What is the point in working hard all your life to obtain a decent standard of living.
All I wanted to do was work hard so we can make sure the kids are ok and the Labour goverment decide now even pensions are include in inheritance tax.
So everything I have worked hard for the government will take 40% of it back when I die when I have already paid tax on it
If the NHS is in such a bad state why didnt they put a penny or 2 on income tax and state this money is specifically for that purpose. They didn’t do it because they don’t want any Labour voters being affected by their Budget.
Everyone wants a decent NHS as we will all end up using it
Basically Labour demand all the people that don’t vote for them carry the majority of the Burden of the Country
This budget will destroy any growth for the Country even the OBR have down rated Labour growth predictions.
They have hit Employers hard which will mean eventually employees suffer which mean people will stop spending money and any growth will be impossible

What's the difference between someone thinking a person is all ME, Me, Me and one thinking someone else shouldn't have money ? I remember an episode of Heartbeat where David said to Greengrass "What's a Communist ?" Greengrass's reply was " Someone who's got nothing a want's you to have the same" Sadly life's not fair. People die young. Good people have bad luck and bad people have good luck. Again sadly many countries seem on the face of it to have either one end of the scale regarding wealth and all that life can provide for them whilst many live in poverty. Sometimes life is what you make it. You can't determine everything that happens along the way. But you can make an effort to have a good life. On the other hand you have many who simply aren't interested in hard work or an effort to better themselves. That's their choice as long as they don't expect to have what the person who's made the effort has. I do feel that's where the system breaks down. Because all rich and all poor are treated as being the same. But some rich have worked their way to wealth, some haven't. Some poor cannot help it, others you could give them a million pounds and within 5-10 years they'd be poor again. We need a Government that's not biased one way or the other. Sadly we don't have any that fits that criteria.
You’re Kemi Badenoch and I claim £5

Inheritance tax is such an outdated policy in my opinion.
The OP quite rightly states frustration with the system as let be honest it's not fair. People get taxed at a high level throughout their life and at the end of it you get taxed again should you pass the threshold, which no matter what people says isn't that high when you consider the average house price these days.
It’s your fault for voting Tory. They’ve destroyed everything and made you believe you deserve a slice of the pie they’ve scoffed.
They hate people like you and exploit and manipulate you all your life, whilst mugging you off. This the bill for that, and we are all splitting it with you.
The idea it will harm you is because those elites are telling you that you’re one of them and you’re still swallowing it.

I'm sure that wealth is going to trickle down, any day now.
Nothing in this country will change till the banks cough up the dough we lent them in 2007 and the massive global companies like Amazon start paying workers and taxes the way every other business has to.
The inheritance tax doesn't kick in until £325,000. If you're leaving that much to your kids it's probably fair that some of it is contributed to the running of the country, if we want things fixed and working for all.
But then as a Tory I guess you only care about yourself and your family.
I’m very sympathetic with the idea of taxing the rich more. But there is an argument to be made that many people will already have paid tax, (possibly 40%) on that money already. So when it’s taxed again they lose another big old lump. I’m not sure that’s entirely fair either.
Oh, and what’s this still doing doing, 4 pages in, in the football section? I set my filter so I only see Dottie posts - I really don’t want to see this stuff.

Come on Phil, get it moved.
don't open the thread.
And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Since they paid the tax they have died though. So are they really paying the tax twice?
I don't see why people inheriting over £1M shouldn't have some tax pay on it (and even then most don't due to the ability to set up funds to avoid paying it).
There are possibly some issues with things like passing on a family business that involves a lot of land and buildings (e.g. farming), though.

The OP stated he's working hard for others ie: his family and children and your sanctimonious post is about selfishness. Ironic, right? It's not what's in it for him; he's clearly stated its about what's in it for his immediate others.
Perhaps your post is more reflective of this country, at least, this forum for sure.
Family/him in this context means the same thing. Your tribe... as opposed to the tribe that is the whole country.
Trust the process. Trust Phil.

Have a decent one so I'd say I probably do
Rubbish! Clearly you do not.
A pension is a vehicle in which you can shelter money without it being taxed until it is drawn down as a pension. It then gets taxed on drawdown (Pension funds get taxed on the way out (less the 25% lump sum)
The other main savings vehicle is an ISA in which you can save money that has been taxed but which as a consequence you can subsequently draw down tax free. (iSA funds get taxed on the way in)

Come on £325k is a considerable and life changing sum, seems perfectly fair to pay tax on sums bigger than that
We need growth rates to increase if Labour’s current plans are to achieve their objective. Over the next five years growth is not expected to be any higher than previously predicted.
The budget doesn’t look as if it will achieve the objectives set but it too early to be certain.
Another stick go hit boomers with. Received a mail shot today from Aviva pushing equity release. They boast about having loaned over £11B, money . Neither the £11B, nor the compound interest charged building up will be available for the next generation to inherit,
I’m 78 and have no intention of using an Equity release scheme.

If your estate has to pay inheritance tax. you've managed it badly.
Also, you're dead, so why worry about it?
Could be Buddhist.

Labour aren't Labour anymore. They're a softer version of the Tories and this comes from a lifelong Labour voter. I'm willing to hold fire with my criticism until they've served a full term but I'm not holding my breath.

Don’t put your savings in pensions then. Take it out, stick it in a bond and gift it to your kids. You’ve then ‘just’ got to survive another 7 years (unless they’ve just changed that, but other tax efficient options are available). You’ll probably want that pension yourself though, so seek financial advice about what works for you.
If you were serious about what you claim you want to do, you should know there are ways to minimise IHT liabilities. If not, you really do need to read up or talk to a IFA.
Indeed, redistribute the wealth now and be alive to enjoy the positive impact it has on his family. He's also "bought (sic) his family up to work hard and not rely on anyone else for financial support", so they will doubtless be blown away by the financial gifts left to them should he opt to hoard his wealth until death, even moreso given together these gifts exceed the threshold at which a portion is subject to 40% IHT.
