Best player you've played with / against? 14:09 - Oct 3 with 9524 views | giant_stow | My mate in the over 35s played against Paul Konchesky the other day. Apparently, he had the star struck ref in his pocket. (cool story bro) Personally, its some Ex-Charlton bod whose name escapes me (in an over 45s game). Beat that!

He was very fair actually. He could have gone right through me but just breezed right past me instead. I wasn't really expected to get in his way. I started the day as a substitute for an U15 match, got roped into being a linesman for the 1st XV match and then came on as sub with 15 minutes to play. My biggest fear was being given the ball but fortunately, Woolverstone were so dominant that it only happened once and I think I might have dropped it. [Post edited 3 Oct 2024 16:04]

Best player you've played with / against? on 16:12 - Oct 3 with 2113 views | suffolkpoker | I played agaisnt John Wark a few times playing Sunday football. He was striker and scored buckets and buckets of goals. Also on a more random story. I went back packing in Australia and was on the piss in Newcastle (NSW) and our hostel got a phone call from the Newcastle FC saying a team had pulled out of tomorrows footall tournament can fill in. We made a team of the lads who were on the piss. Turned out to be a half decent side and we lost in the final of a supporters tournament. I played all match agaisnt Ian Crook, who at the time was the manager of Newcastle Jets. He was another level above anyone there and despite age differnces gave me a master class in centre midfield. I did maange to nut meg him to my delight. Afterwards the club laid on a huge BBQ with free beers and I had my town top on and Ian Crook made a beline for me. We had a good chat and he even mentioned how pleased i looked with the nut meg lol. Actually a decent bloke and i even have a softspot for the Jets for there hospitality off the day. Theose were really were the care free days.

Best player you've played with / against? on 15:16 - Oct 3 by Coastalblue | Similar tale, though I started. Jason leonard and I was in the opposing front row, the first time I realised the skill involved in playing there beyond being able to shove hard. |
That must have been brutal. I played as a fly half usually because I was quick with my hands and a good kicker but not a very fast runner and not particularly strong. For a while I played with a dental appliance that was fixed in my mouth, but it was reasonably safe to play with me being a back in schoolboy rugby. Again as a sub, I was once roped in to play as hooker in a match. I'd never played in the pack before, and never again. Never felt so vulnerable and abused in my life - my shorts felt like they were being torn off between my legs and from behind, my ears took an absolute beating and my head got squeezed so tight that the appliance in my mouth broke and I had a mouth full of shattered resin and gnarled wire to spit out. Front row are animals.

He was playing 30 of us simultaneously, but there you go, a win is still a win. He was the best I've ever played against. It's all been downhill since then, I peaked too early. You're right, the stories are great to read! I think the Ian Crook one's my favorite as I used to idolise him (my London school mates thought I was nuts). does John Walk still play round Ipswich way or has he packed it in?

Don't know, I live/work in Coventry (never actually lived in Suffolk) Was just about to post one last thing, not footie, but driving home from a Sunday league game (Moira Utd, nr Ashby de la Zouch) saw huge bloke on a pushbike When I looked in mirror, it was Frank Bruno I tooted/waved (but didn't stop) & saw him wave back!

Darren Bent and a few of that alumni that I don’t remember during a few failed trails over 2 summers. Played a charity game in Felixstowe against some of the legends. Those that stand out in my memory are John Wark (his son was Gk for one of my youth teams) and Paul Mariner but know there were others that I didn’t appreciate at the time Latterly: Vets football team I played for in Wiltshire prior to ‘career’ ending injury saw me play with 2 ex Trinidad and Tobago internationals. One, Brent Sancho, was the defender that Peter Crouch pulled his hair when scoring for England. Stern John popped into train with us a couple of times as well. Edit: also joined a 5 aside team in Leicester in early 2000’s with people from a pub I worked in. Turned up for 1st game and Mark Morrison (as in Return of the Mack) was out GK [Post edited 3 Oct 2024 18:23]

