Local connection to the area, knows all about the club, plays decent football

Improved Bristol City year on year, with some big recruitment, but also selling players for big fees, but just couldn't give them that last push

I think he'll be a good manager wherever he ends up next, would be quite happy with him here

Seems a nice bloke from what I've seen of him at press conferences over the years and think he did a decent job at Bristol City. Skusey would get his vice-captaincy back you'd guess as they're very good mates.

Sorry if I've missed it Phil, but has Skuse been stripped of it or handed it to Ward voluntarily?

Simon Grayson.... *shudders*

Paul Cook looks the best option out of those .

Incredibly streaky and I think it would depend on whether he was like Jewell or Mick in terms of how he recruited.

At this level he'd probably be a good fit and get us up, so you'd instinctively think it'd work. I don't see Lambert going until he's had a chance to fail this season though.

Not convinced by Lee Johnson. Didn't see enough progression from his time at Bristol City to get excited about him. Probably better than Lambert, but it's a low bar...

Would take Cook in a heartbeat but it's never going to happen - Because. Marcus. Evans.

Taking away what he bought in fees wise, he spent a very healthy amount on players without ever making the play offs.

I was being a touch facetious. Just going by Ward having worn the armband when the two of them were on the field last week when Chambo wasn't.

The thing is at six months since our last match it would mean Evans accepting - to himself first - that the contract extension was a massive error. I'm not sure if he's ready to do that yet.

Whereas we can all see what happened with Keane in Autumn 2010, Jewell in 2012 and Hurst in 2018 playing out can he?

And also it wouldn't look good for ME that he's had six months to make a decision, and then leaves it to the start of the season.

As Phil and others have said, Cook is not going to be available for long and we need to get him while we can.

Do manager's wages count towards the salary cap? If not, there's even more to tempt Cook to come here.

You know how I feel about you taking such a tone!

I did wonder when Ward got the armband to be fair if there had been another exertion of authority by Lambert.

Perhaps. I had wondered what would have happened with the armband had Keogh been signed, another veteran used to captaining. Wouldn't have surprised me if he'd have been captain.

I think it's clear PL has wanted to bring in more leaders from the business he's done and was looking to do.

Looking at out of work managers, you'd imagine if anything were to happen it would be someone from the following list:

Paul Cook
Danny Cowley
Lee Johnson
Simon Grayson
Nigel Clough

Not a bad list of potential candidates.

Allegedly Evans is the one driving the managers to play 433 and attacking football, so any new appointment will need to be able to do that.

From what I've seen of Cook they mix it up but are comfortable on the ball, Johnson is a bit more pure whilst Cowleys are the other way

....just saying.

Imagine eh?

That seems a fair indication given what he inherited, who has (been) left since and the way the squad is so mishapen. I don't begrudge Lambert for recognising that, his last jobs probably scar him when it comes to unhappy camps full of players welded together from different predecessors, on different sized contracts etc.

I just wish he hadn't been so sh1t thus far.

Phil, any genuine rumblings from inside the club that Lambert is anywhere close to getting fired?

Leaders! I would settle for decent footballers.

Phil, considering the tone of this board towards Lambert this will sound like a daft question - do you think that lambert is actually under pressure in terms of ME potentially sacking him sooner rather than later?

I'm pushing it on all the threads but Tommy Wright ex St Johnstone

Clough, maybe. Feels like L1 is his level.

Cowley harshly sacked by the Terriers would be more direct.

I don't think he's going to be given long if the season doesn't start well.

This time in 6 months we'll all be laughing hartly down the pub (post covid) about when evryone wanted Lambert out. We've already won the league by t his point playing outstanding football. :)

But yes...he's gone .slow start hasnt he.

Phil, do you know what possessed Evans to dish out the new deal to Lambert.... it was like when England gave Sven an extension just before a tournament...then we were crap?..... surely end of the season was time for that.

I'm sure it was aimed at giving stability but we had that undee Mick and where did that get us?

Stability was the idea. When the deal was agreed we were flying high. By the time agreements had been reached on the contracts of the staff and PL put pen to paper - he wanted the other deals sorted first - form had gone downhill.

No.

His Brizzle teams had an alarming tendency to go on 7 or 8 game losing runs for no apparent reason.

And that was with a budget relative to the rest of the division that was pretty large (albeit helped by some big outgoings).... they really should have been getting in the POs a couple of times.

As for the Cowley suggestion on here.... well, I suppose it would be effective and we'd have some kind of identity, so it's an improvement on what we have. But no.

Paul Cook has to be the clear and obvious candidate.

Would very much hope Paul Cook would be the number 1 target if he’s still available. Proven in the division too.

However, Evans is appointing the new man so I expect it’ll be someone equally as useless as Lambert.

Just the thought is enough to send chills down your spine. Who do you think he's talking to? Paul Sturrock? Glenn Roeder? Gary Megson? Darren Eadie?

I reckon he's on the phone to Bruce Rioch as we speak.
