How do people feel about selling the naming rights to Portman Road?

Dearest Edward has been a great sponsor, but I can see us signing up for a new bigger, longer term deal next year. I'm going for the Mediterranean Shipping Company Arena.

Cobbold stand is rebuilt over the top of Portman Road in 2027 and what is left is eventually renamed Mick Mills Way in 2049 to celebrate his 100th birthday.

I said a while ago on here that I do wonder whether the intangible value the club get from
Ed being sponsor is worth more than any additional revenue from a new sponsor.

I don’t think we’d sell 50k kits with MSC or Magnus on the front for example.

To get the kind of brand exposure and association we have with Ed would literally cost 10s of millions. Worth keeping him as sponsor even if it’s for below the market rate.

Doesn't the wee ginger cherub have a reduced shelf life though? Not sure he'll have quite the reach in a couple of years time when the touring stops and he needs to take time away.

Or is he the new Elton and has National Treasure potential?

Would rather not, but appreciate we will be an easy target When we get to the Premier League.
It may be aligned with Rhode Island FC/Phoenix Rising sponsorship.

However, i’m with you on the new stand…a single tier, deep raked stand built over Portman road (the road) making it into a tunnel/pedestrian area.

Perhaps they'll rename it The Rhode Island Red Bowl but i'm not counting my chickens.

"A disgrace" on 11:46 - Jul 27 by Dyland

Not really.

Child poverty is a disgrace, e.g.

Renaming sports stadiums is one of the more tedious symptoms of capitalism and our obsession with profit, tis all.

See also, "an issue". Again, child poverty is an issue, for example. Renaming sports stands is neither an issue nor a disgrace.

Thanks for reading :)

If they rename the ground, it will always be Portman Road to me.

I still use the names Pioneer, Cobbold, North Stand and Churchamans.

Presumably the Pioneer stand is named after Cyril Pioneer, the great Ipswich Town inside forward from the 1930s?

Or is it the Japanese multinational corporation?

If the latter, it's worth reflecting on whether this is a debate about whether it's evil to sell the club's soul, or whether it's just that some of us don't really like change that much :) (me included...)

It would have been the TXU Energi Arena or similar 20 years ago if they hadn't have gone bust.

With an ITV Digital Stand as well?

they should have called it the NerdyKnowAll Stadium during the Marcus Evans era. A place of doom and gloom and little hope.

Good on ya Glassers. My head wont get past North, South East and West. I do just about get to Churchmans & Pioneer sometimes, but I can't hand on heart tell you which is which of the stands with the new fangled names are either end of the ground! (Sorry Sirs Bobby and Alf!)

some of our younger posters may not get that reference so just to help them here's the Urban Dictionary Definition

NerdyKnowAll
A proper irritating c***. Someone who thinks they they are clever/funny/charming but are actually very sad people with no friends and usually posesses a small penis. Hence, the need to mask this by being totally obnoxious.
That guy he's talking sh**. He's a real NerdyKnowAll.

Why's he slagging off Burley? He must be a NerdyKnowAll.

Wouldn't care less. Everyone would still call it Portman Road, take the cash! Newcastle is the perfect example, apart from on Soccer Saturday everyone still called it St. James's rather than Sports Direct Arena or whatever it was.

Surely "Portman Road" is simply..... on 11:50 - Jul 27 by Bloots

....the name of the road that the Ipswich Town Football Club stadium is on?

The stadium itself doesn't actually have a name, it's just known as "Portman Road".

So it isn't really as case of it being "renamed", merely "named".

I'd suggest it would continue to be known as Portman Road and any sponsor name would really only be superficial marketing.

I'm surprised it hasn't already happened to be honest, and I don't really think it's worth anyone getting their knickers in a twist about.

"This is the modern world that I've learnt about"

Yeah it's like Upton Park. Don't think Ive ever heard anyone call it the Boleyn Ground but it's near Upton Park station so that's good enough