Best player you've played with / against? on 19:12 - Oct 3 with 1873 views | stjohnsblue | During the Easter holidays (I think) in 1998, my dad thought it would be a great idea to take me and 2 mates (who were slight lunatics)….plus my brother who was about to start his a level exams away for 5 days to Butlins in Bognor Regis. It was absolute carnage for him trying to control 4 16-18yr olds. The highlight of the week was the 5 aside tournament. We were tearing up the pitch mon-wed but by the time Thursday came around and the tournament started proper we were an absolute mess. We somehow got to the semis where we met a team who had someone fully dressed in a Crystal Palace kit with 17 & Morrison on their back, and even 17 on his socks. Clinton, aged about 17/18 and his mates ripped us to shreds winning by at least 8 clear goals. We hung our heads in shame and a couple of years later realised who we had actually played against. - nice to remember that holiday as sadly one of my buddies died October 23 - he was a great player, if not a bit of a loon. Oh and needless to say my brother got D D E for his A levels so the break from revision really worked for him 😂

He got so much under my skin that I feigned injury one day because I didn't want to play against him. Well......you didn't have to say he was famous. Ade Mafe was at my school (albeit a couple of years younger) and used to beat anyone on a 100m (including the parents at sports say) [Post edited 3 Oct 2024 21:17]

I played in the same team as Matt Bloomfield in primary school, I was too sh1te to play for Trimley Red Devils but somehow ended up getting in the school team in years 5 and 6. Matt was so far ahead of the rest of us (and equally could have made it as a cricketer too I reckon}

I played for TRD for many years (with a few years defected to Kirton Kestrels Under the infamous Pete S). He was/is a good lad and you’re right he could have gone down the cricket route as I played/trained with him at cricket as well (and his bro who was frustratingly good at all sports as well). I was the partner of one of his fam members for a few years and he is just a top guy. I’m very happy for him that he’s made a career by working hard and just being a genuinely good bloke. Think he could have/might make it in the media as well in the long run. Not spoken directly for a long time but think/hope he could have a very good coaching/managerial career and think he’ll at least make a champ team at some point.

I coached Matt Bloomfield (and his older brother) when he was a youth at Trimley Red Devils. Obviously I take all credit for his success in the industry. Edit: I was doing my UEFA Prelim badge with Peter Trevivian (legend) at the time. [Post edited 4 Oct 2024 0:31]

Best player you've played with / against? on 01:45 - Oct 4 with 1464 views | IPS_wich | I was 15 and it was the last game of the season for the U-15s in the Boys Brigade team I played for. We were told that this 11 year old kid from the 'Anchor Boys' team was going to make up the numbers for the last game. It's the equivalent of the U-15 Scouts team being told one of the Cubs is playing, or a Primary school kid playing in the Year 10 high school team. We weren't happy but we were told he was really good and was being scouted by Ipswich and several clubs. Up rocks this tiny kid (tiny even by 11 year old standards) who proceeds to be one of the best players on the pitch. The opposition were getting really riled up and starting to try and rough him up, but he would just spin or weave to avoid the tackle and run off laughing with the ball. We thought it was great but all agreed he'd be too small to become a pro player when he was older. That kid was Kieron Dyer - he never did grow to be very big, but in hindsight it was obvious he was going to be a pro - the ball was stuck to his foot like velcro and playing against boys twice as big didn't phase him. I left Boys Brigade a month or two later so didn't see him play again, but my younger brother was only a couple of years older than Kieron and by the time Kieron was 13/14 and playing in the U-15 team the manager was often substituting him off at half time to give the other team a chance (I think he scored close to 100 goals in a season from midfield).

He beat me 4-0 in a 5 minute game, and was brilliant. He basically put all his players upfront, which I didn’t think was particularly realistic. I did get a photo in the Star as the best of the rest.
