| More trouble in Hampshire 07:52 - Sep 23 with 5635 views | StokieBlue | Protests at Gosport along with "Danny Tommo" out in the channel slashing a dingy with a knife that had a rescue worker onboard. https://www.theguardian.com/wo Rather worryingly there were ~100,000 people watching a live-stream of him doing it. At the protests on land, emergency workers were assaulted: "Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said it was conducting inquiries into the boat-slashing incident. It said officers had made six arrests for offences including assaulting an emergency worker and aggravated trespass. All six people were in custody on Tuesday night." Also good to see the false narrative about asylum seekers getting given everything they could ever want is still going strong: "Gosport local Dave Palmer, 43, was among the protesters. “We don’t want them in the country at all. They get given everything. I work 70 to 80-hour weeks as an air-conditioning engineer. What does the government give me? Nothing,” he said." False information like this that is perpetually circulated within echo chambers needs to be tackled as well as the actual actions at protests. That is of course easier said than done though. SB | |

You mention Tommy Robinson and that other bloke and all their mob that are all wife beaters etc., but don't mention that there will also he part of the migration 'mob' that also commit crimes. |
Altho, so far as the statistics exist, asylum seekers appear to commit crime at no greater rate than the general populace (other than the basic fact of having arrived illegally, if they came by boat or lorry). The same cannot be said for the protest movement and its leaders (how many of the post-Southport rioters had previous records?).

Then they all turned into NIMBYs. [Post edited 23 Sep 11:55]

Tho I suspect nimbyism (dislike of expected disruption, extra traffic, protests, etc.) has more to do with the village's upset than fear of immigration or immigrants. They're just comfortable Middle Englanders who don't want a hornet's nest on their doorstep. People got just as vehement about HS2, but that doesn't mean they were opposed to all railways. I’d like the countryside more I hate all that crap tbh. Maybe pop in for a Friday lunch time session that kind of thing. [Post edited 23 Sep 12:00]

Uppie for the crime stats, but the usual reminder that it is not illegal for asylum seekers to come to the country by any means. I suspect this thread is done and will just spiral into the usual mess these sorts of threads always end up in.

A knife on a boat would be easy to get off with. But he's bang to right with endangering life.

Coming to the UK as an asylum seeker is legal. Attempting to deliberately evade border controls, however, is not. So if the boat people get most of the way across and call for help, or land and immediately turn themselves in, that is ok. Arriving concealed in a lorry, then running away when it stops is not.

You’re correct it does. That’s what happens when human beings are treated like human beings, and not treated as foreigners that must assimilate. People from one country are allowed to live in another country, and can maintain their culture. Would be a bit hypocritical really if someone were to think differently if say, they wanted something different for a specific country or culture. [Post edited 23 Sep 20:44]

Agreed. An important distinction when most of those calling them illegal include both categories.

| More trouble in Hampshire on 09:09 - Sep 23 by nrb1985 | Out of curiosity - logistically, who has jurisdiction here? Is the channel half ours half there’s so it depends what side it occurred as to who can take him task? That sounds like a stupid question I realise. |
Not a stupid question at all. The Channel is mostly narrow enough that the British and French territorial waters overlap, with no International Waters at all. Where they overlap the two countries have an agreed boundary by Treaty. Hampshire has the Isle of Wight off it, so the boundary for British Territorial Waters extends out from the furthest point of coastline plus 12 miles. In International Waters beyond the 12 miles any British protestors in a British boat on a journey which originated in a British Port and ended in a British Port would unambiguously fall under British jurisdiction, and would be tried under relevant British Law.

| More trouble in Hampshire on 09:32 - Sep 23 by Luk38644 | I'd be interested to know if anyone on here is even slightly concerned about the illegal immigration aspect of the channel crossings? It's OK to bash the protestors but surely you can see that alot of people are genuinely concerned about what's going on? Surely even the most liberal poster on here can accept that it's not sustainable and potentially dangerous considering we know literally nothing about the people coming on these boats, and even when they get here, alot of asylum claims are being mismanaged (as per Home Office whistleblower)? |
I don’t share your concerns about illegal immigration, because I believe the entire debate around small boats is being artificially amplified to distract us from the far greater threats facing our country. The focus on Channel crossings is a classic distraction tactic used by the billionaire classes and certain media outlets to turn people against those less fortunate than themselves. By keeping everyone outraged about a tiny fraction of overall migration, it draws attention away from the real, structural failures affecting our daily lives like the rise of far right extremism, the degradation of our education system and the existential threat of climate change. The real danger isn't the people on the boats, it's the criminal gangs exploiting them and the social media algorithms exploiting people's anxieties for profit My perspective comes from real world experience, not online rhetoric. I am the son of an immigrant, my wife is an immigrant and my boss is someone who was granted asylum. Many of my coworkers, friends and neighbours are immigrants or the children of immigrants. They are incredibly good, hard working people who contribute vastly more to this country than those far right protestors we see rioting or causing disruption. Not to say that my view isn't a passive 'anything goes' liberalism. True integration is a strict two way street. My wife made a massive effort to learn the laws, respect the norms and integrate into the community while retaining her own sense of national identity. I have absolutely zero tolerance for any migrant who brings deep seated, illiberal intolerance with them or rejects fundamental values like gender equality and mutual respect. If someone is intolerant to that level, they shouldn’t be welcome here. The difference is, I want the system to rigorously filter out actual ideological extremism and crush the smuggling networks, rather than using a broken administrative system to whip up blanket fear against everyone trying to come here. Edit: also, there is no world in which the behaviour of these goons can be reckoned with or excused. [Post edited 23 Sep 16:50]

Might not impact their village but I’m sure as hell it impacts wider towns around when they all get bussed in on the daily in their nice tracksuits and iPhones in hand.

I'll take this at face value. Honestly, it doesn't bother me in the slightest. If someone is desperate enough to make that kind of journey, who the heck am I to judge them and call to send them back? It's totally outside my life experience and I think (having visited quite a lot of the world) that they must feel they are in dire need. I really don't begrudge anyone landing here a roof and meal and some due process, especially given the UK's record in destabilising large parts of the global south. The numbers are still very small compared to our population and (ugh) GDP.
