I have to say I find that a bit harsh. It is hard to believe, but not everyone in the squad was terrible last year - and without Downes we'd have been more worried about relegation than scraping the playoffs. IMHO if we sell him to Peterborough, that's dangerous - it isn't so much what we lose, but more what they gain.

It will be the other way round this time next year = sideways step.

No doubt a good year in the championship and he’ll be chased by bigger clubs. Wouldn’t say it was a sideway move personally. You can see why players join Peterborough.

It really isn’t a sideways step. The championship is a step up from L1 and if he has a very good season then maybe a PL club may well come in for him. A lot of ‘ifs’ but it has happened. I imagine most footballers aren’t interested in ‘projects’ as their career are relatively short and live in the here-and-now. They’ve probably are also used to owners etc feeding them a lot of spiel about the bigger picture and not actually delivering.

Agree, it would be viewed as a stepping stone to his next move and Pboro have a good record in helping players move up the leagues

The ridiculous thing though is that he'd be merely adding another stepping stone. We're no less of a stepping stone than Peterborough. I would love him to go into Cook's office this morning and say, I'm all in with Town this season, let me train and play alongside Evans, Harper et al.

But we are not though are we, as we can only offer L1 football next season, posh can offer him Champ football. If he does well next season, then a move into the Prem is quite possible,
Downes a top target for Peterborough on 07:57 - Jun 30 with 4014 views | Chrisd | If he wants to go, then the club should let him go. PC needs players that are willing to fight for the cause and if his heart isn't in it then the time is probably right to allow Downes to move on. I'd be disappointed to see him go as he was one of those that I would've kept, but like Dozzell perhaps a move away would be a good move for all parties at this point in time.

I’d like him to do that too. Nothing at ITFC is going to be the same. New manager, new team mates new structure. An opportunity for him to settle down and really push on. Unless Peterborough pay a lot more, there’s not a huge amount to be gained for him. He’s played in the Championship and people know he can play there. If he wants away, he should be looking at a top end Chamionship club with realistic PL chances.
Downes a top target for Peterborough on 08:03 - Jun 30 with 3964 views | Steve_M | Assuming they are prepared to pay as much as we want that's a big decision for him, a smaller club than he must want but one with a great reputation for improving and selling on players. Barnsley are similar but better established in the Championship at the moment. It feels rather similar to the Webster sale from our perspective though, we would be letting him go now for expediency but the buying club might make a fortune next Summer.

Here's the logic behind my post wkj - if he leaves for Peterborough it proves two things about him: 1. He definitely doesn't want to be here 2. He prefers no pressure football to promotion chasing that we will have here (as I don't think anyone in the world would be surprised if P'boro gets relegated straight back, no disrespect) Based on that, I wouldn't be sorry to see him go as he would prove to me I had him overrated before (as many of us did).

If they are serious and given they have held our feet to the fire when we have signed their players over the years I actually hope we hold out on this one and illicit every drop plus a sell on fee. We played how much for Taylor? 750k for Gwion..... they have fleeced us over the years

I think you're probably right in your Webster link, but like Webster, Downes wants to leave and that leaves us in a tricky spot. I think the club is after £2m for him, so if we can get as close to that as possible (with a generous sell on fee like Webster), that is the best we can hope for.

The stuff he tends to get done, is pocket profits and not invest enough that sees them relegated the season after they are promoted. Downes would be gambling that a one season move in an attacking team, albeit likely to be relegated, is enough to get him his move to a higher level Championship club

Would be surprised if Posh is the best offer he gets. IMO, less annoying to lose than Dozzell, whose ceiling was higher.
