Do negotiations always take as long as they seem to have done this year, or is it just a recency bias?

As we progress they will take longer, especially with international signings. Much bigger numbers than were used to so plenty of due diligence.

Certainly feels that way but probably also that supporters get an hour by hour update on progress now, rather than finding out when the deal was 80% done. Also very important to negotiate hard on both ends, couldn't really believe my eyes that Ashton was criticised by some for 'messing around for just £2.5m' on Omari. Its a lot of dough to us innit.

They're in the driving seat for theirs, we're not. Basically. We're waiting for them to exhaust all the possibility of better offers.

Almost by default if we're in for a player, either they or their agent will think, 'if they want me, maybe a prem club will too.'

If their agent plays the long game they should push them our way and get another deal out of it in 2 years time when we flog him.

£2.5m was more than we spent on anyone for years. Tis true we needed the extra for Omari.

We've truly adapted to that £10m unit price haven't we.

Nathan Broadhead at £7.5m + £2.5m is hidden away under Omari and Delap but is a lovely chunk of cash.

Certainly is, especially by way of profit. Probably 50% of what we made on Omari despite the fee being 25%.

Cash in the bank wont win us points though, hopefully we can spend (some of) it well.

Do you think it's more likely that:

(a) There is something unique in the whole footballing world about ITFC which means that we and we alone take longer to do deals than every other club.

Or

(b) That you (and all of us) follow our transfer dealings WAY more closely than we follow what's going on at other clubs, which means we see and analyse the deal from rumour to completion, whereas with other transfers we just see them being agreed.

Think it's maybe a bit of both.

Our bargaining position has changed a lot over the past 4-5 windows - sometimes stronger, sometimes weaker, etc as we've been promoted/relegated and that must need adapting to at times (and maybe indicates we need to bring in someone additional to help on that side of things).

There's definitely an element of b though and you only need to drop into other clubs forums for a bit to see that this happens in most places.

And also a point to this….

Perhaps if we do take longer then it’s because Ashton is a tough negotiator. That’s not a bad thing at all!

I feel like our biggest 'issue' this summer has been that we are trying to recruit like a PL club without actually being one. Logic dictates that for a lot of our targets we are not going to be their first choice move and/or their clubs are not going to sanction them leaving until they have replacements. I feel like there will be a lot of movement next week and chips will begin to fall once the PL clubs all get their houses in order.

Tough negotiators get what they want for a price that is fair

Bad negotiators don’t get what they want

It’s a fine line and he has 10 days to fall on the right side of it

I’m not saying you’re wrong:

Wasn’t really intending to come across as an Ashton fan boy.

Just it’s easy to close deals quickly if you make a lot of concessions. A bit of patience can work.

someone made a comment which maybe is true in that we are trying to target physical players that are capable of stepping up to the PL. Maybe that criteria is not helping us as those players are already catching the eye of PL clubs and like hackney don't want to come here. Which drags it all out and maybe means we don't get who we want. The guy from Mexico as well springs to mind here plus the lad last week from Spain.

We don't know of course. Only Ashton and McKenna really know what's going on.
