And from the other angle, a player at 32-ish would be getting his last big deal.

Yep, financially a deal that would suit everyone - just make this season much harder for us as a team

Yes I'd be super sad to see Morsy depart. However I think we all need to be emotionally detached as this is the model for the future. We bring players in and sell them for multiples and reinvest. Just like Brighton, ITFC is more important than any player.

If Morsy gets offered a life changing move and the Club benefits from such it will happen. The extra year clause following promotion secures Morsy as an asset, instead of players winding down their last year.

We already have a captain in waiting in terms of Chappers. Correct me but I haven't seen much of Morsy in terms of merchandise front and centre etc.

If Phil says there's legs on this then I wish Morsy well he has been a great influence in diving standards higher throughout the squad. I for one wish him well not matter what.

As for the Downes speculation, I for one would be aiming higher.....

Gutted for us if he did go but not something you can blame him for, its potentially life changing money. With him coming up to 32, regardless of whether he goes or stays another 2 or 3 years, is there a like for like replacement out there who carries the ball and the team as well as he does? He is absolutely crucial to how we play and we saw, with him out the team on the odd occasion last season, how limited we are without him in there breaking lines with his ball carrying.

Ultimately as a club we need to do player trading, if you can get a cracking fee for a 32 year old you have to take it as players of that age don’t have a value

It’d be a massive blow for us to lose him, huge and maybe insurmountable for us as a team for next season for what we want to achieve; but this will be how things have to be at times

What would you consider a cracking fee? Definitely falls into that 'worth more to us than his market value' category.

Although, I think he's replaceable if we have a couple of million quid to do so. He's been fantastic for us, but he's not going to be the best midfielder on the pitch most weeks in the Championship.

If we can get a good fee (i.e. £2-£3m) I imagine that would give us scope to do some really good business ourselves.
Whilst Morsy is integral to the team and style, we signed him as a 30 year old dropping out of the Championship and he was able to fit right in. Id be confident our scouting network has already been identifying medium term targets to replace him anyway, this would be a great chance to top up that fee with an extra £1m and basically accelerate that replacement with an upgrade.
The downside is that the timing isnt great this close to the start of the season, but if they are the right fit it might not take too long to fit in.

Hope this gets thrashed out and dealt with, one way or another, asap.. Of course it would be a set back to lose Morsy. But imo, it would be best to lose him tomorrow, and deal with it whilst the club is in a semi transitional period after being promoted. Than to have a drawn out drama in and around the club and dressing room..
We need a show of commitment from Morsy. Or a fee that allows us to buy an adequate replacement. Which won't be easy.
For the record, he's my favorite player. But these things need to be nipped in the bud, imo. No dramas, just get on with it.

I'd be a bit surprised if this materialised, tbh. Lots of talk about us getting a big fee and SM getting an incredible pay day, but I can't see the rationale from the Saudi end?

You pay a premium to bring in players of a quality/status that you otherwise just can't get to a league like that. But there's plenty of footballers at Morsy's level already playing in North Africa and the Middle East, so why would they pay over the odds for him?

Max Power has just gone over there to play in the second tier for what I’d assume is a bag of money. That doesn’t make a lot of sense either!

I, unfortunately, think there's a decent chance he goes if they're serious.

Best we can do is try to absolutely rinse them on a transfer fee.

I’m sure the club will be on this. It’s a cliche but every player has his price and at his age there won’t be too many opportunities for Morsy to make big money. If he wants to go, good luck to him. He’s been brilliant for us on and off the field.

The key is that as BC says the decision is made quickly so that a replacement is decided on and sourced quickly.

For what it’s worth, I get the feeling Morsy is happy here and will stay. I hope so anyway.

How do Morsy and Taylor compare in terms of style? I’m just wondering how much of a downgrade a Taylor/Luongo partnership would be over Morsy/Luongo?

From the start of the summer several have said that we could be surprised at players that get replaced. I suspect people at the club have this sort of situation covered and a plan b in place. Will be interesting to see how this unfolds. Personally I think our stock is such at the moment that we could be attractive to some decent players should we need to get a replacement. Im not too fussed atm.

It'd be a massive blow to lose him as he's our heartbeat on the pitch and plays a big part in setting standards off it. However, if he can get a big pay day and we can command a big fee to reinvest in a younger version of Morsy then it's hard to see how this doesn't make a lot of sense all round.

I’m struggling to think of a ready made replacement who can walk into the dressing room with the gravitas of Morsy, be our “heartbeat” on the pitch, be surrounded by three defenders and still find the space to pass the ball to Chaplin of Broadhead or put the boot in when necessary.

This is horrendous timing imo.

We actually have a proper scouting network now, thankfully. The off the pitch stuff is harder to replace but there seem to be a lot of good characters at the place and it's not like Morsy is the glue holding together an otherwise rickety ship, not like when Chambo was captain. The players are hugely invested in McKenna, we have (it seems) good ownership and decent infrastructure. Losing him would be a blow, absolutely, but I can see how it makes sense for all parties if we get a hefty offer. Personally I'd rather we and he turn our noses up at the sportswashing slush fund, but can't see that happening.

Anyone who thinks we can do better than a regular Prem squad player approaching their peak years needs to give their head a wobble.

Absolute nonsense! He only played 9 games in Europe for a side who won the UEFA conference league! We shouldn’t be entertaining any European competition winners with fewer than 10 appearances.

The timing isn't great , I'm reminded of losing Murphy to Newcastle, but as we go up the tree and improve player wise we will be cherry picked. Morsy leaving will leave a gap if only because at times last season he drove that team on to win by sheer determination and leading by example.

I'm wondering if we don't recall Idris El at some point and take a look if we don't manage to recruit a suitable replacement.

Wonder if that's some of the reason behind the Aluko deal? Not to replace Morsy on the pitch, but being the voice / raising standards of the older head? Who knows. Difficulty to fathom any other reason for it

The Saudis have the capital to lure who they like. This really is FIFA Ultimate Team for billionaires. Cannot blame the players but we need to protect our assets.

Taylor is a much more forward looking player. Morsy is more of a natural link between the defenders and the midfield.

The confidence we have playing out from the back is dependent on having Morsy as that escape valve. Woolfenden knows if needed he can play the ball into Morsy knowing he will keep it. Not many can knock Morsy off the ball. I'm not seeing that quality in Taylor.

Just stick the armband on Clarke. There is your heartbeat.

Stick luongo in front of the defence and there's your player.

It’s no coincidence that our form turned around once Luongo was a regular. He and Taylor will be fine although I know we are after a third player in there.
