anything deemed to be of a Xenophobic nature is therefore purely accidental or down to your own misconstruing.

What happens in future if you want to do a European train journey involving multiple European countries?
What happens at present to Americans for example?
I don't know by the way, I'm just asking.
I imagine that it's plain sailing as you are already in EU and EU is one and the same - so in effect there are no additional restrictions or passport checks.
I'm not defending the decision to leave, I'm just discussing.

Gordy, you should try speaking to people, it's good for the mind.
Indomitably so.
There is one slight flaw in your argument, though. The problem with polls and polling data is that people don't always say what they really mean, for whatever reason, as we both know.
Your 'talk to the people' theory of understanding the mood of a nation has a lot going for it, except that at it's heart it's actually just another way of conducting a poll. As such it's subject to all the same weaknesses as professionally conducted polls. What was your sample size again?

I've no idea!
I've only visited North America and filled out their pre-visit paperwork but it's an interesting point on border hopping in South America. Would be good to know.

What I'm getting at is that say we dock at The Hook, go to Rotterdam and see all the destinations on offer as you previously mentioned. The fact that we have already landed in Europe means that we can still travel to all the other destinations within the EU with no restrictions. In fact I can't see how anything will change as we already have to queue and show our passports along with everyone else when we alight the vessel.
I repeat that I am not sticking up for our decision to leave but in effect I can't see how anything has changed regarding inter Euro travel - although I stand to be corrected.

I'd guess that is due to Schnegen and the free travel arrangements that it brings.

But I didn't say that I knew for a fact which way people would vote, I offered an opinion. I certainly look at those polls with high scepticism.
For what it's worth I do have regular communication with some German and Italian companies and just as a point of interest The Germans think we are mad and the Italians are split 50/50

I don't think it will or can change??
My point was more about accessibility and ease of travel rather than the eurocrats hindering matters.

It's a project that's been sold to most people around intangible jingoistic ideology. "Take back control", "democracy", "freedom", rebuilding the imperial spirit and "making Britain great again", blah, blah, blah.
Some leavers will have first hand experience of the EU system and may have been failed by it. There are some genuine problems around gangs being shipped in to work in the contracting sector that increases competition, for example. (But then countering that there are also opportunities for Brits to go and work/contract easily in the EU).
But in the majority of cases I suspect most 'leavers' are simply people who've been wound up by the press and the leave camp to be passionate about something they've never directly experienced or been negatively impacted by. And they're probably unaware of many of the boring benefits from alignment and close cooperation. That's certainly the case with my old man - he's never set foot in another EU country and has no direct links at all, but is adamant that it's essential that we leave for no defined reason.
So it's no surprise some leavers can't meaningfully describe what they're looking forward to, other than in those jingoistic terms used to recruit them in the first place.

Meh. Never understood people’s emotional attachment to a trading organisation and don’t understand people’s emotional attachment to leaving it.
We've left the club. A club that traded equally, supported each other, tried to raise the standrads for poorer countries, regions and places, offered European peace and security, shared intelligence, and promoted the place of the European in the world order.
i'd say we got out just in time!

I'm still waiting to see a single benefit explained. Those, like the OP, who are going to celebrate on 31 January only know that he, and the others who voted leave, "won". They haven't a clue what that winning entails. What exactly did he dislike before Farage et all started stirring it? (Note too Farage was an MEP for years before he kicked off)

It's like believing you have won the chance to help a Nigerian prince out of his current financial embarrassment in return for a scarcely believable reward.
