Check out the Rooney Rule in the NFL. It doesn't discriminate against any colour, but it does mean that candidates from non-white backgrounds must be given a chance to interview for positions.

If, after doing a fair evaluation of the candidates, it turns out that the best candidate is white, then so be it. It's all about giving these candidates a chance.

I don't like Rupert Lowe.

But I think his error here (if he's made one) is to take the words he's posted from the advert at face value rather than making the assumption that you make. If advert is unlawful (and I haven't seen the whole thing, so I have no idea), then Lowe surely has a fair point. If it's not unlawful, then it could certainly be a lot clearer.

People of colour clearly need to be given a fair (and that means fairer than at present) opportunity in football coaching, management and administration. Myself, I do not see the existence of particular jobs that are /only/ open to such candidates as being the answer.

Personally I favour the 'Rooney rule' (and no, I don't /just/ mean "never employ Wayne Rooney as a coach", although that too is a sound proposition).

I think this scheme can sit alongside the Rooney Rule and make it more meaningful. Rooney says you have to have one non-white applicant on the shortlist. But, if people of colour are not even getting the opportunity to start their coaching career, that Rooney Rule candidate is likely to get rejected because of lack of experience. If this scheme removes such barriers then I’m all for it.

I agree with him. There should be equal opportunity and the best candidate selected regardless of which group identity they belong to. I would have thought it is illegal to advertise like this?

Shame. I rather liked him in Dad's Army and Parsley Sidings, but then he is a massively pompous and outdated tit.

I love the story about Joan Collins having to deny she was dating Arthur Lowe and was in fact seeing American movie magnate Arthur Loew.

I don't agree with this being done, one of the reasons being because it fuels the racists.

However, I understand why it's being done. That it is aiming at levelling up for groups of people underrepresented in coaching due to them historically having been deprived those opportunities directly and indirectly. And I applaud the club for trying to achieve to that.

Like I said though, I'm not convinced this is the right way to go about it.

Can fully appreciate that - think I'm going to enjoy the early years when they can't back chat. I've got nieces and nephews who are nearly into double figures and I'm sure I was, but I never remember being that argumentative at that age!

Is it woke DEI nonsense to mention you made reference to men but neglected to mention women were included in the offer?

Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness.

A few people will probably get upset about this but it’s a PL initiative designed to help people who are underrepresented in football.

https://www.premierleague.com/news/2200292

It’s funded by the PL and has been backed by Governments (both Labour and Tory). The underlying aim is ‘that after their placements, CIDS coaches will achieve sustainable coaching positions, where they can be successful and visible role models and will inspire the next generation of coaches from a diverse background’.

It has nothing to do with university or higher education. It’s about role models and inspiration - the fact that football coaches are predominantly white (like the country) highlights that white working class kids can already aspire to be like their coaches if they wish to.

Nothing to get angry about.

Oh some people will always want to get angry about stuff like this. Dunno why

By all means put processes in place, mentoring schemes, extra support to casual staff in academy but to make a job only available to certain people is just wrong.

As a club, we are already over represented in comparison to the county we are based in race-wise. 6.5% of Suffolk's population is non-white - there are at least 3 first team coaches [Lee Grant, Sone Aluko, Ivan Mukandi] who are non-white.

I couldn't give exact numbers, but having been around academy games and the like this isn't an area we are under represented in - I imagine it's a centralised PL initiative [maybe they pay for it too?] but it doesn't sit right in a county with not huge prospects for young people where 94% of the males aren't eligible for a job

If you want a young ethnic minority coach in a junior role to thrive it's a lot more likely that that will happen in a setting where there are other coaching staff from ethnic minorities. It might be precisely why Town's bid proposal for the funding for this role was successful.

Re Lowe's tweet:
Imagine being so desperate to build your profile that you are willing to sow division in society and fuel resentment against a young person being given a supportive one year training post, and implying that you are being discriminated against, even though Lowe himself is a wealthy man who has lived a privileged life.

Instead of seeing a scheme like this as being the source of all that is wrong in Britain, maybe we should look at Independent Boarding Schools like Radley College, which turn out entitled, privileged, divisive wannabe populists like Lowe.

Oh for a return to the days when women didn't play football, there were virtually no black players and those that there were got racial abuse.

The thing is that Reform share the same sort of disdain for DEI as Trump, and look where that has ended up with clearly hopeless white men (such as RFK, Hesgeth) doing immeasurable damage.

And you don't get much more white privilege than Lowe (Radley), Tice (Uppingham) and Farage (Dulwich College).

As with Trump and his multi-millionaire backers, they're having a laugh.
