Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace future: What we’re hearing 12:43 - Dec 8 with 8423 views | itfcjoe | https://theathletic.com/5118829/2023/12/08/roy-hodgson-crystal-palace-manager-fu Who could be in line to replace him? Former Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui is one possibility. The Spaniard has been at Selhurst Park several times this season to watch matches, although it is not the only ground he has attended as he seeks a Premier League return. Other clubs, potentially Nottingham Forest should they sack Steve Cooper, could also be interested in Lopetegui. Cooper himself has long been admired at Palace for his achievements first in winning the Under-17 World Cup with England in 2017 and then in taking Swansea City to the Championship play-offs twice in as many seasons (making the final once) before winning them with Forest eight months after being appointed with them bottom of the second tier. His body of work with young players is another significant attraction. He was under consideration until very late in the process when Palace decided to hire Vieira in the summer of 2021 and is particularly liked by their sporting director Dougie Freedman. Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna is another whose work has not gone unnoticed by the Palace hierarchy. His side are second in the Championship after being promoted last season, but Palace would have to pay compensation for him, something they have been reluctant to do previously. McKenna, 37, also has limited managerial experience and none in the Premier League, which would possibly count against him, given the history of Parish’s appointments. McCarthy could be a consideration, but he has no experience of management at a senior level aside from that one match last season, which would not be in his favour.

Probably in every metric other than income - and even then we are only 27 decent results away from overtaking them…

Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace future: What we’re hearing on 13:47 - Dec 8 by _clive_baker_ | I would agree tbh, right now certainly. Loads of good young players coming through as well and someone with academy experience would probably be a good choice for them. On a side note I've never really understood why manager compensation is such a put off. Premier League clubs are happy to drop 10's of millions on promising young players, many of whom won't work out, but seemingly not prepared to pay a few million for a manager. |
Back in the mists of time when those were the days, Chairman Sir John Cobbold said in relation to Bobby Robsons salary that no player should be paid more than the manager. How times have changed.

Based on club size they shouldn't be though, and have been punching above their weight.

If that's all you're boiling it down to they're also a bigger club than Leeds, Forest, Derby and Sheffield Wednesday as are Brighton, Brentford and Bournemouth.

Lots of ways of defining this one. I would go for average home attendance over the last 20 years. On that basis, we're on a par with Norwich, Coventry, Southampton, Bolton, Stoke, Derby & Sheffield United, which feels about right. Palace are a little below. Bournemouth are absolutely NOT a "big club" & never will be, but the definition is entirely subjective.

Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace future: What we’re hearing on 13:43 - Dec 8 by Radlett_blue | Town last won anything meaningful in 1981. That's 42 years ago. When I was a teenager, I certainly didn't regard Wolves or Portsmouth as "big clubs" on the basis they had won the Football League 30 years previously. |
I suppose everyone sees things differently but watching Ipswich in the 70's I always thought of Wolves & Portsmouth as pretty Big clubs with good traditions and past glory days.

Yes but only recently, by OP's metric Palace are a bigger club for hanging around a bit.

That. For all that he instantly improved us mid-season, he's definitely more a 'project' style manager rather than a 'save your season' guy for me.

Thankfully, it looks like we are on our way back and closing the gap but the reality is the likes of Palace, Brighton, Brentford have been light years ahead of us for years. I know as Town fans we love our history (rightfully so) but it's fairly irrelevant when it comes to the reality of signing/retaining players and managers - it is about the here and now.

I don't think you judge the size of a club purely on the team on the pitch's performance. I would suggest there is plenty to suggest Palace and Town are similar size clubs but they are about as high as you would expect them to get whilst Town are on the rise.

Is actually the correct answer even without blue goggles on. They've neither won the top league nor a domestic or European cup. They've fewer 2nd and 3rd tier titles and they have a smaller ground and lower attendances. The only (albeit very important) area where they beat us is in recent time in the top flight since c. mid2010s and the money that attracts. But again, they've spent far less time in the top tier than we have overall. Having said all that, they've done remarkably well to stay in the PL for something like 9-10 seasons now. That's not easy; many smaller clubs struggle to get past a run of 5 or 6 seasons (or 1 if you're Naarwich).

That's incorrect actually. £4m is a huge amount in relative terms re. managerial compensation. I guess the issue re. multi-million compensation deals for managers is that they can't recoup that by selling on their asset, unlike a player. So, if Palace wanted him, they'd need to pay £4m + £2m a year on a four-year deal, for argument's sake. That's £12m guaranteed outlay with no return whatsoever.
Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace future: What we’re hearing on 18:24 - Dec 8 with 1679 views | MK1 | A move to Palace would maybe tempt McKenna if we don't go up this season, but at the moment, no. Think he would need to manage a mid table Premier League club before Man Utd would take him. Lopetegui is in line for the United job when Ten Hag gets the boot.

He really is overrated, it would be irresponsible and reckless for any club to consider taking a punt on him. It’s best we keep him for another 5 or so seasons to be fair. 😉
